what about coolest old job? I used to be the night desk clerk at the girls dorm. I was allowed to bring my own computer up to work. So essentially- I'd get paid pretty decent to sit around all night playing CS and talking to girls. I WIN :)

one of the coolest jobs I know someone has is freelance theoretical physician. Basically, you do some research one day in the week, the rest you are at home doing whatever you like, either waiting for an idea, or waiting to get a phone call from a company. In the last case they have a physics problem that needs solving, and you have to find the solution. Earn heap-loads of cash by playing EVE all day

I can top the freelance physics job (although I use alot of physics in it..)
Lead Programmer, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Producer on a new MMO (what? its a 6 man company, lol) I get to work my ass off, not get paid for it and sleep 3-4 hours a night, whilst doing all that and being at college at the same time. Yeah fun...

I used to be a hotel porter, which was the most fun i've had at work.
You can live off yout tips and wander round the hotel all day chatting up the staff.

research staff in a uni while doing postgrad studies. Get paid to some fun cutting-edge stuff while being in a very relaxed enviroment. On the bonus, you get to do as much forum whoring you'd like on certain day. Which reminds me, I gotta get back to doing stuff, deadline is on the 20th.
Anyone got ideas how to do FSD (TDT) from lexical chains?

iirc C4w3 brought a laptop when he was assigned to his army duty abroad a year or so back, gotta keep those skillpoints coming...
Personally I'm a homeless drifter, always searching for open WLANs to play EVE on my laptop from 1994. But really how cool is that?

I agree with Hans, because I *have* done the iraq thing. The coolest and most rewarding job is military service. The pay sucks, the hours are long, and most of us do more before breakfast than most do in a normal day--but it's worth it when you go home and take your boots off. :)
I was always a FPS fan, unreal series, doom/quake, etc. I have always been scared to play any rpg/mmorpg type games for fear of getting super addicted. I even worked for SOI doing database stuff for everquest in 1999, and I never played the game once. So now look at me, introduced to Eve, and now I can't dream or go to work without Eve somehow penetrating my thoughts :P Is this eve normalcy, or am i sick? peace

I'd like to do some game programming or 3D design but since my crappy school decides teaching Oracle & ERP-packets is more intresting, i guess i'll have to learn 3D design on my own.
Other than that I'd like an R&D job in things like robotics or A.I. but you need to have university diplomas for that and i'm not that intrested in theory (give me stuff to work with instead of facts to remember)
So i'm now halfway in the 2nd year of my college (3 year informatics course) and i still haven't learned anything decent sooo untill they start to actually challenge my brains : If CCP wants a good coffeemaker : i'm here for you dudes!

meh 3d modelling isn't hard to learn. Get yourself a good 3d-package (I use lightwave) and a good book, with enough practise you see that most things are actually real easy.
Robotics or AI souns extremely cool ofc. Spearheading the industry!

Military Service is the best thing I think. True it can be dangerous, true there are some aspects you that you won't like.
However the good things are far better than the bad things.
I've been in the US Army for 6 years now, just reenlisted for a third term to add on 5 more years, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. -------------------------------------- US Army Photos 2005 Soldiers Creed |

I have noticed alot of military guys, mainly marines/army playing this game! there is even one corp that is exlusively army =)
as for the 3d modeling, animation stuff. I dabble in it myself as a hobby. A TON of great resources out there, you can get trial versions of maya, 3dsmax, truespace, and maybe lightwave. Alot of industry tools there, and while some are definately harder with a steeper learning curve, test em all and pick your pleasure. Also, a great one for it's price vs it's output is vue 5. It's phenominal! I'll post some pics later. When I was a heavy unreal player, I did models, mods, etc. and it was quite fun. Imagine running around a FPS game and all the enemies heads were replaced with models of your in-laws it can be done! hehe

There was an article in spin magazine couple years ago about the life of a music talent scout. they interviewed a couple guys from sony and wb. they claimed to often stay awake 3-4 days at a time, ingest massive amounts of drugs and alchohol, loads of sex, eat good food, and scout for new artists. all while getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars.
on the realistic side.. a fireman would be cool. in the states you work 9 days out of the month.. give or take a couple days. get paid fairly well, and can retire at a relatively young age. besides, women love the uniform.

My friend studied Robotics and cybernetics for three years and now works as a cleaner in a pie factory... Not that I'm making any connections between employability and THAT degree choice...
Hmmm, I work as a trainee manager in a factory - i was managing 30 guys during the day, coming home, logging on, and managing thirty guys all evening... Not telling which bunch were the best and caused me the least headaches!
Coolest job I've ever had? Charcoal burning in the middle of a wood was pretty weird. Crewing a boat for a month in France was probably the best yet.
And I always wanted to work on rockets - that way you could turn round and say 'It doesn't take a rocket scientist - and I should Know!'
