Just curious if anyone has plans to try to get Eve running on the PS3 when it comes out.

It's possible it would just be a pain the butt to do. PS3 is going to run linux, linux can run wine, wine can run eve. Got it?

I didn't ask if CCP was going to put it on the PS3, I am quite sure they won't, and since them doing it is the only way it would go mainstream I don't think you need to be worried. I was just asking if anyone was going to try, mostly for the technical challenge of it.

Uhm. Since when have people put any PC games on the X-Box / PS2 or whatever. I doubt the PS3 would even run it anyway, as it requires direct X 8 or higher, and the PS3 doesnt have a graphics card as such The day any MMO comes out onto a console is the day I load up my backpack with molotovs and go to Sony / Microsoft HQ.

They've already ported some computer games to the old X-Box

FFXI exists on both PS2 and PC, and are about to be released on 360 :p

Quote: if eve ever gets ported to the mainstream
Sorry to have to break this one to you, but Eve is pretty damn mainstream, whatever the hell that actually is. Something like "Frontier Elite" was a cult title, not this.
Eve running on the PS3 is highly improbable - afaik there are no plans to make a unix client available and so if a console version were made available, it would most likely be on an X-Box platform - after all, the basics are all already there, whereas a PSX version would involve rewriting a hell of a lot more code with little return. Ask Valve Software about that one!
To be honest, given that this game is mouse-oriented, I can't see a console port happening, let alone working well. a MMOG version of something like Rogue Squadron would work on a console, but not Eve*
*As I typed this, I thought: what a wonderful idea: get the console freaks to be flying fighters whilst the PC players control economic/production/battleship and so on - it's like some bizarre but amazing marriage of the two fields...

Thats not a proper MMO. I mean a good mmo (Eve, Everquest, Planetside, SWG) Something better than multiplayer final fantasy 10. It really is crap, you have to admit.

There are plans for a linux client on PS3. They also will have keyboard/mouse availability for the PS3.

It was hugely popular too
I think only maybe once or twice I've seen the keyboard and mouse for the PSX, whereas there's practically one of those consoles in every home in this country - that means that there's maybe one keyboard/mouse for every 20,000 playstations, probably less....
I doubt that Eve would be the "killer app" that would have console players rushing out to use their console like a cut-down PC. At ú300 (the usual RRP of consoles) you could buy a complete PC that'd run Eve, so I seriously doubt anyone would pay for the console and the keyboard and mouse on top - which doubtless sony would charge a hefty premium for. YOu'd also have to pay the extortionate rates for console software, whilst PC contemporaries get it for nothing.
No, Eve won't work on consoles I'm afraid - even 'net reliant ones like this. It's the wrong game for that market, really. There's very little "instant gratification".
I would however be interested in getting a hold of the dev versions of the unix based client however... technically, if this exists it could be run on the PS2.

To cut a long story short, I find the idea of Eve on a console pretty damn funny.
It just wouldn't work right, it'd be plagued from the start and I dread to think what'd happen when bugs - something that will ALWAYS happen in a continually evolving universe - rear their ugly head.
As the saying goes, show me the money!

Last time I checked, FFXI meant Final Fantasy 11 and that is a proper MMO with a total of over 1.5 million subscribers. I'm not saying if it's good or bad though :p

I kinda think everyone is missing the point. I don't care if CCP puts out a PS3 release of Eve...that's not even what this thread is about. I was just wondering if anyone was going to try to get it to run on the PS3; mostly for the technical challenge of it. Would it run perfectly? I sincerely doubt it. Would it run at all? It's possible.

If the PS3 ships with a variant of linux, and if a Virtual Machine app is provided for that architecture (i.e. it runs on Cell), then you could concieveably use the WM to emulate Windows (essentially, the VM acts like an entire x86 machine, fooling Windows into thinking it is running on it's own box), then yes, you could run Eve on a PS3.
BUT, if you try and run Eve at, say, full; HD (1920x1080, or 1920x1200 if you don't want any vertical compression), then it's likely to stutter quite a bit. Even if the Cell is as powerful as it's demonstrations would imply, it would still struggle to keep up.
So, you COULD run Eve on a PS3, but it would run in a relatively low resolution, and would almost certainly have horrible lag due to all network traffic passing through 2 layers on abstraction.

It COULD work. I know that YEllow Dog Linux can be run in the PS3. and I also know that it does support a keyboard and mouse. And with eve having a linux client, you could make it run. I can't wait to try it out. I there was an article about getting yellow dog running in the Linux Users and Developers magazine. Life in the Great Unknown is what YOU make it. |

Does this mean you are going to try it? Let me know how everything works out if you do, I might give it a shot too.

I am actually in the process of attempting this with my ps3.
The main thing that concerns me is if the eve client will work nicely with a soft open GL. Not going to know until I finish setting it all up.

If the cell indeed /can/ handle Software OpenGL well enough for EvE, then we could be in for a fun ride.
Could probably try using mesa, right?
P.S. Some interesting stuff here as well.

Dont think there would be much of a challenge in this now that CCP has release the linux port. Original thread is from 2006 if you didn't notice btw.

CCP never released a linux port. There is no linux port of EvE, there is only a windows client.
All that CCP released is a wrapper, which was available to people who had cedega/wine ages ago. What changed is, that they decided to officially support the wrapper.
Also, if you are so smart, I'd love to see you run EvE on a PS3, in which the hypervisor restricts access to the graphics card, meaning no 3D acceleration, not to mention that the CPU architecture is different.

This is the main problem.
You can install linux on a PS3 just fine (did it, but removed it again cos it was pretty useless) and run wine on top of that, but no hardware acceleration = meh.

Yes, I know its only a wrapper. I would love to see a native version as well.
I don't actually own a PS3 so I can't try :(
It just didn't look like much of a leap after getting linux running to get eve running. I would love to see EVE on more platforms and wish anyone attempting to bring it to more platforms luck. If it runs well(as in better than my PC) i may have to purchase one.
