This evening I will have most skills ready for what Ive read in the beginners guide to piracy thread that you need for pirating in a good way.
I have tried both the kestrel and the rifter out (vs NPCs). The rifter I used 150mm AC on and the kestrel rockets. The rifter seems better stats wise above all it has one more lowslot. But when using the kestrel I feel the damageoutput is much much higher. I think this is because the rockets hit every time, but the 150mm cannons hit about 60% of the time (or get crappy hits). I kill a NPC with kestrel in just seconds where with the rifter it might take 20sec. So its a BIG difference.
Why is this? Am I doing something wrong with the 150mm? Ive read alot on forum and AC seems to be what ppl recommend. I orbit at about 700m (but distance usually is between 300m-2000m). And I use EM ammo.
Will the cannons hit more on bigger targets? Like industrials? I was thinking maybe they dont hit so much because of the transversal velocity between the ships, and turrent trackin doesnt keep upp. So for slower freigthers this wouldnt be problem.
I will probably try them both out for piracy in real PvP. But for start I feel I need some guidence. Especially if theres something I simply to wrong with the rifter.
edit: (and abit off topic why is my character picture looking like this ?)

What sorta skills you got in gunnery? Also what npc's were you shooting at and what ammo were you using this all effects the damage.
Because you havent posted before on the forums it takes a day or two for you charc pic to appear.

your 150mm's have horrible tracking. You should:
a.) reduce speed to lower transversal b.) use tracking computers or enhancers. c.) use smaller guns. ----------------------------------------------

I only got the basic skills, as this char is only about a week old. Gunnery IV. small projectile turret III. The NPCs where fast moving frigates. Ammo: EM
a) you mean reduce speed on my own ship? (I naturally web the NPCs) b)If I use target computer I gotta scrap Stasis, Warp scrambler or MWD. So I dunno about that. But its a good idea to bad I aint got another med slot :/ c) Ye well ppl tend to recommend even 200mm AC and they are even bigger. I will try with smaller guns and see how the outcome is. But I figured if everyone else uses 150mm or 200mm with success then what am I doing wrong ;)
Answers are much appreciated.

The OP is using 150mm Autocannons, not railguns, so the tracking is fine.
Make sure you do not use MWD or AB while orbiting as this will mess with tracking.
Webbing the targets is also a great help, and I see that you are doing that already.

Maybe you're doing the mistake of running the MWD while orbitting? You did mention ending up orbitting at 3000m, which sounds like an MWD trajectory to me. Also, what is your Motion Prediction skill at?

First of all, congratulations on joining the dark side.
Second, I've flown a Rifter in combat. And even tho my gunnery skills are top notch I still miss a lot with both 150mm's and 200mm's. At least against other frigates, even webbed. However. Against anything bigger the hit ratio is great.
So if you are gonna fly a Rifter I'd suggest you mount 200mm's and go for the big juicy NPC'ing and mining cruisers. As long as they don't have a web and you shoot down the drones you'll be OK. Just remember to web the drones. Makes 'em so much easier to hit.

I dont actually have MWD yet soon though, I use a AB instead for now, just to get the feel for the setup.
Sometimes the AB is running when I get into range, I experimented some with it, didnt reach a conclusion yet though. Glad to hear you both confirm that it should be off. Still if I head towards enemy and he against me we will pass close about 50m and end upp far away from each other. Somehow webbing NPC seem to be pretty unefficient atleast angel-frigs that I "train" on. So I guess this wont happen vs Freighters and other slow targets.
And I dont have any gunnery skills except the ones listed above. This character is only about 1 week old. So I have to make priorities what to train. And Warp scrambler got priority over MWD and MWD over gunnery skills.
One of the guides also said "They key to not dieing while yo do it is speed.
Therefore it is alost essential for all new characters to train for a microwarp drive"
Im a bit curious about this. I get the idea that I will avoid more off victims shots. But in return if I use MWD my penalties with turrettracking will be as big as the opponents.
So what do YOU use MWD for really? Closing distance to activate warp scrambler? And to get out from tight situations? I reckon using it mid fight will screw upp his tracking as much as mine. Lets say I know that I will be in range to scramble and I most certainly will win, can I just scrap the MWD then? Use something else in that medslot?

I rarely use MWD on my Rifter, especially if going against NPC. I set orbit for 500m and web target as soon as I get within 10K, AB to target and turn off AB around 5K, coast up to the target and activate guns around 4K.
I'm not sure what resistances Angel NPC have so I can't say which would be the best ammo to use against them although that could be why you're not getting great damage on them.
I do take a bit of damage from the NPC, but I fit a small armour repairer, 200mm plate and Energized resistance in low slots so I don't worry about losing my shields. I use 3x 150mm Autocannons and small Nosferatu so I can keep my repairer running almost full time, if needs be.
Personally, I would recommend training up the miscellaneous gunnery skills such as Motion Prediction before learning MWD, but thats just me. I feel the gunnery skills would be more beneficial.

Log in to the game as soon as you can. I'll help you with the pirating basics, and try to get you in my corp. (The School of Hard Knocks helps new players to become good pirates. We have plenty of 'teachers', who are usually veteran pirates, who help teach all the newbs. We do training ops, ransom practicing, have in corp tourneys to boost our skills and ego, etc.)

Tbh this aint a new player its just someones alt, and your have an easier time shooting cruisers orbitting at 500m than you would shooting frigates that have 35 signature or less with a turret that has a 40 signature resolution, probably be easier to use some of your falloff.

so...where you planning on being a pirate at?
i just wanna...watch - it makes my pod spin and i can show you what pirates are like... dont go to the school of hard knocks - just stay on your own - or join the biggest pirates of them all - ISS
[disclaimer] Sapha is slightly crazy, he acctually just wants to blow you up. School of Hard Knocks is a good pirate school and ISS are not pirates. Furthermore Sapha is not a pirate nor does he like to run into them unexpectidly (<--cant spell), but respects their nessesity in the EvE universe. [/disclaimer]
*also train for T2 small projectiles - the skill that does falloff and surgical strike for a good minmatar frigate pilot start*
good luck

Zarithas, I myself am also looking to join the ranks of pirates here soon...do you mind if I contact you ingame to talk about joining you in training, and about joining the School of Hard Knocks?

Having a MWD just makes it alot easier to catch people.
The Rifter is fast enough to get away with using AB but being able to close in or run away at 2.5 km/s is great. Especially since copying Instas is painfully slow now.

Well at the end of the day I got two lessons.
A bantam goes down very quick to a rifter.
Secondly a rifter goes down very quick to a crow and a stabber.
Unfortunatley Hard Knocks didnt recruit atm. But my path is set.

As someone else mentioned go for 200mm autocannons, also there is really no need to orbit, just set your keep at range at 500, if its a cruiser and starts firing back orbit at 500m without mwd or ab on, missiles will not do much dmg and they wont be able to track you.
I dont really like the kestrel, the rifter goes alot faster, and if you keep an eye on transverse and range the dmg should be about the same. Plus, lets face it, the rifter looks way better.
Rifter should also warp fast enough to evade sentry fire on jump in, just make sure your instas work properly.
If you want to ransom someone be*****ily confident, even if you believe that they could easily kill you. My best advice for when your not sure if you can take something on is to convo the second you come out of warp, make a threat and demand some isk. That works about half the time, the other half you will sit at safe spot glaring at your ship half in flames or your pod.
