Motherboard: Asus KR7A-133 AMD Athlon XP 1600+ 768MB RAM PC2100 (they are matching as far as i know) (one 256 one 512) Geforce Ti4600 128mb (PNY I think is the make? I don't know, I won it off some Star Wars Jedi Knight / Gateway/nVidia contest a few years ago, has been working great for me minus being a hair off for battlefield2, yet having more power than a card capable of running it...stupid shader version or whatever)
160GB Western Digital HD (SATA) (secondary where eve is installed) 40GB Maxtor HD (primary for windows and other system files) Windows XP Pro Sony CDRW/DVDR (i heart this drive, inexpensive and fast) Floppy disk drive (wow it's old) Zip disk drive Eagle Power supply - 300w
PCI Cards: WinTV Soundblaster 512 Network card (linksys, i believe..that or netgear, but i think linksys) Adaptec PCI -> SATA card
Note that the PCI -> SATA card is new as is the HD, but I had EVE running off a 120GB IDE drive recently. This is a recent change as of two days ago. I don't believe it to be the reason for any problems, although I hoped it would fix some...wishful thinking.
I run spyware doctor and nothing else for virus/spyware, minus windows firewall.
That's about it...Newest(er) nvidia drivers. Newest bios, newest sound card drivers. New all drivers I believe.
I disabled sound in EVE. I ran a memory test and it didn't show any problems with the ram.
I am so baffled it's almost unbearable. This is a somewhat recent installation of windows...It hasn't been on the machine for more than 8 months.
On another note: Age of Empires 3 crashes to desktop on me too...and gives me a windows error message about send or don't send.
Second vote on the power supply not being up to snuff. The nVidia card requires more than a 300W supply IIRC, and you have (by the looks of it) very few if any expansion slots left. You have a couple power hogs installed there, not counting the vid card.
Also, check case temps. If you are in a mini or mid tower you don't have alot of room for air to circulate to keep things cool.
Furthermore, my nVidia Ti4600 suffered a fan failure about a month after I got it. If this is the only fan malfunctioning in your system, it could certainly cause the problems you are suggesting. If the vid card overheats the current app running will terminate, but sometimes XP will not crash. Then, while you are clicking "Don't send this report" and thrashing in frustration, the card cools down, you go to fire it up again, and you get back in... until the problem repeats itself.
Finally, up your memory if you have some cash left. I wouldn't recommend less than a gig for any XP gaming machine.
