Well I got the basics down. I have a Merlin equipped with some basic offensive defensive equipment.
I assume if I go to an area where I could fight other players with out being attacked by guards(low security space?) I am more likely to be prey than hunter. If I can attack or be attacked by someone my level without NPC intervention I assume somone of a much higher level can attack me also.
So how can I find areas where there are NPC kind of targets which put up a good fight and offer some reward to killing put are not likely to destroy my ship. I am a Caldari in the Lonetrek area.
Also, I am a little unclear about where to go from here. I kind of understand that if I want to be a fighter, then I focus on money to improve my ship and skills and try to join a fighting Corporation. Otherwise its developing some skill like mining manufacturing or trading and using the this to accumulate money, but for what purpose? collecting more money? In fantasy/D&D MMORPGS some people do trade skills but 95% of the action is small group or large group combat in EVE I am not sure it seems like combat is not the focus or not the focus early on. Thanks in advance

Pants?
A place where you can find higher end NPCs without any risk does not exist. Either no risk in high sec empire with poor npcs or slight risk in low sec with better npcs.
Entering Low sec is easy, simply check the map for ships killed in the past hour and enter. Keep an eye on local at all time, if something that looks like a pirate enters the system, drop whatever youre doing and start warping between planets at random ranges/dock with a station/run back into high sec. -------------

if you'll be online 2 hours before downtime, you can fight on my side in Catch. Chances are you gonna die pretty quick tho, tho it depends on traffic. Sometimes there's nothing going on for hours

Edited by: Hulemand on 29/12/2005 02:45:12 Join a corp interested in PvP.
Do some agent missions and build up funds for PvP'ing. PvP cost alot of ISK in lost ships and clones ;)
You can either PvP in 0.0 where it is basicly Free for All You can fight wars where the enemy corp becomes open target anywhere (kinda like 0.0).
Or you can become a pirate. But that is hard in a Merlin

Well what to most players do? Like I said in other MMORPGs you are fighting things from day one. Your primary goal being to level and to acquire better armor an weapons. The part of EVE I have seen the last 10 days seems more "trade skill" wealth accumulation focused. AM I correct in assuming from the first post there is not an area where NPCs with decent rewards can be fought without risking being killed by high level Player controlled pirate ships. (Which is sort of like the PvP WoW servers)

Uhm.. there are so called rats that spawn in most astroid belts, in .5 sec they can be quite formidable, and player pirates (more like deathmatchers) still wont attack you.
If you want to go toe-to-toe with other players, either join a corp that is at war with another, or save alot of money, study tactics on the forums, and prepare to get killed a load before you get the hang of it.
Supposedly however.. 1VS1's are getting rare, as people dont want to risk losing their shp, you will probably end up getting raped by a group of experienced players, or have people run away when you start to hurt them. Just what i heard tho.

Not the focus early on...because basically you'd die
I'm guessing you're basically asking where to fight npc rats in your merlin...I would suggest doing level 1 npc agent missions in security or command or another fighting focused area. This will provide you with the locations of npcs to kill and also be fairly lucrative, but don't stick to that either or it will get repetitive and also takes you away from the group aspect of eve.
A way to get into that group aspect and still be fighting is to make yourself available to protect miners from npc rats; in that sort of role you would expect to either get paid or get a cut of the profits and still be fighting things and be in a group.
Just some ideas to get you started anyway.

I occassionally go "slumming" with a new character for a week or two as a vacation from higher end content just to see how things are.
Personally, I avoid low end agents at first and just hunt rats in belts. With a tier 3 frig like the merlin even with basic 1-2 week old skills you should be able to go find a nice .5-.7 security system, then just patroll the belts and kill the rats you find.
Once you get the hang of it and that seems too easy, try going down to a .4 sec system where you occasionally find warp-scrambling npc frigs and low-end npc cruisers. That'll be a real challenge. By the time you progress that far you should have enoguh isk to get your first cruiser, and probably some experience evading (or dieing to) player pirates. +++
It's called "low security space" for a reason. |
