Edited by: Jerthron on 26/01/2006 18:33:35 Being a relative newb to the game (less than 2 months in), I figured I'd toss in some views after reading this thread. A lot of it will seem like common sense, re-iterating general concepts but there's a point to this post, overall :) I personally would break the eve players into just two groups.
There are a lot of people who do play eve for the PVE/mining/trading aspect of it. To them, this is a graphical Tradewars 2002 where they can just amass money, ships and try out the toys against rats. I know a number of players in the game who do this. They have no interest in playing against another player whatsoever. It's like playing games like Quake or Tribes or Starcraft, some people play against the PC and never play deathmatch! (i'm one of em). They don't need to prove they are better at a game than someone else, or to face the challenge of seeing if they are. They're playing against the built in npc portion.
Then again, there are the Pirates, and the Anti-pirates. Both are really one in the same, when you get down to it. Players who enjoy PVP. One group likes to prey on anyone, the other group likes to prey on the predators. The reasoning (morals?) might be different, but the general idea is the same. The challenge of fighting against other players who can think (hopefully), vs. the mindless drudgery of mining/trading, or the sometimes challenging but not-quite-the-same PVE fighting.
Generally speaking, i think most players can be divided into these two groups, with different levels in each. Many newer players will start off in group A to get skills, ISK and items that allow them to move into B.
Now, EVE makes it pretty easy to keep these two groups apart, carebear space and below. I know many people who are happy doing the group A part of the game, and know better than to go below .5 space.
I do agree that anyone going below .5 space is asking to get tanked, newb or not. Second time i went into low sec i got podded, and it was a learning experience for me. I stayed the hell out until i was somewhat able to defend myself, and more experienced with the game (check local, instas, stabs, etc).
going into lowsec if your a newb is like walking through the ghetto wearing a $12000 suit and a diamond ring on each finger. Your asking to get the beats :P
Now, after a low-sec pirate experience, most players will shape up and move out, or keep getting killed. Hopefully the former. Carebear space exists for those who don't want to play PVP, and i'm glad its there because not everyone is into that.
But i have trouble seeing the "I'm just doing it to teach them a lesson" view, since if you REALLY wanted to teach a newb a lesson you'd try to warn em out first. Your really podding em for the fun of exercising power over another player. The lesson they learn is just a byproduct.
If you leave your car unlocked in a bad neighborhood and it gets robbed, is the robber just doing it to teach you a lesson? Nope, he's doing it for the rush, the money, the fun or just cuz he can :) Had the guy who podded me given me the option of getting out with a "dont come back here" warning, webbed me in space and maybe ransomed my cargo, i would have given the cargo and left and stayed out and been a bit happier about being alive!
But hey, better on EVE than real life, right? :P
