I've been trying to write a guide for a couple years now but I can't seem to wrap my head around it alone. I think it has potential to turn EVE on its head and push CCP and its players down the next road to an advanced business and economic simulator.
If I was a writer There are two real life business theories that need adapted to EVE. Without the adaptation they will be scoffed at by all except the largest Alliances. Instead of being a tool of a few, I think they need brought mainstream. The two ideas are Business Modeling and the Theory of Constraints. Spreadsheets already exist on the net to explain this. I do recall that accurate models involve calculating and applying some probabilities. These are not outside excels abilities at all.
Theory of constraints in its simplest terms are about removing bottlenecks and developing an optimal product mix with special weighting to potential sales and production capacity. In EVE an additional concern would be time available to play.
Business Modeling is a way to quickly sketch out an activity. Its a creative planning tool, it has 9 building blocks, activities, funds and efforts flow between them. The contents can be adapted for products or services. Its adaptable, I recently sketched out one with piracy providing fear as a service that creates excitement for players and revenue for CCP. Its adaptable beyond just industry is my point.
Of course it also covers the activities side rather than just the marketing side. Stakeholders and rudimentary project planning come into play, the ever present costing that we already do so much of, delivery channels be it info or products are considered. Very exciting to me are the innovative revenue models and customer segmentation examples. They really get the creative juices flowing.
Its the whole corporate ball of wax. It was developed as a phd project, the professor developed it to spread business modeling into impoverished 3rd world countries. Not only can you do clay pots, you can create disruptive innovative models like the ITUNES and Skype. I think it could and should be adapted to EVE with great application here and helping create an entrepreneurial spirit in real life and dare I say, making the world a little better or at the least, a little newer. |
