ASA you install the new 64bit servers what will you do with the current hardware?
1- Will you keep it and start a new "low end" sharded MMORPG (classic style D&D)
2- Sell it
3- Use the coolers to fresh Oveur's beer cans
4- Give it to Hammerhead to surf the web for boobies
5- Use it as RAM to produce tech2

Make a new server with no T2, no POS, no jumpgates, no stations, no ships(only pods), no nothing, at the EVE gate and let the whining people play in peace

I suspect the old stuff will still be a part of TQ, it could simply be used to run some of the less intensive server side operations.

The old servers will be pretty close to their end of life.
I like the seti@home idea

Well, without a doubt it's getting old but the current TQ hardware is still quite powerful. Maybe the old hardware could run the market or something.
However, if it's going in the skip maybe CCP could auction off bits of it to players who want a piece of history :D

or make a working searchable forum of the old boxes instead of being a google appliance.
otherwise they can always feel free to mirror eve-files for me :)

It should not be powering just the market as it is doing so already there is more than enough power left to also make a better R&D and manufacturing system running out of it.
Make it do the calculations to have not just a active stock market, normal market and R&D system but add to that a means of planatary interaction and other nifty features... This system can now host +20k players and still run quite well for the most part (only a small part suffers lag you know) so it should be more than capable of sustaining an other few years as a calculation farm for the main cluster. (Gets CCP more bang for their buck as well) ------------------------------------------- Should you disagree with me, well I guess that is because I disagree with you. If you have a problem with that please feel free not to tell me. |

Edited by: HAMTRONIX on 29/12/2005 22:35:25 Now I don't know exactly how things work in iceland, but here in the USA you don't give away capital investments like that.
From a business perspective, it would be practical to sell the servers/equip at a price that is less than the purchase cost less depreciation. This allows ccp to to claim a loss when they file. If they somehow sell for more than the depreciated value, again, not sure about iceland, but in USA, the difference in price in this scenario would be treated as a depr recapture and the gain is treated as income and therefore taxable. Giving them away is not an option from a business perspective. By selling them they mitigate the cost of the new cluster, and hopefully knock down their income a bit at the same time resulting in less taxable income.
There are many places, institutions, emerging markets, etc etc where this type of hardware is still quite usable and in demand.

They're expanding the server base, not replacing it. The old servers will liekly continue to be used for low load systems.

personally, I'd *love* to see a version 1.0 of eve put up, just for a week or so, with open access to any player with an active account, just to let players see how much it's changed since day 1... with the only alteration being skills that did'nt exist at the time being scrubbed off and replaced with "not here yet"
it'd be fantastic to show the improvements.
