I was wondering what effect it has to shoot with a large gun at a ship with a small signature radius.
Does the sig-radius decide whether i hit/completely miss, or does it decide what kind of hit i make WHEN i hit(meaning "lightly hits"/"excellent hit" etc)
So if i fit and use a Target Painter, will i hit more often, or will i deal more damage when i happen to hit?

Chance to hit = Tracking chance modifier (seperate, see the Tracking Guide) * Signature Radius Modifier
Signature Radius Modifier = sqrt(your gun's sig radius / enemy ship sig radius)
So a large gun shooting a frigate would have about 5 times worse chance to hit than it would shooting a battleship moving at the same speed.
It also will get worse hits, but that's part of the rest of the formula.
A target painter will let your missiles get better hits on smaller ships and make your guns hit more often for better damage. -- Proud member of the [23].

Yes. If your sig radius is 25 times larger, generally, you will be hit overall sqrt(25) = 5 times better. That includes both a better chance to hit and better quality hits.
However, there is a ceiling on this. After a point, you can't hit any better, nor can you hit more often (100% of the time obviously is a max!) For example, if you target paint a battleship with 400 sig radius, and your guns have 30 sig radius, it won't help you at all. But if you target paint a frigate with 30 sig radius, and your guns have 400 sig radius, it'll help loads. -- Proud member of the [23].
