Edited by: Yatar Kindoki on 19/08/2003 15:55:37 It seems that the whole of internet is having some troubles at the moment. (Another virus cluttering it up?) A bunch of people in #eve-online have been doing traces for the past few hours and people are getting packetloss, bad routes (netherlands->nyc->london in my case for example). I just thought people should be aware of this before assuming CCP messed something up again :)
You might be getting "server node dropped" errors while the connection issues are not totally in CCP's domain. Also since CTDs have been linked with connection issues, a lot of the more recent CTDs might have something to do with this.

In game you can open a server status/packet in/out window thingy. Can't rember the key to open it.

If you really want to get a detailed view of how your connection with the EVE server is, you could try Ping Plotter using 157.157.139.1.

I haven't had any problems on chaos with losing connection to server. I'm guessing the servers (as they are in different locations) are being routed through different places.

People Stop blaming the internet and virus' for problems that are obviously server side on CCP's end. I am so tired of people sticking up for CCP on these issues that it is no longer funny. I can understand a game having connection issues at release but 4 months after release the game platform should be stable. If you truly want insight to the problem read my post in the CTD thread.

Edited by: Yatar Kindoki on 19/08/2003 17:23:24 I'm not trying to stick up to CCP, nor am I trying to give the internet/virus as the cause of all our troubles. The mere fact that connectivity problems cause CTDs is proof of bad netcode. Ofcourse I'm still making big assumptions here.
But anyway, me and some other people noticed a parralel between increasing connectivity problems to london and more and more people getting more CTDs. It makes perfect sense. Ofcourse there were more CTDs right after the patch but it's been getting worser today.

Those stats do indeed not show anything peculiar. However, if you would do a bunch of traceroutes to the EVE server you will notice a certain amount of packetloss building up until the point where one of the routers at LINX decides to use an NYC route. Then everything resets and it'll work fine for another 5 minutes or so after which the PL starts building up again. People in the UK and other aprts of Europe have been getting this, not sure what's happening on the other side of the ocean.

C&W don't use LINX - they in fact don't seem to peer with anyone. I used LINX to demonstrate that there's not some worm destroying the internet OK?
I see no packetloss or problems until it hits the cluster, at which point ICMP requests are ignored for perhaps 30% of the time. This indicates a very very busy machine. In itself this wouldn't be an issue to unduely concern anyone, but it indicates the problem lies either in the C&W infrastructure (unlikely as we'd have heard about this from CCP by now), or the server cluster itself.
Oh and as for it getting worse - has anyone stopped to think just how many "maintenance" downtimes there have been in the last 2 weeks?
At the end of the day if it was a network problem then I have no doubt at all that CCP would have stated this.

pretty selective is this extra traffic from the worm... are you sure it wasnt supposed to DDOS CCP and not ms update?
its server side, whatever it is, otherwise we would be getting these problems with other websites, with other games, and we arent.

CCP can blame it on a router if they like, however in all my time in the industry I have NEVER seen it take over 24 hours for an ISP to replace a bad router, especially a backbone router. This problem has been ongoing for over 2 weeks. Might be worse the last few days but the problem has been ongoing. I think CCP is simply trying to put the blame somewhere else.

Edited by: Turtle on 19/08/2003 18:15:23 I have not had any CTD at all in the last few weeks. Today the interent is slow for me in total. I took a look at my incoming traffic and am getting hit to the tune of 100 plus times a sec, all looking for port 135.
I don't know what is causing CTD's for people but with this type of traffic it is only going to make it worse. I run a hardware firewall so my computer never see's the traffic. I would think anyone running a SW firewall with this type of activity would be in trouble. Reason, your computer is using processing time to block every attack.

Why don't you stick a sock in it and wait a few days for this virus stuff to blow over. If there's still major CTD issues and you're entirely positive it's not your computer or a crummy internet connection on YOUR end, I'll give you an isk for your troubles.

Son, I don't know who the hell you think you are telling me, or anyone else for that matter, to "put a sock in it". in the first place, the issue with the CTD's were around long befor the first instance of the virus were ever encountered. As for my PC and internet connection, well I would wager both are better than 95% of those playing the game. I have been in the IT field for over 20 years as both a software engineer and Netwoek/Ststems Administrator and probably have more overall experience than you can imagine. So why don't you just crawl back under whatever rock it was that you crawled out from and keep silent until you have some idea what you are talking about.

Funny you should say that because a _lot_ of people, a number of them being "IRL" friends, have experienced Internet problems.....and they don't play EVE.
I, personally, get problems with Counterstrike, Firearms: Half Life and Neocron....which, even funnier, started on the same day.
It's not an isolated problem.
So maybe people should stop blaming CCP for once.

Edited by: agrizla on 19/08/2003 19:18:15 Umm a router problem eh? I've been running a looping tracert for the last hour - clean as a whistle. 20ms max all the way and zero packet loss.
Soooo, why has the client just sat there for 5 seconds failing to respond before dumping me back to the login screen and telling me that the server disconnected me?
I repeat. No PL. No spikes. Game lags like hell and then boots you out.
Edit - oh and I see lots of outstanding calls (using the monitor) and then wham. Toast. These calls build up gradually and are responded to more and more slowly by the server until either the client or server seems to finally decide you're not connected. Probably the client does rather than the server issuing a disconnect notification.

Edited by: Yatar Kindoki on 19/08/2003 19:19:14 Ok small correction might be in order, I wasn't sure about the virus thing in the first place. And it seems the virus thing is not related to the connection issues I, and other people have been having.
I still think part of it is a networking problem though, as the routing still goes whack from time to time. Everytime I get a "server node down" message I clearly see 100% pl and a dead route going to NYC. I don't understand why some people don't have anything odd in their traces and why some other people do.

Well I'd assume that if you're going via NY then there's an issue there (are you going via uunet by any chance?).
I don't. I go from mfnx's border router to cw's border router in London - I don't leave the UK. No route flapping, no packet loss, no spikes. Still get booted when lots of others do.
If I'm being booted because others have network issues then it is truly dire server-side error-handling code. Oh and it won't be a quick fix if that is the case.

Edited by: agrizla on 19/08/2003 19:43:15 Marquise you have route flapping. That'd do it to you. However this sort of thing is not uncommon on Blueyonder - yes I know it's occurring past their network but you're only seeing the outgoing route.
Blueyonder (Telewest) and NTL seem to have issues like this two or three times a week. Go ask any of the Barrysworld (sorry I mean game.net) network guys - NTL and Telewest are the absolute bane of their lives
I'm not seeing any flapping at all on my connection, yet the same disconnections are happening to me. Ho hum....

AKA they don't actually have a clue what is causing it but "hey there's this worm propogating and everyone's heard of it...."
Sorry to be so cynical but look - every time they have an extended downtime for "maintenance" the situation is worse after downtime than it was before. Every time since the "extended, extended then extended some more" maintenance day. You just have to look at the eve-i server status page to work this out. Coincidence or cause and effect? Make your own minds up.

fair enough, if this is a common problem.... but why am I only seeing CTD's after the 1165 patch?
before patch 2 - count em... 2 CTD's
after patch - lost count, unplayable most of the time
just a question though... why would Telewest be involved if the route flap was in CW (Cable and Wireless) routers?

So (simplistically) one of Telewests routers throws a wobbly and refuses incoming connections then the route would more than likely change on outgoing connections too. It depends on how they (and their upstream supplier) have setup their connections to the internet in simple terms. Note to anyone who understands BGP - this is meant to be a simple explanation OK?
Edit - maybe simpler : If you have a downstream customer who has a problem that is degrading their network and having a knock-on effect on yours then you'd probably want to switch them over to a lower capacity route until they sort it out. Sorry - it's hard to explain in simple terms
As to why you haven't seen it before - no idea at all. It's a fairly regular occurrence that their primary routing fails - then again it tends to stay that way for a while. Maybe they're trying to fix it If you don't play latency critical games (like FPS) you probably wouldn't notice.
I don't think it's network related anyway (although there may be a component of that in it for some people). I was playing immediately prior to downtime and it was fine. After the extended downtime (for database maintenance) I got disconnected 3 times in the first 20 minutes.
Edit again - what I'm trying to say is that in Marquise's case there is something specific to the route she is taking which is causing flapping (and her ISP is not unknown for it). I still have seen no instances of flapping on my connection so that sort of rules out it being a purely C&W problem (although they could have some bizarre BGP issues). Regardless of which I still get booted when hundreds of others do.
Sorry - this post is pretty garbled now

Its funny - in the past few days, several of my old friends from everquest have had CTDs, or really, really bad lag in a time of day when the servers are relatively quiet.
I've not had CTD yet myself (though could happen when my system locks up, which occurs several times a day but is my system, not the game or CCP, as I get same lockup while typing letters in MS Word).
Maybe its this worm. Maybe its causing problems on the internet for some. Maybe its causing problems on the server. Maybe its just bad code somewhere. But does anyone think whining about it on here will help fix it? It seems now to be a major problem (having got far worse over past few days, according to posters). So what has happened in that time? You've got the worm. You've got a recent patch. You've got some of us having other problems with internet, or people in other games having bad lag etc.
It may not be a single cause - could be a whole load of causes together. Give them a chance to see what can be done to fix it.
If the problem is totally at CCPs end, they can fix it. If the problem is in the internet, presumably many people will fix it (or get software enhancements & fixes). If the problem is the worm, that will eventually be scrubbed.
So stop whinging about CCP doing something about it - they should be already aware of the problem, and be doing what they can. Just don't expect them to do a massive amount if the problem lies elsewhere.
