I'm about three quarters of the way done with the book and I really don't see what all the fuss is about. Maybe there's some huge, amazing surprise in the last quarter of the book that I've yet to read, but so far it's just Ender being a whiny strategic genius.
Read Revelation Space by Alaster Reynolds if you want really cool sci fi. I kept picturing Eve in my mind. |

I don't see the big deal about him being anti-gay marriage. Just about a billion other people are anti-gay marriage too. Just what the author's opinions about certain issues have to do with his book that has nothing to do with said issues is a mystery to me. Now this boycott of the film and such by the pro-gay marriage team is just ridiculous and hypocritical. Let the man believe what he wants to believe. Sure, he's a **** but who cares? Why is it such a big deal? |

Also, most overrated sci fi book ever. Yes, the concept is cool but that doesn't take away from the fact that literally the first 3/4 of the book is superfluous diarrhea of the mouth. |

That's your choice to make, but it's just his opinion. It's not like he's running for president and plans to ban gay marriage or anything. Am I missing something? What if the boss of CCP were anti-gay marriage? Would you stop playing Eve? How does his opinion on the subject affect your life? That's what I'm getting at. Is the movie going to be homophobic? I seriously doubt it, as the book doesn't even get close to the subject. I'm pro-gay marriage, but if I wrote a movie that had nothing to do with it, how would it affect people who were anti-gay marriage?
I dunno, the book just seemed a little meh. Of course it's just my opinion, but having heard so many people rant and rave about it, I was rather disappointed. Maybe I was expecting too much. Maybe I should've read it in 1984 when I was 6 years old. Ok, the twist (if you want to call it that) was interesting and inventive, but I had already figured it out by the time I got there.
Just as there are requirements for having one's criticisms taken seriously, so should there be requirements for having one's praises taken seriously. |

So you would stop enjoying something you enjoy because the creator has a different set of values than you, even when it wouldn't affect your life in any way? Why? Don't you think that's a little hypocritical? That's something right out of the Republican Party playbook.
What's he going to do with the millions he'll make off of it...buy a new house and a new car and invest it, right? You act like he will be able to wield giant anti-gay armies capable of taking Glee off the air and preventing gay marriage in certain states. He's a science fiction writer whose skill is debatable, and he's an arrogant tool. He's not a threat. He's not Chick Fil A, who are owned by a multinational conglomerate and whose toxic attitude towards equality REALLY CAN affect the political landscape with lobbying.
I'm pro-gay marriage, but if a band I like isn't pro-gay marriage, I'm not going to stop listening to them. That's some PMRC mentality right there. That's the road to censorship and, ironically, intolerance. |

And now the truth comes out. You blame other people lobbying politicians, but not the politicians. You wouldn't mind moving back to the state that kept you from getting married, but you have a problem with Orson Scott Card being anti-gay marriage. Take a step back a second and look at this.
Krixtal Icefluxor wrote:Who said anything about not participating if an entity does not announce being absolutely pro-gay ? I sure did not. You sure did.
Uh, well, you did. Also, I didn't say "not announcing being absolutely pro-gay". Please read more carefully. I said it wouldn't change anything for me to be at odds with a band who was anti-gay marriage even if I were pro. You said it: Krixtal Icefluxor wrote:.........and yes, I'd quit EVE in a heartbeat were that true. But Icelanders would not be that uncool..
Krixtal Icefluxor wrote:And when there is no place left to get married ? ? Whereto then ? And yes, I want to desperately move back to California. And with that statement, you seem to have an ulterior motive of a sort here, on top of the backwards thinking in your arguments.
Ulterior motives? What ulterior motive would I have? I moved out of the states because of the stupidity going on there.
Backwards thinking? You said you wouldn't support the film of a book you love because the author is anti-gay marriage and you fear that with whatever pennies he earns in respect to the massive amount of capital required to affect policy he'll be able to effect change just because he made a movie. Do you hear yourself?
I asked you if you would quit playing Eve if the boss were anti-gay marriage. You replied with the above post that you've already made clear that you would. I pointed out the fact that that is the very same intolerance of other people that you are railing against, and now I seem to have backwards thinking. Wat?
I'm pro-gay everything. This, however, is just silly. |

(He wants no chance his money would be used that way) Back on topic about what you wrote earlier Astenion, When I first read the ender series I was very young and thought it was the most amazing sci fi books i ever read. Then I re read them when i was all grown up and realized it wasn't all that great, still enjoyed the book tremendously, but still not a fantastic piece of literature. I guess it was the concept that excited folks the most i dont know.
That's pretty much how I feel about it. It reads more like a novella from a gifted high school student. It is entertaining, but I found myself on numerous occasions kicking myself for not reading another book instead. I like to finish books one at a time, even though occasionally I'll read a few at the same time. |
