I'm hardly one to scream GRIEFER at anyone. But today I heard about something happening that really seemed to fit the bill. I know its been petitioned but we all know they're a bit behind right now. So I'll ask all you fine EVE players if you think this is "griefing".
We all know the new canister flag deal started up to stop ore theft. This is what happend.
A certain pirate type corp of lesser repute parked their -1.9 and under guys in a newbie system. They put a can (at the belt) and offered people FREE STUFF in local. They basically lured new players to come out and take the stuff from the can. Then they ganked them.
Sure its "gameplay" but its also preying on players who can't even send an evemail yet much less know about criminal flagging. I mean its just "lame" with a captial LAME. I really think this is cheap. Ganking people at gates isn't enough for these losers they have to prey on the new Eve players?
So griefing or not? How say ye jury of Eve players?

Yes, but...
...they'll only get them once that way. Better be ganked in your first noob-ship than in your first cruiser.
I'd not consider it petition-worthy griefing unless the same individual is consistently pestered. |

I'd say it lame and unnecessary but I can also see the fun part of it I don't think a petition will help that much

Defo falls into the "LAME" catagory....but then to take stuff out of a can which gives you a warning, when there are loads of ships watching you......

abuse of your trust, via jetcan flagging, trade/escrow scamming, gang-warping to a POS in lowsec, etc is part of the game and is not petitionable.

Let me put the CCP response in for you shall i?
*This is not infact griefing, due to the warning when sumone opens another players can this can therefore eliminate any form of griefing*
Here's my reply
If you are stupid enough to fall for it, you deserve to die, newbie or not, patch notes clearly state the change and the process. We have begged long and hard for the can flagging to stop thiefs from taking what we mine/loot. I am all for it.

Edited by: Peter Armstrong on 29/12/2005 05:18:49 that is wrong and i think its pitsion worthy because people just started playing and getting killed just going to annoy them and quit and they dont understand the game just yet.
Please tell me who and what corp done this? because it is lame and dumb!! Its not even fuuny because its noobs.
If this going on in noob system then i think CCP should warn them. Only in noob system that is.
Oh and when it comes to patch note not everyone knows alot about online games. EVE my very first Online game and i know nothing at all at the time but those the days

It's lame, i wouldn't do it personally. But i do not think it is petitionable, and as was already said they will learn the lesson quickly. I'd just grab a decent ship and move the pirates stuff to my own can, then the noobs can have their free stuff and i can get a decent fight out of the pirates.

Hum... I dunno...
According to CCP's definition:
Grief play A grief player, or "griefer," is a player who devotes much of his time to making others' lives miserable, in a large part deriving his enjoyment of the game from these activities. Grief tactics are the mechanics a griefer will utilize to antagonize or fight other players.
which is a very, very ambiguous definition... how much is "much of his time"? How large is "in large part deriving his enjoyment"? And how can it be proved that the suspected griefer was enjoying himself due to the other guy's misery?
For sure, lamest tactic seen in a very, very long time... but impossible to mark as 'griefing' methinks.

Thats normal EVE piwate to you!
Do you think they care about community or that EVE gets new players? No way they don't. They only seek ways to boost their killboard rankings and wants to go "lol i popd thiz n00b lololool!" - And pirates wonder why people hate them so much. *sigh*
I will get flamed by saying that and at least one will say "omfg your so clueless". But hey, thats why I'm forum warrior, I don't care what you think of my thinking

What the Taleweaver said.
Lame in every sense...not so much a grief. And if that's how somebody gets their enjoyment from the gang (being an asshat) then they've recieved their reward in full. Let 'em have their silly little laughs, let the rookies learn, and leave it at that.

They have to learn eventually that you can't trust anyone in EVE. Better in your noob ship then at the hands of GH-SC, right?
People should try to help the little guy in this case though. I happened to hear of this the same way Archie did, and people who were trying to warn the noobs off went unheard because the lamers would spam the local channel so the warnings disappeard. Double lame. Smacks of knowing you can't hack it with real players so you have to **** in someone else's wheaties a bit to make yourself feel better. Typical mentality of the muffinmen...I mean, lamers though. _______________

i wouldnt even call them griefer, i think pathetic looser would be better. they are prolly ganking noobs because they cant win from anybody else. honestly, if your are a true pirate you want either good loot,a nice ransom or a good fight. none of these you will get from this pointless murder.

I'm no fan of this. It's taking advantage of someone's newness to the game mechanics and not any kind of "in game" experience.

It is pretty pathetic. I guess bragging rights around the ole pirate water cooler are improved if you can say that you pwned a newbie in a newbie ship who was armed with newbie weapons and a civilion shield booster.

ANyone who's been in the game more than a day is already aware of this trick. It has been discussed over and over in the rookie chat channel. So those who fall for it, are likely not to really lose anyhting but their free noob ship and a few thousand worth of cargo that can easily be replaced. I think this definitely would be grieifing, since their really is minimal reward to ganking noobs except for the sadisitic satisfaction of the griefer. That's why they're called griefers, bc they do things solely to annoy and give grief to other players, even if there is no benefit to their character.
