I've just managed to run EVE on my notebook without this horrible 'black screen' problem I had.
In order to do this you will just need to replace resFace.stuff file with the 3796 edition one. Be sure to make a backup copy of 3805 version in case you need it for the future patching process.
Have fun!
Ah... in case you don't have this 3796 version of resFace.stuff file (I didn't manage to find it on the 'stuff file download' page here on eve-online.com, so had to do the whole 3550->3582->3796->3805 thing manually to get the desired file), I've put it here for public download: resFace.stuff.3796.rar (17 446 047 bytes, WinRAR archive).
I hope I won't get hurt by CCP for posting this info, because it seems to be the only way for me to play EVE until a new patch for the latest patch for the latest content patch comes out. Anyway, if somebody at CCP thinks it is not good to publish this - let me know and feel free to delete this post.
PS. I have ATI Radeon Mobility with latest Omega ATI drivers here - definitely out of supported video card list for EVE, but I don't have anything else, sorry. Hope it will work for Intel integrated video cards also.
PPS. Ah... and this one: please do post some feedback here if this workaround helped you to get rid of the 'black screen' bug: it will bump the thread and let others know it's working.

Well so far it works for me, wonderful, how did you stumble across this idea, even if it doesn't last long Ive changed to a long skill which is important with patch's causing havoc left right and centre.
Thanks again.... Don't try to be a great man, just be a man and let history make it's own judgements.

Omega ATI drivers are not (but are indentical to) official ATI drivers and I don't think they are actually required for this fix. I just posted this for more information about my notebook specs (official ATI Catalyst drivers usually can't be installed on notebook computers).
Anyway, I've just edited the post to include the link to www.OmegaDrivers.net web-site if you need them.

This is exactly what Omega drivers are made for! If you have a notebook - grab them immediately!
Technically speaking, they are the exact copy of the latest ATI/NVidia drivers, but with some INF files unofficially tweaked to accept notebook versions of ATI and NVidia video cards PCI signatures (you know, something like PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4153&SUBSYS_4C501019).

Why the hell isnt CCP coming with this solution.
Because this is effectively just a rollback for the resFace.stuff file changes... They don't like to do rollbacks, remember?
An important addition to all users of this temporary solution: you should manually revert resFace.stuff file back to patched one (3805 version) when new patch from CCP comes out - otherwise this version will fail the patching process.
I will now add this important warning to the initial post.

Cant believe my eyes. What a great advantage these new Omega drivers. Never thought screen could be so sharp. The drivers they give with the notebook where really crap. Now the only thing that must be fixed is the crash issue every 10 minutes.

If you have a Mobility Radeon you can install the official ATI Catalyst 5.13 drivers with DHmodtool. I'm running on an ATI Mobility 7500 with 32MB on the laptop, and RMR 3805 (no tweaks with resStuff or whatever). Works for me and mine, your mileage may vary (WFMAMYMMV).

Some may have to download winrar and decompress the file.
What i did.
Download the file store it in a seperate directory then eve AKA c:\downloads
Download winrar @ http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm rename c:\program files\ccp\eve\resFACE.stuff to resface.stuff.3805bak
extract the file to c:\program files\ccp\eve
that will give you the ability to replace the correct version during patch time by deleting or moving the 3796 version and renaming the resFACE.stuff3805bak to resface.stuff

I forgot to add, i played over 6 hours yesterday evening without so much as a hiccup. So without question, this file is a definete culprit and needs to be addressed by CCP. What i dont get is why fix it if it isnt broke. i did not see anything yesterday abnormal after putting this Playerfix in place. My guess is this file was adjusted for some kind of lag fix.

Dear Rantor,
Thanks for your "fix".
At first hand, it did not work really for me, just reduced the frequency of the crashes. I used to have a game crash, followed by a fuzzy looping sound then auto-reboot of my PC almost each time I entered combat with pirates, mainly in deadspaces. At the very moment when pirates lock me with this peculiar beep sound.
I followed this thread and realized I had let the resFace.stuff old renamed old file in the same folder as Eve, so I moved it to another place. And I switched my ATI drivers from 5.13 Catalysts to the last 5.12 Omega for my Radeon 9800 pro. But I still had a few crashes (with no more auto-reboot as I switched off this feature with the admin tools in XP) then a blue screen.
I suspected it could also be related to sound, cause crashes almost always occured when you hear the beeps made by the pirates targetting you. As suggested on another thread, I decided to disable the hardware acceleration for the soundcard, cause I also had those annoying glitches and *****ling sounds when firing missiles and drones.
And it seems to work, finally! I still crosses fingers, but it seems your solution worked for me too. Just need say to the 5% people like me who still had this bug after trying Rantor's procedure to try disabling hardware acceleration for their soundcards. It also fixed the *****ling sounds :) Yet, once in a while, a missile can be fired silently, but that's not a big issue.
Best regards,
Eolynn.

Hm... seems like I've found a Dev's post connected to our problem. Dev's are playing with our faces now, so no wonder they have accidentially broken the face generation routine on some video cards.
This also explains why rollbacking the resFace.stuff file helps to temporary resolve video issues...

I am downloading your rolled back resFace now rantor fingers crossed.
But to everyone who reads this this is a 'fix' for the problem but in ccp's eyes its a 'rollback' not a 'fix' which would probly be why they have stayed quiet about it, please keep that in mind guys.
again gratz on finding this out rantor

This works, as everybody kinda knows but I just wanted to point out that you actually have to remove the old resFace.stuff file from the EVE directory. You cannot simply rename it and then copy in the down rev version.
If you don't remove the 3805 version and simply rename it to 3805.resFace.stuff ... Eve client will not start and say something like "I have issues :/"

Absolutely fantastic m8,
I have been freaking out for a few days without EvE and messed about and finally got it to work. I dont have the pictures of the characters but thats the least of my worries. Thats again m8 for helping me get back on.

Whoever suggested moving the copy of the file out of the eve folder, thank you! The strange startup error is now gone, and i can once again play, although loading portraits seems to take forever, I thank the original poster and the one who made the above suggestion wholeheartedly.

I have a VIA Unigraphics Pro IGP Graphics card on a laptop which i bought to play EVE on the road. Since the January 10th patch i have a lot of crashes. I will try this fix now.
Why gets established stuff always broken after a patch session...i don't know...can't your for instance test if the player on/off-status works before you release a patch?
My guess is that when Kali comes out, we can throw out our notebooks anyway and buy new machines.
Also that there is no official word yet from CCP is annoying. I have a 2nd account running on Linux which also has a few hiccups now and then after the January 10th patch.
I hope this will fix it too.

Nice to know you can all have your little faces again :)
Naturally I assume this does nothing to address the real blank screen crash issues that many have been experiencing since well into last year or even longer? ie. those that have been experiencing the same frequency of crashes before, during and after version 3796
ps. yes of course I have disabled my soundcard and ingame sound and my drivers are up to date, and no my processor and GPU are not overheating.. |

Definitely it does nothing to address the real cause of the problems we have with EVE. It's just a replacement of resFace.stuff file from 3805 back to 3796 version which happens to remove notebook user's problem that came to us after 10th of January.

Also, this fixes a related bug for new members (presumably since the January 10th patch) trying to create a character. If you have an ATi Mobility Radeon or one of the other affected graphics cards, and creating a character fails at the choose bloodline and gender screen then this fix is for you too.
Incidentally, I raised a support ticket about this 48 hours ago and haven't had anything but the automated response and an apology for the delay so far.

works for me too - i just started playing and wanted to try eve on my laptop (allthough system requirements say intel 855gme graphics are not supported) and it ran but often crashed and was stuck with a black screen, i thought oh well not supported i guess i can forget it
then i checked the forums, found this, tried it and it works excellent - 855gme might not be supported but it DOES work without any problems with this fix :D low fps sometimes but that doesn't matter, as long as i can play eve on the go :D

I had an issue after updating my graphics driver where the splash screen would come up, but the login screen never displayed. EVE application was running, but nothing on screen.
The new diver I'd loaded was the latest Omega drivers. Machine is a laptop with an ATI 9200 Mobility Radeon card.
To fix:
Downloaded and installed Dec 2005 DirectX 9 update, and .Net 2.2 runtime (1.1 was installed)
Don't know if both were required, or whether just DirectX was the problem, but this fixed the missing login screen.

Ok, I have ATI Radeon 9800 so I got the Omega drivers. I downloaded the old resFace.stuff file and swapped it with the current one. but i couldn't get past screen 2 of the character creation screen. i put the newest one back in and took the old version out, and everything works fine now. finally back in the game.
i also did all the steps in the sticky's to make things run smoother, turned the sound off, changed the height and width, and opened port 26000 on my firewall (mcafee AND windows).
all is well now, no lag, no problems so far (just starting tutorial though!)

Hi, just bought a new charactar and had him moved to my account. His portrait, his info, and his name are all visible and I can even post with him on forums (this is him) but when I click his portrait to log into the game, It will say "entering game as source" and than "failed" with a black screen.
Any help with this would be much appreciated. Also, if this is indeed the "black screen" issue stickied above, than disregard Smile
Thx!
p.s. Changed the resface.stuff and it still does the same thing. From reading the post, it sounds like the same problem but I'm not using a laptop.

Here's an interesting quandry:
This laptop is running ATI Radeon mobility 9000 IGP chipset...the fix worked, I log in fine, but if I try to undock, it locks the entire computer up to the point that only a hard shut-down works. Kinda hard on the system, having to cut the power everytime I try to play. I have the latest drivers, on a laptop running windows XP home(BAH!) with a centrino 2.0 ghz processor on 512 MB of pc2700 ram. Any suggestions? In all honesty, I could care less about undocking, this laptops only going to be in use until my hard drive gets in for my real laptop, then I'll have no troubles, but the damnedable tutorial reset itself due to a new install, and I can't make aura leave me alone...now I'm stuck outside the station in my rax, and cannot even log in to redock. All this from a SATA drive getting a BSOD "PAGEFILE_IN_NONPAGING_AREA" or something like that.
Any suggestions?

Because I updated my nvidia drivers to the one you get when you run windows update. Got a Geforce FX Go5650 on a DELL Latitude D800 laptop.
Feels like eve goes better now generally with these drivers. Should I change back and use omega drivers and this change?

First off, that file worked and fixed the black screen flash, but now I have a different problem. I'm trying to create a new character, and once I choose my gender/bloodline it will load the next step. But instead of actually moving on, the character select/news screen comes up with the gender/bloodline buttons over it. And when I try to select again or go back, the game locks up. Anyone else having this problem?

Does this fix the random black screen problem, or just the login/info problems?
EVE has been randomly crashing my graphics card ever since RMR. I can put up with having to do a hard reset every few hours, but I'm worried about what so many resets might be doing to my computer. My PSU died last week, and I'm suspicious that it was EVEs fault - it was less than a year old!

It's definitely worth trying. This fix seems to wipe out an awful lot of Radeon-related problems.
Ofc. since it's an unofficial fix, there are no guarantees of it being useful for anything. But the feedback alone shows how useful it is. ________________________________________________

I followed the directions on here and I did indeed get the flashing black screen problem fixed.
now the only problem for me seems to be that EVE will crash when I try and make a new character. I can click on "empty slot" I can selet which race I want, I can then select which bloodline I want.
After I do that, the loading bar comes up, finishes loading and I'm left staring at the bloodline selection screen overlaying the character selection screen with no way to advance forward or backwards unless I restart the game.
What seems to be the problem now?

Indeed. I am much hoping that someone knows what this problem is.
I had a 14-day free trial account just before RMR came out, and I decided that I liked the game enough to start paying it. I pay and start playing last night and I get that black screen problem. Now I get that fixed but I can't actually make a character that I want, and instead am stuck with my random character I made just to experiment with the game because I can't go two steps into the character creation process without the game crashing.
I'm assuming the reason no one has discovered this yet is that not many people are making new characters. Can someone who has done this "black flashing screen" fix attempt to make a new character and tell us if you have the problem or does anyone have any solutions?

Started my return to EVE 4 days ago. Here is my setup:
Sony VAIO 1.2GHZ Pentium M 1GB RAM Mobile Intel Express Graphics (915GM/GMS, 910GML) Realtek HD Audio
1. Could not get past character creation without a CTD. Updated video drivers and got past character creation, but suspect that I was just lucky (read on).
2. Immediately noticed that any 'Show Info' on ship, Agent, Player, or Corp generated CTD 100% of the time; in-game mouse cursor was flickering badly; updated audio drivers.
3. Could get through character creation about 20% of the time without CTD; 'Show Info' on Agent, Player, or Corp generated CTD about 75% of time; 'Show Info' on ship generated BSOD 100% of the time; flickering in-game mouse cursor fixed.
4. Applied Rantor's fix. All is well, no more problems.
Hope this helps other VAIO users. Way to go Rantor!

On Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller, it is the same. You are not alone Dozle Zabi. The pilot's thumbnail are regularly corrupted on download, and half time I am trying to download it cause CTD... =v= is unplayable like this...
Devs have fixed this whole problem in the upcoming Blood update/patch. It is very near, just wait a little bit and everything should be fine... again.

Athlon 64 on a MSI nForce board. PowerColor ATI 9600XT AGP card. Sweet card, when things work. I've been getting the freezeups too, at inopportune moments, especialy when i'm gallivanting around .3 systems, it aint pretty! Did Rantor's patch, didn't help, so i've been tinkering around with the DirectX settings and decided to take the troubleshooting slider to the left two notches: disable all cursor and advanced acceleration settings. I think i've hit the jackpot. Cursor looks like crap and keeps disappearing, but it's working solid so far. All GPU enhancement settings are set to balanced and default. Fastwrite is ON, Sideband addressing is ON.
I've had problems on UT2004 with similiar problems, save the VPU recovery feature actually resets the display 75% of the time. The rest of the time I have to hit the panic button.

Edited by: Glod Rocksmacker on 13/02/2006 10:47:06 Ik ALMOST works for me too (Toshiba laptop with ATI Xpress 200M).
But now the 3d graphics are crooked (sometimes my ship looks flat and it disappears and appears randomly behind other objetcs). I'm a newbie so are there any options I can change on the client side to improve this?

Hi tried this resFace.stuff myself, yes it does work but I'm totally bloody fed up with CCP saying that it is always OUR fault with graphics screw ups. My graphics card is BRAND NEW, plus my PC is BRAND NEW!! They need to pull their bloody finger out and test out everything before getting us to apply new patches.
Thanks mate for all your help. Lets hope CCP get their act together and soon!!!!

Glad I found this thread; I don't usually play from my laptop (Compaq v2000z AMD Turion/Radeon X200), maybe once a month or so... tonight is that one time. Black, flickering screen after logging in.
After copying the older resface.stuff, all is well.

Hi I hope this is the right area for this question but after sending the dxdiag file to the support team they told me the graphics card is not supported but i have been playing the game for days with a few problems. I have tried this patch but it does not work. It all started when i was playing and decided to do another mission, when the picture tried to come up i got the blue screen, ever since then it will not load at all past the first picture, it shows the picture before connecting then it goes. I have a desk top comp on the same connection and it plays fine so must be this laptop. If anyone can help please it would be good as i have to cancell if i can not play on this laptop. Least to say I am super cheesed off as i was starting to get hooked but then this happens, just thought it strange i could play 4 12 days or so b4 this problem and now nothing, Please help my addiction

Does anyone know whether CCP plans to fix this problem. I'm not really sure I'm computer savy enough to do this "fix". CCP has been of no help, though at least they did respond, essentially telling me to go do that fix. For now, I'm playing fine on my 2 year old laptop, but cannot play on my 2 month old brand new desktop. If I know they are planning a fix in an upcoming patch, I'll just wait.

Here are my settings for my Radeon 9600XT: The current Omega Drivers are used in this config.
Anti-Aliasing: Application preference Anisotropic filtering: Application Preference Texture Preference: Quality Mipmap Detail Level: High Quality Wait for Vertical Sync: Always On SmartShader: OFF Direct3D Compatibilty Settings: Support DXT Texture Formats: Enabled Alternate Pixel Center: Disabled AGP Bus Speed: 8x Fast Writes: On Sideband Adddressing: On VPU recover: On Reporting to ATI: Off Monitor Resolution: 1024X768 @ 32Bit. Rantor's Patch: Employed. The Audio is disabled in the game.
These settings have chopped my FPS down to 60, but stability has returned and gameplay has become enjoyable once agian.
My impression is that there is a conflict between DirectX and the game's software, maybe texturing since we see alot of artifacts in the stations.

This is ridiculous. This game looked cool, so I thought I'd do the 14 day trial before buying it. Good thing I did. Yesterday I was able to play fine, but today I can't go for 10 minutes without CTDing, BSODing, or just having my screen go black. Not entirely true, at one point I ran for a good 2 hours, but I haven't been able to since then.
I've tried: * Old Catalyst drivers (5.12) / New Catalyst drivers (6.02) * Replacing resFace.stuff with 3796 version * Disabling sound / updating audio drivers * Terminating all background applications * Cleaning all the dirt out of my case with compressed air * Cranking up my CPU fan (variable speed Volcano) * Running windowed / fullscreen * Running memtest86, no errors * Running surface scans on all harddrives, no errors * Flashing BIOS to newest version
Judging by the age of this game I'd say that this problem is not going away any time soon. Though, I will still hold out hope for a while, since the game does look pretty good.
System specs: Radeon 9500 Pro Athlon 2100+ 512MB RAM
Any suggestions?

There appear to be 3 different ways for eve to crash:
1 - BSOD ( linked to in game sound ) 2 - Black Screen of Death ( linked to gfx problems, happens more when there are more ships around, ex. gang of 9 in a lvl 4 angel extrav ) 3 - CTD or crash-to-desktop ( appears linked to network problems )
To fix #1, the BSOD on my machine, I had to turn off ingame sound. Once I did that, I havn't had one single BSOD. Alot of people have had this work for them to get rid of that aspect of crashing. Others have went out and bought new sound cards to replace their onboard sound to fix this. ( yes, this is like playing half a game, I dont like it anymore than you )
To fix #2, Black Screen of Death, alot of people replace the res.Facestuff file as shown in the 1st post. It doesn't work for me. But what seems to help me, but not get rid of the problem, is to ctrl-alt-dlt, right click eve.exe and set its priority to above normal. I still get the BlackSOD, but not as often.
To fix #3, CTD, other than making sure you aren't playing wirelessly, or at least playing wirelessly with very good signal strength, and making sure you have the correct network drivers installed, theres not a whole lot that can be done. You need a very good low latency network connection( getting broadband will help if its with a good ISP ), and even then, we still have the route to Tranquility to contend with. A traceroute for me reveals that as soon as I leave the USA and hit the 1st router in London on Level3.nets backbone, I have response times in the triple digits. Theres nothing we, as the user, can do about this.
This has been my experience so far to help deal with Eve stability.

I agree with the ways in which Eve crashes, but not with the solutions. Along with what I mentioned trying in my above post, today I tried the following the following: * Bought a new soundcard (Audigy 2) and disabled the onboard AC'97 in the BIOS * Reinstalled windows * Swapped power supplies with someone else * Ran a complete virus scan, which turned up negative
Since then I have already gotten a BSOD and a BlackSOD. In short, the only thing I haven't replaced or verified to be working perfectly is my graphics card, and I'll do that when possible. I've never had any kind of problem with it though.
Also, BlackSODs don't happen more often when there are more ships around for me. All three problems happen seemingly randomly, not associated with a specific event in the game. My internet connection is pretty good too: 5mbit/640kbit. My ping times hit triple digits when entering the Level3 network as well, but they are low 100s. A ping time of 140 should not be causing a game, especially an MMO, to crash. I've experienced lag in the game, but it doesn't seem to correlate to times of instability.
Setting Eve to have a higher process priority just seems to provide more lag, and not fix any crashing issues.
Is there actually anyone out there that can run this game without any kind of crash? If so, what kind of hardware do you have in your system? Is there anyone with a Radeon 9500 Pro that can run the game without crashing (not that you'd be reading this post if you could, but maybe you know someone)?

BSOD huh? What do they say? To me, BSOD usually leans to a hardware or driver level problem being the root cause.

Some are just blue with nothing on them, most are STOP codes that don't exist according to Microsoft, I've gotten a PFN_LIST_CORRUPT (STOP 0x4E) a couple of times. This computer is 2 years old and I've never seen a BSOD on it before I started playing Eve. Or a BlackSOD for that matter....
As far as hardware goes, I've either run exhaustive tests on, or swapped out, almost every piece of hardware in my system, save for the motherboard, CPU, and video card. Granted, my motherboard is a little crappy (a Gigabyte GA-7VAX), but I've never had problems with it before. If it was the CPU or video card, at the hardware level, you'd think I'd have seen other symptoms of them dying. Driver incompatibility maybe, but I've tried different video card and chipset drivers, to no avail. My bet is on the use of Stackless Python; it's not really the most 'tried and true' of langauges. I know CCP works with them a bit to improve the language, but it is still experimental.
That said, if I can find the conflict with my system, I'd still be happy to fix it.

Yah, I had a look at that before, but I've tried everything mentioned there, and none of it helped. The STOP 0x4E is only one of the piles of errors I have recieved though, which tells me that it's not the actual problem. It's just the one I bothered writing down.

The ram fix works decently by adjusting the buffer for me, but I still have a memory leak, its just much slower. I use a logitech g15 keyboard and can see when the RAM is filling up, I log out about 95% and then pop back in and I can run without crashes.
In addition .. .
I posted the ram sizes in another thread, but thought this might help the math challenged, or those who might not know the sizes of memory. I made this little list by only including 128 meg sticks, if you have other divisions, you can open a calculator to figure out your ram size based on the list.
RAM sizes and their divisions along with the value to use for buffersize:
128 megs: buffersize=64
256 megs: buffersize=128
384 megs: buffersize=192
512 megs: buffersize=256
640 megs: buffersize=320
768 megs: buffersize=384
896 megs: buffersize=448
1024 megs (1.00 GB): buffersize=512
2048 megs (2.00GB): buffersize=1024
hope this helps

I dont know what changed with the new patch. But before i was getting the black screen of death and Rantor's fix worked perfectly for me up until the new patch. After that i had to revert to the old resFace.stuff to patch and everything seemed to be working fine. Then after doing a mission with alot of rats in it i got a blue screen and my comp crashed.
Once i had gotten the new patch i tried replacing the resFace.stuff again, Now this worked and i could log back in and play just fine. But, im still getting that blue screen.
Does anyone know if this is related to the memory leak or is it just the same problem that existed before just coming back with the new patch? Or is this a whole new crashing problem?
Im using WinXP have security patch 2.0 1 gb DDR2 RAM ATI X600 256 mb gfx card Sound card that come with mother board which is an ASUS P5GD2 One 160 GB SATA HD
Am i missing anything?
Help would be much appreciated.

I've had both hard reboots (fixed by turning off the sound acceleration, my soundcard is the pitiful onboard one that came with my R-series 820G vaio desktop) and flashing black screens. I'm using a Radeon x700.
I was overjoyed to use the sound fix and finally be able to play the game without being hit by what became known amongst my friends as "the reboot missile" since it only happened during combat. So I spent much of last night enjoying my first real EVE experience.
Then just now, after the hour-long server maintenance, I log in and get the flashing black screen. It's as if my CRT were constantly changing resolutions: it makes clicking noises. There have been NO changes to my computer in this time. The error is inexplicable. But I'd seen it before. EVE had done that when I was trying to run it with dual monitors. Turning one off (graphics settings, not the power) fixed it, until now.
I've seen some weird bugs before but this unexpected, unfathomable change in performance ranks very high on the scale.

I have installed the driver at omegadrivers.net, AND replaced the file. I still get the black screen, which now "flashes" at me. It also seems slower. I'm using the ATI Radeon 9000/9100 built in graphics card. I'm not sure if I had renamed the wrong resface file by accident and am still using the regular one or not, but I'm switching it now.

I figured out my flashing problem. It's my monitor. It only did that when running EVE, for weeks, until I came home to see it happening at my windows login screen. So I switched to my small backup LCD, and have had no problems. Go figure.

I have no problems amd athlon 64 x2 4400+ 2gig ram radion x800 pci-e
ditch the audigy2 it and eve dont like each other. I have had better luck with the onboard ac'97 sound then the audigy 2

CCP, this is what happens to me on my otherwise rock solid work laptop. If you are actively trying to fix/debug this then let me know if I can provide any assistance. I'm willing to run any reporting utilities or debug stuff you could possibly have to track this one down. I'm using the latest intel drivers and 60% of the time it'll just bluescreen straight after clicking a character to log in.

This one has it right i have had the 1 problem for olmost a year now and i havent had any crashes in the time i disabeld my sound i wil get a new sond card soon but it works :P
