I've never been a car guy and I doubt I ever will be. It will always be SUV or pickup and they are always be all wheel drive.

Toyota's are actually damn good cars, if a little bland. Be wary of buying a VW in the US though, the quality is crap compared to the European models, IIRC the only VW model for sale in the US that is built to European standards is the older model Passat, because it was built in Germany, the rest are built in either the US or Mexico. (Has since changed, the US spec Passat is now built in the US, and is nowhere near as good as the EU model)

If you're driving on the left hand side of the autobahn you're driving on the wrong side of it, if however you're in the left hand lane of the autobahn you're passing slower traffic, and you're meant to drop back into one of the other lanes once you've done so. If you don't you're technically breaking the law. At least that was the case when I attended fahrschule back in the 80's.

You could be right, it's been a long time since I've driven in Germany. What I was taught was that you stick to the right unless you're overtaking, the left lanes were strictly for overtaking, that said the fahrschule I attended was primarily aimed at UK and US servicemen and their families.

If it is the V8, it was originally a Buick 215 engine and has been kicking around the UK in various sizes, 3.5,3.9,4.0 and 4.2 Litre since the 60's, we finally stopped using it in 2006 but not before sticking it in some silly cars like TVRs.

After driving on them I can safely say its the most arseclenching driving I have ever done. You go to overtake a waggon, look in you mirror, see nothing, pull out and suddenly a 130 mph angry german in an audi is behind you.

Replace Angry German with 300lb Angry trailer trash lady and Audi with Junkyard quality 80's Camaro and I pretty much have the same thing, except they're breaking the speed limit. I guess I can understand one part of it seeing how much of our highways are still 2 lane after all these years, but at the same time we end up with straight away's that literally go on for as far as the eye can see.
Take Nevada for example. If you drive on 93 South, there are parts of it where all you see is desert and the road you are on going off into the horizon. With the exception of a town (by town I mean one road and 5 buildings), the scenery literally doesn't change for like an hours worth of driving.

Speaking of Nevada, my wife and her friend went blasting out of Laughlin, headed for San Diego... At 120+ MPH. In the middle of the night. They were getting passed.

Oh God ! Nevada ! Driving across ! One of the worst experiences of my life. The only thing that got us through was Metallica's Black Album over and over again for 8 hours.

But West Texas is worse, especially the 2-lane highways. I had to stop driving and let my travel partner take over the driving. It's so flat, monotonous and hypnotic, the whole road and everything started spinning like a tunnel in an old amusement park ride. I almost wrecked the car.
