Any indication as to how this will interact with the EVE Universe?
Looks promising. WANT.
You see this? This right here is the kind of response we're looking for.
If you feel like producing a response other than this, then please give me your stuff and quit EVE. An in-character blog and a video: http://verinsjournal.blogspot.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu1mbsgo738

William Walker wrote:The only thing I am wondering is: how will it effectively get put into the EVE universe? Dust 514, in my opinion, still hasn't really connected with EVE.
Yet.
Look, I joined EVE about a month before Red Moon Rising, and since then it's grown and become something much greater than that. RMR turned EVE into a much bigger and more complete game than the first release version from 2003.
In the time since I joined this game, it's grown to include tech 2 ships, capitals, exploration and scan probes (since improved upon), the current fleet system, nine regions, wormhole space, six battlecruisers, four destroyers, the sov mechanic, bombs, overheating, TWO graphics revamps, heavy interdictors, electronic attack ships, black ops, marauders, jump freighters, Factional Warfare, Orcas, medals, Tech 3, epic mission arcs, sov overhaul, PI, Incursions, the Nocits, new avatars, CQ, fuel blocks, missile launchers, overhauled wardecs, mercenary marketplace, EWAR effects bar, new bounty system, crimewatch, the Venture, safety, revamped hacking...
you get the point. And that's not an exhaustive list.
Dust was formally released a mere three months ago. I know it feels longer than that because of the whole "open live beta" thing, but any complaints about the integration and completeness of DUST need to take into account the fact that it was only actually released on May 14th of this year, and it's only August now. 3 months. It's yet to have its first real expansion, let alone its equivalent of RMR or Apocrypha.
So it's hardly surprisng that DUST "still hasn't really connected with EVE" - it's a wailing newborn! However much bonding you can do with a three month old infant, you're not going to go fishing and drink beer with them for a few years yet. Again, spoken like somebody who hasn't played it.
Seriously. Nobody here has played SC, and maybe it will be better, we don't know. I have played EVR, and it was INSANELY good. I was bouncing like a teenager afterwards when I discussed it with one of the Rift developers. It's so good that despite being dirt poor I am absolutely determined to own a Rift now that I know Valkyrie is coming.
If SC turns out to be better than that then I will gladly concede the point, but we don't have any grounds to compare the two yet because nobody's played Star Citizen. You can't make any statements regarding the relative quality of the two games, the information just isn't available yet.

I think the selling point of the EVE games really will be the interconnectivity and the fact that you're dealing with other players in emergent sandbox gameplay rather than effectively watching a movie where sometimes you fail and have to go back to the start of the chapter. It's not so much a "hangup" as it is the unique feature of the EVE brand.
I really do hope that Valkyrie will involve connecting to Tranquility, but we'll just have to wait and see on that score. An in-character blog and a video: http://verinsjournal.blogspot.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu1mbsgo738

Quote:t's quite the little emo drama, amusing if a little repetitive.
...and bleeding frustrating. I've been playing EVE for coming on eight years now, I love it, I'm emotionally invested in it...
My response to projects like DUST and Valkyrie is "Great!". I don't understand how EVE fans can be anything but enthusiastic about more EVE. New ways to get into the setting, new ways to interact with other players, new angles on the universe. When CCP turn their attention to expanding the setting in the hopes of pulling more people in, it makes me more confident about the future of EVE, not less. I don't see how somebody can bemoan and insult these projects and still call themselves fans of the game.
CCP are not stupid. Daring, yes, but they aren't idiots. They wouldn't be doing this if they didn't have good reason to believe it would turn out profitably and well in the long run.
Maybe Valkyrie and DUST don't turn out to be the huge blockbuster hits of 2013/14. Who cares? EVE wasn't the blockbuster MMO of 2003. But here we are, ten years on, still producing legends and awed news articles, still being awesome, still swaggering around needing a fleet of freighters to carry our enormous tungsten balls. This despite EVE originally being a buggy, badly optimised, barely-playable piece of crap all but devoid of content when it was released.
Maybe DUST isn't the AAA shooter of the year. But I'll make you a bet - I bet DUST will still be around at Fanfest 2023. If Valkyrie is TQ-based, I bet it will be there too. And I bet by then they'll both have carved their own legendary niche and produce BBC news articles, alongside their parent game.
If you don't believe in that and want to make it happen, why are you even playing this game? An in-character blog and a video: http://verinsjournal.blogspot.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu1mbsgo738

Well, the DUST implant is just the ability to clone without needing a contained environment like the capsule. So, there's nothing stopping a fighter pilot from using the exact same implant. I've obviously gotten quite bitter since. I think the problem I am having is that I arrived during Apocrypha when everything was amazing, and played through with uninterrupted sub and essentially the prime of my Eve playing life was spent through a period where things were improving and expanding fast. That's not the case anymore, the impact the last three expansions have had on me don't really compare. I've become bitter because I enjoyed the previous expansions too damn much and want more of the same.
Hopefully we'll see another period as good as that at some point.
As I said - I've been playing since before Red Moon Rising. If you've become bitter within the last year and I haven't, might I suggest that possibly the reason for that lies elsewhere than in what CCP have been doing? Why do people keep saying "it's probably not going to be on TQ" or "I don't see how it could be on TQ"?
I quite agree, without an overhaul of the mechanics of both EVE and Valkyrie (assuming it remains essentially unchanged from the Fanfest build) I don't see how Valkyrie players could share the same in-game grid as EVE players and meaningfully, entertainingly or fairly contribute to the fight - among other things, under heavy TiDi, Valkyrie would largely cease to be fun unless you REALLY like bullet time. Maybe I'm wrong and it's actually a simple affair, but I doubt that. EVE fights tend to be slow, and take place in pretty open space around stations and stargates, whereas Valkyrie fights are intense, and had some asteroid "terrain" around to weave between.
Throw in the HP and firepower of fighters versus, say, frigates and getting Capsuleers and Valkyries onto the same grid in the same fight shooting at the same ships and receiving the same information and keeping that all balanced and fair for everyone involved begins to look like a nightmare. I wouldn't call it impossible, but certainly bloody difficult and liable to wash away several villages in the resulting floods of rage and tears.
TQ is more than one grid, however. None of that stuff is actually an obstacle to having Valkyrie connect to the server - there are other components to the EVE IP such as skill training, gear fitting, persistence, ownership, loss, sandbox, building and so on. All of which is handled by Tranquility.
If it does the same thing as DUST and has battle servers which communicate database info to TQ then I don't think it would even add much of an appreciable load to the server.

You're not getting it. if the game connects to TQ in any capacity whatsoever, then it's on TQ. End of.
As I said, I agree that it's unlikely for Valkyrie fights to take place on the same grid as EVE fights. But "not being on the same grid as EVE players" is not the same thing as "not connected to Tranquility."
It's the same server, and it handles a variety of different interactions, only one of which is "flying around and seeing other players and shooting them". An in-character blog and a video: http://verinsjournal.blogspot.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu1mbsgo738

I would be enthusiastic about more EVE it was actually part of EVE and not a SEPARATE ******* GAME. I want EVE to be awesome in itself, not just a part of some cluster of games that if put together - assuming you have all the hardware - potentially 'combine into' something awesome.
This attitude is kind of like if the pilots of those lions that formed Voltron were determined that their lion should be awesome in itself, and not just a part of some giant space robot.
I got news for you - EVE IS awesome in itself. We're flying a freaking black robot space lion here. And it has the potential to be part of something even MORE awesome. How are you not enthusiastic about forming Voltron?
... I may have let that metaphor run away with me.
The point is, there is absolutely nothing stopping the component pieces of the EVE IP from individually being excellent games. The potential for them to accomplish even greater things when taken as an interrelated unit in no way diminishes the quality of any single one of them.
They may start out rough (who knows, maybe Valkyrie will buck that trend) but CCP's style is to expand, and polish, and iterate, and improve. EVE was rough on launch, look at it now. DUST just launched, and is still kind of rough - that'll improve with time.
What exactly are you afraid is going to happen to EVE? The game's not about to start slipping backwards from where it is today if some of CCP's devs are working on DUST, and on Valkyrie, or WoD. It's going to keep moving forward and being expanded upon. It's not like there's a bungee cord attached to it that's going to yank us straight back to the Second Genesis build without perpetual Sisyphean effort by the dev team.
It's okay: you CAN be enthusiastic. you CAN be optimistic. Let go and be happy. An in-character blog and a video: http://verinsjournal.blogspot.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu1mbsgo738

And on what grounds are you basing the idea that we'd have EVE in Stations by now without DUST, Valkyrie and WoD? That seems like pure speculation to me.
CCP have been gun-shy about opening that door because their plans for it caused a literal in-game riot when they were leaked. To this day we've got idiots screaming about how they don't want EiS, even though alternatives have been presented that were totally in-line and supportive of the spaceships side of the game.
I very much doubt that sending 20 devs to Newcastle to work on Valkyrie would noticeably hasten or delay the day that door opens. I agree that I want it open too, but let's not fantasize about how it would be open if only it weren't for CCP's other projects.
Be enthusiastic for what does happen rather than pinning your hopes on what could.
