It takes roughly 100mil isk to drop a player owned gantry or customs office. Ideally you want to earn that investment back within a reasonable time frame.
My questions towards parties owning these are these:
Which locations have do you find to be more profitable and why? What is the average time require to recover the initial cost of the infrastructure?
My questions to people running PI in lowsec are as follows:
What do you look for when deciding on a system? Does it need a station? Do you require the taxrate to be below 10%? Below 5%? Do you prefer systems that are directly adjacent to a highsec system? |

We had a little discussion about that further down the threads, I'd look over https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=276783&find=unread if you haven't already as it touches on the same questions. |

If you have a large stockpile of P1 material and multiple accounts capable of PI you can quickly recover your capital expenditures for the POCO by making P4/P3 material. Recommend having a jump freighter and station in the PI system. Look at PI taxes in neighboring systems and find a happy medium. |

The other thread is of limited use to me. Checking individual planets for command centers is a good tip, but it's hardly manageable for dozens, if not a hundreds of systems. I guess I could extrapolate findings ...
I (we) also have no interest in doing PI at all. We would simply like some insights regarding locations of POCOs and the effect those location have on profitability. |

There are too many variables. You have to monitor traffic to see where profits are viable. Or pay someone to do it. If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there. |

Seems best to post in this one instead of starting a new one.
I can't find exactly what it takes to get my own POCO going.
Do I need to destroy the interbus Customs office before planting my (corporation's) own ?
Any idea about how long it would take for a single bomber shooting torpedos? (say with max skills)
Do player POCO's and Interbus POCOs have the same hp ?
Thanks in advance for answers or answers to a question I should be asking instead. nothing-á |

To be completely honest, I got into the POCO business not to "make a profit" directly from the POCO.
Me and mine would use PI as an income supplement, and would take over POCO's in our home systems and set the tax rate to 1-3%. When comparing this to the interbus tax rate of 17%, it took 1-2 months before I recovered the cost of the POCO by simply avoiding the NPC tax.
At a 2% tax rate for neutrals, some of these continue to turn a small income stream (100m/month for a system), but nothing really valuable.
If I were going after highsec POCO's to "make a profit" just from tax revenue, then you really need lots of people using the planets.
I would strive to do the following: Locate desireable planets in lower sec status (0.5 is probably better than say 0.7 systems). Plasma & Lava planets are good for T2 commodities. Barren planets are great for advanced commodities (which will do lots of import/exports to up your profits).
Have them nearby a Market hub for PI. If you aren't next to a Market hub (Jita, Amarr, etc), you'll probably need to make your own market hub.
Advertise: You need to get players to use your planets. This also makes you a target, but without customers your rate of return will be terrible.

I personally use an Oracle to take down POCO's. Realize, the interbus CO will have 10m HP, and if your oracle does 1k dps (probably less), it will take 10k seconds or about 3 hrs to destroy it. One friend, and you reduce this in half, get 4 people, and its down to 45 minutes.

Best way to recover your investment is not from the taxes, but from being tax free on your own PI. POCO tax is mostly just a bonus, unless you get a really good planet, but those get fought over, so then you need to be able to defend it. |

Thank you Gizznit ... you gave me the answer I was hoping for when I chose to phrase the quetion as 1
I just wanted to get an order of magnitude and ... lol well,
I made the question a bit more open ended by asking about "one pilot" rather than "how many hp" to flush out other thoughts which a few provided. (and yes... ; ) the "if I bring 3 it takes a third of the time" was part of why I chose one.. easier to mutipy 1 by 3 and 1 by 5 than to think of 5/3 rds of how long it would take three pilots... : )
I suppose asking about HP would be enough but, sometimes there are other factors like shield recharge (if there were a shield) or the resistances a structure might have and whether the resistances themselve wane as the integrity of the armor wanes....
... I'm never quite sure about the damage adjustment factors ...never bothered to look at the real numbers for moving objects and tracking issues etc.
--- the question also helps in terms of opportunity cost of time etc...
The reason for the question had more to do with having a "tax shelter" rather than a "toll bridge" ... Taxes ! who likes Taxes ! nothing-á |

Since pocos aren't that hard to kill, viability will drop if you aren't willing to defend it. As for scouting look around systems for pilotsiin space. Compare to planet variety and number in system to find likely pi hotspots. Closer to market hub = more traffic.
Remember the more popular planets will be harder to defend your control over. Expect some nullsec alliance interference in hotspots. |
