It would also: - eliminate gate camping Why is this desirable?
- get people to spread out Where in Eve did you get the idea that the bunching up happens because of stargate distribution?
- allow traders to tend their routes more effectively Effectively how?
- allow miners to better move their goods Better how?
- allow produces to better sell their goods Getting silly now chap - stating the same baseless argument three times don't make it more persuasve...
- spice up life for combat pilots (PVPers) ... provide the thrill of the hunt and chase, instead of sitting and waiting No thrill can be gained when your prey can simply ignore you.
... allowing surprise attacks on the enemy How?
... provide a good environment for strategic and tactical planning How?
- reduces the need for huge numbers of book marks buhu?
- reduces congestion at hub solar systems Nope - you'd still get trade hubs, & it's player numbers that lag systems, not gates. Sorry.
What an amazingly crap idea - my congratulations. ____________________________________________

Well if you could choose between them, the cheap pilots would use stargates, while the ones that don't mind the extra cost use Transwarp.
As for people possibly getting stranded in a system with no fuel...enter a whole new gameplay dynamic (Search and Rescue).

Sorry, being told "omg you can't play for 2 days" isn't fun. Or indefinately if your alliance is beatern out of that region of space.

Using both gates and somekind of interstella drive could work, early on ccp could introduce an alternative to gates but leave the current gate system intact, this would give the option of either fast gate travel or slower travel. Then over time the devs could start to remove the least used gates outside of empire space and introduce player owned gates as a substitute. Then allainces could govern their territory but still be under threat from invasion, i think will add a new dynamic to the game and open things up on the frontiers. |

look
CCP knows this is a bad idea. they base their game on the stargates. the stargates are god. they are special
CCP will never do this. capital ships get jumpdrives because they need to have something to make them special besides being frikkin huge.
I know CCP wouldnt put some trash like this in. player owned stargates sound ok, but they should have a fuel cost based on the lightyears of the jump.
what will we call player owned stargates though? not POS... ------------------- uhh.. what does this button do? |

You can only get stranded through fault of your own...so what's the problem?
Obviously there should be some kind of warning when Transwarping to a system with no fuel sources available.

No, you might well depend on other ships with bigger cargo holds. That's called teamwork.
Shrug, allow transwarping without fuel with a 1-minute spinup, knocks random modules offline 100% of your cap and 1/100 the speed of a powered one. Might take you 10 mins to get to another system, but you can DO it.

That could work. Maybe even involve Cap Booster Charges. Emergency Transwarp Fuel.

Fuel naysayers should take into account the relative lack of ISK Sinks in Eve compared to ISK Wells.
Fuel is something everyone would need, use, and making it only available from NPCs would help stem ISK inflation.

If the gates were left as is, why could you ever get stranded and not be able to play? The transwarp would be an alternative method of travel at cost, not the only way. This cost being fuel since it is more convenient, it should come at a cost. If you run out of fuel, hey, you screwed up but it just means you'll have to lug the rest of the way home the old fashioned way and hope nobody is still camping gates.
Since other players will have developed more skillful tactics of catching people than camping gates, it would be unlikely that anyone would be using that method to catch people any more. There should be more 'skill' involved in catching people and those who really want to or need to will hone those skills.
The lamers who camp gates now just to shoot noobs who travel in lowsec without bookmarks use no skill at all. Let them whine that they can't rack up their kill scores. If you want kills, go out and work for it. You have to work for everything else in this game but kills are the easiest thing to get and is a very quick way to wipe out everything that the victim has worked hard to get. I worked hard for my BS, it should be equally as hard for you to catch me and destroy it.
Instas were an exploit used as a direct result of gatecamps, therfore IMO, gatecamps in lowsec should also be regarded as an exploit since you're tanking sentry guns that were put there to stop gatecamping 0.0 is a different matter since there are no sentry guns but similarly, without instas, you don't go anywhere in 0.0 unless you just enjoy dying.

This topic calls for the removal of stargates, and frankly I do too if a suitable replacement system can be done, so I'm discussing it that way.
A hybrid system is probably best, but instas will have to be killed for Transwarp to really be promoted as a mainstream way to travel. Or offer a relatively short travel time (insta jumps or not) over the current AP travel.

I'm just going to throw in that this is a bad idea, simply because it totally breaks the immersion of the universe of EVE. EVE was built around and functions based on, jump gates. The entire story of the 'verse is based on jump gates.
Provided you have a good set of insta's (I have decided they should never go ever) and take precautions (if you don't have insta's then for the love of god don't jump in 15k's from the gate in nonsecure space) then it's possible to avoid being gate ganked...most of the time. The risks of travelling in 0.0 make it awesome regardless!

I was discussing the option of removing gates / having some systems only transwarp accessable, s'all.
And no, Drizit, instas are not an exploit - please don't accuse people of exploiting. They were unintended, which is something completely and utterly different. Since they, they've become part of core gameplay and can't be considered anything of the sort anymore.

*gasp*
Thank you. At least I know now that at least a few people actually read my posts since this thread was bumped.
I have problems understanding the mentality of some of the people who post on here.
I know that just 'removing the jumpgates' isn't gonna work. Thus I posted my opinions on how you'd have to do it to do it right IF you were really gonna do it. (What a sentence. -_-'.)
Reading a few of the answers on here made me shake my head.
"Removing stargates would kill PvP." (<-Wth?)
True. It'd eliminate gatecamping (for rather obvious reasons). It'd also be an 'easy' fix to remove instas without removing/nerfing ANY of the other uses of bookmarks.
But kill PvP? I just listed FOUR POSTS WORTH of why it wouldn't on the top of the third page.
Seriously. Sorry for just picking out one of the replies, but responding to everything that has been said individually isn't something I'm bored enough to do right now.
Originally by: Yotoshi Akagi As said many times... Yes removing the stargates would kill off PvP... This game would collapse on the entire idea of removing stargates. This would remove war and fighting in general. It would end up making the game obsolete. And without people fighting and killing each other the economy in general would collapse. People would not be making any money on ships and equipment because no one would loose any of there ships or weapons. Listen its a bad idea in my opinion because without the loss of ships from war you end up kicking out more then one leg not just pvp in general.
Uhm, no. If you had read any of the more well thought out ideas written by the people who aren't against the idea, you'd see a ton of possibilites on how this could be done while actually enhancing PvP, not utterly annihilating it.
The only variant of PvP that WOULD be removed would be gatecamping. If PvP in Eve is nothing but gatecamping to you, you should try doing a few other things for a change. I'd see monitoring or patrolling a system (while maybe even allowing you to do some other things in the meantime, e.g. ratting) to defend it as a lot more interesting than sitting in front of a gate for several hour long shifts.
Even when invading space it wouldn't be too different. You'd just need a new kind of Interdictor, and something along the lines of a Jump Signature Scanning Ship with you, instead of relying on the stationary POS scanners.
That just removing the jumpgates, and giving all ships jumpdrives, while changing NOTHING ELSE about the game isn't going to work should be rather obvious.
Originally by: Yotoshi Akagi Also its like developing a whole new system that would have to be alot of work by the devs. Also there would be alot of bugs that would cause people to be angry with a change like this. Alot of game time would be lost alot of things would collapse people will leave the game. I just think in general its a bad idea that would effect alot of things it would effect players and developers. It would effect gameplay in general and it would require alot of man hours.
Yes it would take a lot of work by the devs. As does factional warfare, as did (and still do) the capital ships. Or about all other features of the game. I don't think CCP has ever been stopped by that in the past. 'cept for the lack of manpower maybe, with has been slowly decreasing over time.

Alon, I'm afraid it does not.
You're putting foward a dogmatic line with far too little technical detail, and it does not dispell the entire central-base/gank perma-safe concept.
Plus.. "Just" a new kind of interdictor, right. A skill-intensive, expensive and suicidal ship with a low supply. Fights at GATES, not gatecamping, would be removed. Fights at gates are 95%+ of the fights IN Eve, because they are chokepoints.
