first off i have to say "rofl" @ all the ppl saying what CCP will and will not do, as if they know lol
second the concept for this idea is not new to mmorpgs, and its a very valid idea. the main difficulty is how to implement the idea, as has been pointed out this is not about skill diversity or "tough luck for training a skill that turns out to be useless" how nubish is that kind of immaturity. The fact is Eve unlike RL is fluid in that whats acceptable and workable today might be changed ina patch/hotfix/contents release tomorrow. It is only right that all players be able to in some small reasonable way be able to realign their skill focus to fall into line with changes to the game world. if you trained for a time to do something in Evebut a patch changed or removed the use of that skill would you not expect some sort of skill rebate?
one way Eve could do it would be to provide one use skill resets at SP benchmarks. for instance sank lets say every one million SP you get a reset.
Each skill is grouped according to the primary and secondary attributes, and SP gained via a rest can only be spent on skills with identical attribute focus.
with the exceptiong of learning skills (which someone acurately pointed out have already contributed to skill points gained) each reset effects a single skill and can only be used once and the effect is not reversable, the use of a reset reduces the skill level by 1 level and awards 75% of the SP invested as a rebate, which can then be added to a relevant skill, however the points change would not be instantaneous but would effectivley speed the training of that skill, in other words the SP rebate would be added over time to the SP generated through normal training. note this could be spread over several skills,
but eventualy the pool of the rebated points would become empty and skill training would return to normal. for example bob has large hybrid lvl 4 but wishes to drop this to lvl 0 as he no longer wishes to use large hybrids no more, he would require 4 resets, and he would thus get back 75% of the SP invested to get him to lvl 4 large hybrid. he immediately looses the skill, and he then chooses to invest it in training crusie missile to lvl 5, hes is at lvl 3 at the moment, so as he is training he will gain SP from normal training as well as rebate points from the pool. the exact rate at which points are drained from teh pool could be decided by learning skills?
just a thought, i would love to loose my barely trained industrial skills as they will never be used again and would give a minimal increase to my other skills.
I think something like this is essential to help all players up to date with the game enviroment, and after all this is a game not a straight jacket, a modicum of retrograde skill changes would not screw anything up, and as i say its a vital part of many mmorpg as players desire to try out new things.
