Can someone please explain the difference between shield boosters and shield rechargers? Does a booster increase your total shield strength as well as increase the recharge speed?
I currently have a large shield extender and a medium shield extender on my Caracal, and have noticed that it seems more experienced players seem to have boosters as opposed to extenders and/or rechargers. Should I ditch the extenders and grab a booster.
A n00b thanks you in advance! |

Sorry, a bit out of it now but I'll try to give your question an answer.
Rechargers effect the rate at which your shields recharge (it's usually a flat percentage, so lets say 5% faster). Boosters give you straight increases in shield hitpoints (back up to 100% shields) at the expense of some cap in using the mod.
Extenders just increase the total amount of shields you have. I'd ditch the extenders (they increase your sig radius I think, thus making you an easier target). Boosters are probably your best bet, with some shield hardeners to increase your resists in specific areas (if you have the mid slots available).
Hope that helps. ---------------------------------------------- Persona non grata |

Shield boosters "repair" or regenerate actively your shields on your ship.
Shield Extenders increase the maximum value of your shields.
Shield Rechargers increase your shields's natural recharge rate, somewhat like a booster, but passively.

I would use only shield boosters.. Like in a frig I would use T2 small shield booster.. And in the low slot pds (power diacnostic system), the pds gives your shield recharge rate, more shield, more cap, and the cap recharges faster..
I would use cap rechargers more than shield rechargers..

Edited by: Suhadi on 12/01/2006 10:38:47 An alternative passive tanking setup would be to fit an oversized extender (medium on a frigate, large on a cruiser) along with a shield flux and/or several power diagnostics. With moderate skills this should be able to get most frigate shield HP over 1000. Ofc, with the big increase in signature radius you'll be an easy target, so imo this is best used in a fast frigate against cruiser rats or larger, where your ship's speed will still evade turret tracking.
I'm sure a cruiser could be fitted for passive tanking too somehow, but I tend to fit a booster along with the extender to be sure. My Caracal is a pretty textbook setup, 1x Med booster, 2x Cap rechargers, 1x Large extender in the mids. -------------------------------------------------- - Suhadi |

Do NOT use a Shield Flux, EVER. The shield mod that goes into lowslots that you want to use are Shield Relays. Ofcource these come with their own downside (lower cap recharge) but with a correctly setup passive tank you won't need the cap.

I see your point but I don't entirely agree. On a ship with a small cap, like a frigate, you can still run into problems just running AB/MWD while firing guns for extended time so I would hesitate to recommend a Shield Relay to a newbie whose cap skills may not be that great anyway.
With the flux, yes shield hp is going to be a bit less, however ~1000-1100 shields on a frigate is still excessive and the slightly better recharge bonus on the flux makes up for the hp loss imo.
@ the OP, your best bet with this (and everything else) is to try it out and see what works for you. -------------------------------------------------- - Suhadi |
