For me it helped shape my career direction.
In college my goal was to do fine art, that's what I was studying.. during this time I played EvE a lot! EvE's awesome API & dev community/resources gave me the push I needed to get involved in web technologies, eg) a lottery tracker, corp forums with the api etc; It linked learning with fun for me.
Anyway's, because of EvE I didn't turn up to university on my first day for an art degree and dropped out to play EvE & make stuff lol. Then about 3 months later I enrolled on a foundation degree which took me into a full degree in Web Development. Now, one year after graduation I'm in a comfortable well paid Web Development job and loving it! :)
If it wasn't for EvE, who knows where I would be with my art degree.. or the friends I would have..
What's your story? .. |

Well, In guess then they gotto thank EVE for not having to put up with you?
Thanks to EVE I just skip all the other MMO's, saved me a nice bit of money. Yay! Stupidity should be a bannable offense.

Well I know what I am doing next time I am in Stockholm... Cheers Chribba! Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person." |

EVE has helped me realize that all life is interconnected. I mean really.
I once had a good part-time job that I liked very much and that i would work at a few times a week after getting off from my full time job. I had a good boos till he retired and this guy named Charles C. Pruitt took over and decided to streamline the operation. The FIRST thing chuck did was reduce my hours. So I quit.
That night I went home and realized that CCP had nerfed the hell out of one of my favorite ships. Then it hit me, the new Bosses instals where also "CCP" and the FIRST thing he did was nerf my job right out from under me.
Moral of the story is that anything named CCP is going to screw you |

This game is the advanced version of something I tried to do in the late 90s using Java and RPC. It was mainly an academic endeavor.
So we had bad spaceships in wireframe zipping about and the one "NPC" was a big borg cube that said "resistance is futile" on the "radio channels" and kept killing everybody with missiles for which there were no models.
The frame rate on a 586 was around 6 FPS and the communications and update structure for the models was so bad it would make you cry.
So in 2006 when I started playing, I got renewed interest in graphics and programming because of this game. I had prior to that moved to electronics since the late 90s after getting burned out preventing Y2K disasters on big boring corporate mainframes.
Because of this, OpenGL. Because of that C++.
That knowledge got me the job I took on in 2007, 3000 miles from where I started, that I still have today. |

At the end of 2008 I joined EvE to find some better PVP. PvPers tend to need a lot of ISK and so I went to the most obvious ISK related section: Market Discussion.
I couldn't understand a single word, of all that jargon, I barely knew what a bank account is. No study about finance at all as well.
Then with much trial and error I started getting the first concepts and not too much time later I became an auditor and 3rd party service. Then one day I got shown Block Ukx website and exchange (BSAC), which totally resembled a real corporation with real documents, listings and whatsnot. That stuff fascinated me enough to push me studying real finance. I became also an EvE trader.
Meanwhile in RL my country dug deep in recession and I, like many others, lost my job, for years.
At this point EvE took over RL: I started trading in RL and applying the very same concepts I learned in game. It worked and I could live in RL thanks to having learned concepts in EvE!
At a certain point RL trading took over EvE's as well: I started applying advanced finance I learned in RL to my EvE play and it worked too!
I even created a free software to turn EvE markets data into real trading platform candle stick charts (and at the subsequent Fanfest the charts were shown like mine).
Even more, one day I was explaining my EvE-acquired methods in a RL finance forum when a guy who dabbles in finance sent me a PM and offered me a job.
So I got a real job because I posted some of what I learned in EvE! And the same guy who used to not know anything beyond a bank account, is now consulted in RL by a circle of people for their investments! Auditing | Collateral holding and insurance | Consulting | PLEX for Good Charity

What has EVE taught me?
Well after a while at my RL job I'm now trusted with a few responsibilities around the office.
I have access to the stock room, the key cabinet and I know where the petty cash tin is kept.
One of these days I might have to "work late", load up the office pool car with all my new post-its, paperclips and ball point pens and have me a -ú500 spending spree before driving into the sunset!
It's gonna be epic.

So this guy who brought me into Eve-he plays an unhealthy lot of MMOs, but only played Eve for maybe a year, then he left and I somehow stayed.
He is constantly trying to get me into the latest MMOs he is playing, currently it's some weird kung fu stuff, Age of Wu Lin or something like that.
Every time he tells me about this game (and he does this far too often imho, but being a good friend, I usually try to at least appear superficially interested), he complains about how dastardly, evil and malicious their enemy guild (or is it school, sect? dunno...) is.
And each time I reply that I find their creative exploits and griefing admirable and genuinely inspiring. So several days ago he yelled at me that Eve had turned me into a complete @rsehole and he was no longer interested in ever playing an MMO with me, unless to fight me and every single person I would ever ally with in game.
Thank you, Eve. Just think of how bad an average post by me is, and then realize half of them are even worse |

Since I played Eve since I was 12 years old (10 years), I can't point to one specific thing the game has not influenced. I can say however that the biggest two things were these:
1. Dedication. I never would have gone to college or authored and self-published my first book without Eve's influence in this. I had to learn how to pick myself up after losing shiny ships :(
2. Guts. Closely related to 1, but this means I can stand up to things I find wrong. I used to be a wimpy weakling who begged for his life over local chat, or bigger kids would intimidate in the schoolyard. Now, coupled with some martial arts training, I am a confident human being in both body and mind.
Still no girlfriend though. I like to lick things.

Long nights of pew pew (or waiting for pew pew to happen) mean I am still astonished I managed to graduate from uni in the end.
Taught myself some excel to do industry, put excel on CV. Went to an interview for first job after uni and was asked to elaborate on my claimed excel skills. I said "I do industry in EVE online", the interviewer said "ahhhh, I see" and I got the job (note that this was a games company. Would probably not have pulled that one at a different type of job)
Made a few friends I am still close with, many many years later.
And of course moved to Iceland. No tales of love and babies here but I doubt I would have had this experience without EVE. -- CCP Shiny --

If I hadn't played Eve quite so much I would probably have had alot more sex with my wife, which in turn may have resulted in more children and more expense. Sadly I got bored of Eve a while ago, baby number 3 arrived shortly after I stopped playing and baby number 4 is now on the way so i think my logic is correct. I still am not playing Eve as it doesn't seem to have anything in it right now to draw me back... I occasionally reply to inane threads about blah blah blah such as this one, other than that Im playing skill queue online and waiting to see if Eve evolves into a game I want to be actually involved in again anytime... Luckily I have vast reserves of easily made isk to keep plexing for now, god knows I wouldnt pay actual cash to play... Trust me, I almost know what I'm doing. |

I only approach traffic lights that are green. If i see a red light ahead I immediately pull a U-turn. I've become more and more dishonest with my friends and family. I begged a friend for $20 and promised him I'd give him $40 in return... He gave it to me and to this day we haven't talked since and I've avoided his hateful, vulgar but kind of hilarious texts...
I've had 14 jobs in the last 3 months... only because after a while nobody would show up. They promised me it would be fun and active.. but when I was the only one to clock in for 2 weeks I walked out.

I started eve as a university student when a friend brought me into it. At the time i was planning on going into an anthropological / archaeological route into academic oblivion.
I decided early in my eve life that the most satisfying thing for me was industry. For as a numerical exercise i enjoyed the market pvp and seeing the angles. Through this it led me to knowing enough about markets to blag a job at ABN AMRO working investment and my knowledge i learnt cutting my teeth on eves market came into its own.
Getting out before the financial crash (i worked in risk and was the only person in the department who saw it coming) my life fluttered for a few years. And somehow i found myself as an army officer. But eve was still a staple and was still learning more and more about markets and started developing my analytical abilities to refine predictions and speculations.
In early 2010 a friend who'd worked for a local investment bank had the idea of launching her own financial services company and wanted me to join in as she knew of my analytical and investment skills. I said what the hell and joined in. 3 and a bit years later we've gone from 7 people working pro bono in a tiny office to nearly 450 with offices around the world.
So thank you CCP for bringing out my inner talents.

I was a corp CEO a couple of years back. One of my corp mates asked if anyone would like to do some web development. We started and worked for a year, then merged with regional industry leader. The merge lasted for about two years. I just quit that job (after some "creative differences") to try and start my own business.
During my work for the last two years I had to move to another city in which I had never lived before. When I moved in, the only 3 people I knew in that city were from EVE.
So, if it wasn't for EVE, the last 3 years of my life would look immensely different.
Oh, and one more thing. Alliance forum discussions and TS/Vent comms helped me with my English. I was (in)famous in my last company for writing lengthy, detailed project documentation and status reports. It turns out CCP's devblogs have a perfect format for progress reports CCP Ytterbium: Yarrblblbgrlblbgrlblblblbblbgrlblblbgrblblyarrrrdrooooooolonthekeyboardlikealunatic |

9 Years so far, officially being an outlet while in the military and deploying, also a vent for when creativity struck. EVE taught me how unkind people can be, how there are some things you just don't 'wing it' on, that people will shape you how they desire over what you desire in a heartbeat. When I arrived in the ranks of the meat grinder, it was a little easier than most.
In a lot of ways, I had nothing for a life then, Uncle Sam kinda takes that away in the active duty army infantry, unless you're the get wasted type and quite the *****, lol.
EVE was hope in a world where there hasn't been a lot of.
For those who know me for my RP style, it mimics a dark and edgy approach with a cold sense of justice, mirrored within lore that doesn't boast sugar-coated lore. It just... feels a lot more real than most other games out there that don't take darker side of story seriously.
In a way, the darker blade-runner aura that is EVE is the closest thing out there I can relate to for an escape.
Now, I've survived the Army, the Infantry, a combat deployment, a national guard contract after, and am finally allowed to be myself despite all the heartache and crushed creativity. What has survived dwells in amongst the stars where no man can reach.
Now, I'm in Full Sail Univ. -studying Game Art and soon Game Design, working with a color palette typically a little grimmer than most but seriously going places.
Who knows, one day, I might be able to come work for CCP and return the favor...

It depends how intense you play and what your RL looks like in general.
From my pov I never played such a deep game. Since EVE I dropped all other games. I am now nearly 8 years ingame and it takes a huge amount of RL time you'll might spend better on more important things. Because finally there's not a real value your can use for RL. It's like living in a sub-culture at night. It might become a second (parallel) life.
I improved my english and met a lot of interesting voices on TS. But these guys are not really friends. Overall I am pretty sure that this game is for the most players very unhealthy. I know so many people playing EVE till 2-4am EVERY day. So did I for many years. I feel actually the results of sleep deprivation and other side effects.
I met some guys who are very lonely in RL and therefore taking this game extremely serious. They are trapped ingame looking for something they can't have in their RL.
Face the reality. When you are young and you have the luxury of a lot of sparetime without caring too much about money it's not a desaster to waste some fun years in EVE. If you have a RL profession, wife and kids you just might have a schedule at EVEning. When you play everyday after work till late night it will end bad because you should ask yourself if this is a good life for your family. When you start to play after family went to bed you end up in less sleep what will affect work and family life. When you play just time by time you can't really get into PvP very well (if you are new in EVE). Playing EVE just one time a week or for one hour a day makes no sense. Then you better switch to PS3 Arcade style for some distraction and fun.
I just will say: overall the game has no benefit for your life. That's my pov. |
