The problem with auto-attack is that it requires the server to constantly check if something is nearby that the mines can attack. This contributes to server lag. In a single player game it wouldn't be a problem at all, but in a multiplayer game where a SMALL gang of ten ships can lay 100 mines, each of them demanding to know if there's an enemy nearby to attack... you can see how things can get bad very quickly.
If you require a player order to attack or require a different player to manually trigger the mines, it makes everything a lot easier. It's not realistic, but it's the only option that reduces stress on the server. Keep in mind that even the way they are now, drones can cause a massive decrease in server performance. Have you ever seen what happens when a blob of supercarriers and carriers deploy all their fighters? 200+ drones all doing their own thing. The server nearly has a heart attack and goes right into TiDi. Ch+½j+ì Katrina Oniseki ~ (RDC) Chief Operations Officer ~ [I-RED] Sub-Director of Public Relations |

yer was in shadow cartel before this spin off wh corp. :) so seen my fair share of OMG i cant do anything fights. would't limiting how many mines in system hep towards this problem? i do like the idea of suicide drones tho :) they would have to do quite a bit of damage tho to make them balance the fact your losing them every time u use them weather you attack somone or not. |

I was being generous with 10 mines. You'll probably only get 5. If you're worried about wasting them, you should be asking them to be inexpensive. Damage balance is a whole different ballpark which I won't get into. Ch+½j+ì Katrina Oniseki ~ (RDC) Chief Operations Officer ~ [I-RED] Sub-Director of Public Relations |

I imagine it boils down to lag. CCP has problems with people deploying massive cargo container fields to decloak covert ops ships. I'm pretty sure mines would produce the same soul-crushing lag, and therefore would be a bad idea in the long run.
Love the idea of them being like little drone bombs though! Post with your main, like a BOSS! |

We already have suicide drones, they are called missiles. To carve a successful niche for yourself in EVE you need to be able to out sell, out produce, out fight,-á out run, or out wit your competitors. If you can do none of the above, your only option is to complain on the forums that somehow you are at a disadvantage using the exact same tool set-áas the rest of the player base. |

Lord LazyGhost wrote:Why was the mines taken out of the game? i thik it woud be rather kewl to be able to set up minefields. yes yes i understand the problem this will casue with gate camps. but you could limit how many can be places with in x distance of a object. could be funz :) I would love to see them brought back. They need to work correctly though. It would be ideal if they were given a 90 day space timer so people could set up mined entrances to private gates... kind of like in Freelancer when you wanted to go from the New York system to Alaska through that wormhole and you had to know the route through the minefield or you'd get blowed up.

Anyone seriously proposing their return in any form is completely delusional they can be reintroduced in the form of unique objects like a bubble is, i wait minefield since i started EvE in 2004, with the introduction in Rubicon of Objects not within the POS code give me great hope that we will see in a nbear future expansion "Minefield bubble" or "minefield core" or whatever will be the name
Will be by the same occasion great opportunity to create 2 new ship class / minelayer - minesweeper + eventually give new spice to sov warfare |

The original drones were mines that were stationary+dumb, that were eventually iterated to mines that moved closer to their targets, and then eventually iterated to drones. Essentially mines are an out-moded and outdated form of technology, the only place we "really do see" them are on some dead space complexes(so they are implemented for real-sy already).
Essentially the basic lore for drones in the world, means that mines are old technology. Lets be honest cloaking tech is really expensive(for something so disposable), and in space you really don't surprise anyone. Even something completely dead blocks/reflects starlight so it's detectable AU's away. Adding even a small amount of electronics means you're now putting out heat which makes it even more detectable.
The modern military isn't going to use outdated tech that even civilian ships have countermeasures for. Capsuleers aren't going to use something the military finds underpowered. The only people that make use of it are pirates that are in dead space, since you control where people go via gates(once again spaces the military doesn't really use, and that CCP hasn't given to us to use/make). |

Pretty much the same way I feel about minefields in EVE. A minefields primary job is to constrain, funnel, and direct opposing forces. With the type of movement and force projection EVE has, a minefield really won't do any of those. Don't worry miners, I'm here to help!

If we cant have mines perhaps we can have remote charges that can be detonated by someone on grid, a cloaked ship and remote charges would be awesome. Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction... |

About the only real use I could see for proximity mines is if they took up drone hold and bandwidth, and de-activated like drones do if you left grid.
Since they're pretty much drones anyway. Could be a useful way to protect your logi from being tackled, or some such. That wouldn't cause much lag, which I believe was the primary issue with their being removed in the first place. I could be remembering entirely wrong, it's been YEARS.
