Ok, so I learned a new term. But what exactly is wrong with avoiding pvp? People pay for the service, not to mention the amount of real world time it takes to make isk in this game. If someone doesn't want to engage another player it's their right. I'm thinking that people who do a lot of pvp have been playing the game for quite a long time and have loads of dough, or have mommy and daddy pay for their account.

Originally by: Tony Fats A carebear is one who does not accept that in the game there should be risk, and seeks to have the game mechanics changes so that they can mine/trade/whatever with no risk of non-consentual interaction with other players.
A miner who accepts that he can be stolen from and uses every measure to prevent it, is not a carebear.
A trader who accepts that he can be caught, destroyed, robbed, ransomed, etc and uses every measure to protect himself from that fate is not a carebear.
A "fighter" who categorically refuses to enter .4 to avoid any player interaction is a carebear, even if he drives a Raven and does level 4 missions.
What he said.
Basically somebody who would like CCP to soften the consequences of, or altogether eliminate, the interaction with other players (usually the consequences of non-consentual combat)
If a player stays in high-sec and is happy about it, he is not a carebear; the 'whining' component is an essential part of carebearism.
A -5.0 pirates whining they cannot enter high-sec space is a carebear; he is whining about the consequences of interacting with other players.
To the original question: making money has nothing to do with being a carebear, although a lot of the time 'carebear' is used as an insult to 'high-sec space industrialists, miners and agent runners' (in the same way 'griefer' is used as an insult to pirates; incorrect use of both 'carebear' and 'griefer')

Carebear is now a derogatory term the refers to someone who stands for hugging instead of fighting. (Aka anyone who wants to get rid of PvP in one way or another)
lol
actually in the game carebear is the BEAR(older players with huge skills) that CCP is protecting in terms that new players can kill them its mechanics of the game is designed to give huge benefits to olger players.that is a carebear.my opinion tho.

Carebear = someone who hates PvP and believes all PvP is griefing and want's the game mechanics changed to suit thier "carebear" style (non-PvP).
Know a Carebear by the fact they believe most PvPers are griefers or bad people, in game and real life.

Here is the defination I believe Carebear means.
It initially started in Ultima Online. It was a group of players who were sick to death of being PK'ed. So they created a guild called the carebear guild. It was all newbie staight off the rack characters. They would then swarm a PK'er who would slaughter them. Each kill would penalise the player so they would drop more if they died and due to the large numbers, even though they could kill a load fast eventually they would run out of ammo/regents and would be swarmed by newbie characters.
So they would take the actual combat out of the game for the other players. It got dirty later on because they would use any trick to stop PK'ing. One trick in UO was to get 30 or so people to log a GM call against a PK'er because if that many logged a call the GM would remove and sometimes ban the player (1 account is better then 30 accounts leaving).
The most common (across all games) is whining and whining about the same thing over and over to get some aspect removed that removes any danger of them getting attacked by another player.
But it generally refers to anti-pk type players that use/exploit game mechanics to stop PK'ers.

Edited by: Vaedian GER on 27/12/2005 10:05:31 A carebear is someone who likes the World of Warcraft PvP Style. Loose nothing, instant respawn, re-attack 30sec later.
Additional what Tony said.

Mixing with Deja and Tony definition
A carebear, is someone who avoid difficulty everytime "at all cost" He could be a pirate, but only if the victim could not fight back.... He goes for mission, but only on high sec, level 2 mission with a raven and an alt in scorpion...
I dont't "carebear" has a way to PvP or not. A carebear could go for PvP, but only in the best PvP corp/Alliance and only in 3 to 1 fight. Other time he has to go swimming, teach grammar to his little sister... I know lot of producer/trader who were far from carebear attitude, and some who are "the carebear"

As I understand it from reading these forums, "carebear" is a term used by vicious murdering scum to describe anyone who is not.

In other MMORPGs I was familiar with carebear being used to describe anyone who went out of his way to help out noobs, but this is definitely not the definition used by most of the people in EVE. Etymologically though, it makes more sense... |

A carebear is someone who will whine about dieing instead of learning about why he died and adapt.
Having no intrest in PVP does not make someone a carebear. Its when they whine about being killed instead of figuring out why, and try to change the entire game just so that they will never have to change the way they play.
And Complaining about dieing to lag is another story however, that just sucks.
PVP (space combat) is a way of eve. My hauler gets attacked I A. Target back and activate multiple ECM jammers to try and warp out B. Try to run and hope he doesn't have a warp scram, otherwise back to A C. Activate web and warp scram of my own because I was baiting him since I know he can't resist a mammoth.....Mmmmm smartbombs 4tw, of course the 2 BS in the adjacent system on standby helps as well
