Not all ships are great PvP ships, but they're all fairly useful.
Look at the Scorpion. At first glance, you would think this is a horrible battleship, 4 turrets, only 4 low slots, weak armor and structure. However this is probably the best PvP ship in the game, no ship is as powerful as the Scorpion in PvP.
It's not too hard to see why, 8 medium slots lets you setup a Scorpion in many ways to completely lock down another enemy battleship, no other ship can run 3 shield hardeners, sensor boosters, a MWD, warpjammers, webifiers, shield booster, or many other ECM modules at once.. Scorpion doesn't dish out as much damage, but it takes a LOT of damage with it's superior shielding.
Compare the Raven to the Scorpion, they're actually pretty simular. However the Scorpions slot arrangement is superior and the Raven depend on missles for its offense, highly expensive, and very ineffective. Raven simply isn't worth it, it's slightly improved firepower doesn't justify the loss of those two medium slots.
Look at the much vaunted Armageddon. I hate to tell you folks but the Armageddon is a huge peice of crap, atleast for PvP. Unless you want a good battleship for mining, forget about the Armageddon. 3 medium slots is a joke. I have downed so many idiots in Armgeddons who think their 8 heatsinks and lasers are going to smoke me it's not even funny.
Other day I took out an Armgeddon with my Scorpion one on one with 80% of my shields left. I did not use a shield booster, just a EM and Thermal hardener. The Apocolypse is so much more powerful than the Armageddon, while the Apocolypse is not a GREAT PvP, it sure as hell is a BETTER PvP ship than the Armageddon.
The Dominix is a very good ship, a good PvP ship. The Megathron is better though. The Dominix's powercore is very low, you won't be able to run many big guns on it. The Megathron easily outguns it, but that one extra medium slot on the Dominix might swing a battle in the favor of the Dominix. Megathrons tracking bonus is better than the Dominix's drone capacity bonus, which IMO is useless since the Dominix holds tons of drones anyways.
Typhoon/Tempest I won't comment on because honestly I've seen a total of two Tempests in this game, and I've honestly never seen a Typhoon in game. :)
Overall some ships are better at some things than others. Hell, properly equiped Blackbird can take a battleship out, if it wanted to, so obviously the Scorpion, which is a Blackbird on steroids is something to fear, however when you face larger fleets, ECM loses some of it's value.
Big gun ships are far from useless, they simply need to watch out for ECM ships and need to be used in fleet actions, where they are invaluable.
Maybe the scorp is too powerfull.. I believe it can take 2 arma out without troubles.
Anyway, they all serve there purpose... Dont know mimatar yet, but one day i will. Arma is nice for mining, but also for npc killing. The lack of midslots make it crippled for PvP fighting, unless you got some scorpions cripling the target.
Apoc is really hard to fit out properly if you dont got your cpu boosting skills maxed out, which makes it an elite fighter only for maxed out characters. I still have 23 hours to go till i can fit my second tachyon on it.
I do love the sound of 1 extra lowslot, and 50 extra cpu, but if i can be honnest i rather had just 1 extra midslot.
The dominix is second best PvP ship there is IMHO, since that extra midslot can fit 1 extra sensordampner or EW equipment. Therefor it will be much powerfull. Remember, outgunning someone doesnt mather much if you miss your target 99% of the time. But i gues your the expert in that.
