Probably more so unless you get some protection too. WarpDriveActive had a few nice offers.
--*--*--*--*--*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. They got Ray Charles. |

My guess would be like this: Continue to rise until Kali and about 6 months - 1 year after that, then 1-2 more years of steady population and then will start decreasing. In about 5 years TQ will prolly have 10-15k at peak hours (90% veterans). But in about 5 years we will probably beta-test Eve 2 or "some CCP MMO secret project" _______________________________________________

Except that eve is constantly evolving. They wouldn't be afraid to do a total code rewrite if they had to. They've done it in the past (though not before the game went live).

"Runescape will only last a few more years.". 5 years on, it's going strong. It has seen a steady increase in the number of players. Everquest 1 is still going, for what that's worth. Steady server population.
I wouldn't count eve out after 5 years.

That's true but CCP are doing a good job attracting new players too. You're probably right about the core remaining but 5 years is an incredibly conservative estimate and assumes that they just sit around and let the game take care of themselves. They don't, they try to actively keep the game interesting.
Besides, I want to pod my grandchildren.

Well eve is constently evolving and so we really have to define what is eve.
Is eve the current basic server and and client software? nah, you could scrap that in its enitrety and build a completly new engine, while still retaining exactly the same gameplay, just means you have to redo every single feature.
Is eve the current game mechanics? not realy, while if the current game mechanics were completely changed all at once, to say make it into ENB on the eve engine eve would have died, the mechanics and gameplay are steadiley evolving and may end up completely different to what we have now but still be eve.
Is eve the current persistence of the gameworld? By this I mean that something you did at any time since the start of eve, has the potential to effect you through the game machanics. Basically I consider eve, eve so long as we use our present characters and items without this rolling back or reseting.

eve has the most loyal playerbase of all the MMO's in existance. And that playerbase so far keeps on growing and growing. As long as ccp keep up the good work and regular updates, this game could go strong for years and years to come. As long as there is something new to discover, the game will continue to exist.

The devs did like 3 total code rewrites during beta, and have totally rewritten most of EVE's code in one way or another over the course of the past 3 years.

You really can't say. In one patch a MMO can go from low to a population boom (as EVE did), but the exact opposite can happen. And it can happen a lot quicker, too - after all, it's a hell of a lot easier to screw something up than it is to make it better. ___

EVE will last for another 3-4 years before CCP starts to make a financial loss on it, then I think they'll either start from scratch on it and create "EVE: The Real Second Genesis.
2010/2011 is when TQ will probably be closed, i hope not tho. :) *thinks about all the fuzzy times in EVE*

It's going to be around for a long time, especially when you consider that it is growing whereas most MMO's are declining in subscription numbers.
As for upgrading graphics ... ummmm .... sorry but this game has the best graphics IMO of any MMO out on the market today - don't need to fix something that isn't broken, because with most MMO's that I have played, graphic overhauls tend to make things much worse than better.
But this thread is kinda scary ... at least for people looking into the game. It kind of makes it look like the game is on the verge of dying or something!

if eve can survive the next 6 months it will most likely continue for many years.
If on the other hand ccp can't solve the lag issues it'll drop back down to a niche game with 3-4K subscribers.
Since that would happen after ccp makes a huge financial investment on new hardware that could bankrupt them if there subscriber base implodes like that.

You don't loose, 80.000 subscribers because of a little lag. And it's still a niche game, the niche is growing, but it's far from being a general public MMOG.

imho the main difference between the standard mmo out there and eve is the needed hardware ... many other games don't need such sophisticated servers than eve does ...
eve will be as long around there, as ccp can afford to maintain such a server ...
hopefully this will mean: many many years

Since EVE's content is based upon player interaction, I can see it still being interesting as long as only two players play. As more and more people join, there are more and more opportunities to have fun. The only issue I can see is the need for better and better hardware. Unlike other MMOs, EVE's need to log in all players into the same world means that the hardware must grow at the same rate as the players. Instead of enforcing an artificial limit on the number of players per shard, CCP must scale the hardware to match the game's popularity. Unfortunately, EVE's player count is approaching an exponential increase curve, which means CCP will have to increase their server power exponentially. Will we see them purchasing Itanium processors in a year or two?

The word niche is such a cliche. Everything is a niche, since it is based around a subjective subject. IE, what is niche to you isn't niche to me. What is niche to me isn't niche to you. We can share the same niche. I think English majors wanted to sound smart when this word was adopted into the dictionary. The only solid definition this word has is the ***** in the rock definition which the ecology definition is based on. However, niche is an illogical word since everything is a niche as long as one person finds it fun.

Edited by: Mira deVorsha on 16/01/2006 16:34:49 Its an easy answer.
For as long as it generates good revenue. Easy to answer because just look at other MMORPG.
Ultima online - Still going strong. Asherons Call 2 - Closed up shop just recently.
Funny enough Customers does not equate to revenue. For example if you have too many customers then it puts a hit on your hardware/software guys to ensure everything is working and kept up to date.
Where as a low population means less to do.
A happy middle is what keeps you alive.
