Edited by: DeepScarlet on 03/01/2006 16:37:37 Hey eve,
Recently, returning my computer from a network with a very strict firewall, to one without a firewall, I have found it can't get rid of all the strict settings my computer picked up!
EVE works thankfully, but nothing else does! No limewire, no bittorrent, no *cough*WOW*cough*.
The programs are all saying things to the effect of 'a firewall is blocking your connection on this port'. Really starting to bug me, and would be rly appreciative if someone could help me sort this, THNX!

Was your machine part of a domain? If so it may retain settings from that.
Need more info I'm afraid before I can help much. |

It was a very big university network. Any info you need will try my hardest to provide!

Did the University techheads do anything on your machine when you took it there?
Also have you checked the windows firewall? It can be set for exceptions, try looking there first to set what its allowed to do.

Okay, techheads did not do anything to my pc when i took it there. I gave them a 'mac'(i think that was it!) code or something, but apart from plugging it in, that was the only interaction with the university.
I've always had the windows firewall disabled, and it still is.

Well if you gave them the Phyisical address from your network card and they did nothing on your system...should not really have any settings left over, you are no longer attached to the uni network right? Hmm - I could understand it if you had installed a firewall client on your pc and it hadn't removed itself completely. I've seen this with Zonelabs (Checkopint) Zone Alarm where - for some reason - the truevector service was still running after the app was removed. I had to disable it in msconfig from the startup section.
An external firewall should make no difference.
The only thing I can think of - if you've been on another network, have you changed your TCP-IP settings from the normal. Perhaps from DHCP to a static address?
Just some thoughts. Blackheart |

If the techies asked you for your mac address then maybe they gave you a fixed IP address? Normally, you would have 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically' checked in your TCP/IP settings for most ISPs.
Having said that, 'a firewall is blocking your connection on this port' is quite a strange message to receive if the windows firewall is disabled as you say, and you don't have any other firewall software installed.
