Guild Wars: The Eve Project!
After a recent rant in the general discussion forum about how good Guild Wars was, I got to thinking about how much I enjoyed it. The only problem was...there were no decent players around to play it with.
What im thinking of doing, is forming a new Guild Wars guild, and playing it fairly seriously; not at the expense of Eve, but with the intention of certainly playing enough to enter the competition ladders and have a go at the World Championships next season. I used to play Guild Wars in a top PvP guild, but we eventually disbanded due to lack of playtime from the members.
Eve players, in general, have the right attitude for playing something like Guildwars, and I think it would be interesting to see how a guild full of Eve players gets on. So here's the criteria:
- Must have played at least some Guild Wars, preferably with PvP experience. You must be confident in yoru abilities to become a strong PvP player.
- Must have knowledge of team build, team strategy style gaming (knowledge of games such as CCGs is helpful here), though not neccessarily specifically with GW.
- Must have excellent voice communications skills (teamspeak) and a solid understanding of how to work as a team member.
- Must be prepared to put some time in for guild matches, and practice, particularly at the start of the project. The guild will be European timezone based, but anyone who can play on European (GMT) times is welcome to apply.
That's pretty much it, really. As I see it, this game is there for the taking, and given the right players, a serious shot at the $100,000 cash prizes is very feasible.
Will be looking for a minimum of 8 players for guild competition play, preferably a few more up to about 12, depending on how this goes.

I have Guild Wars Collectors Edition, but never played it much, cause the problem in Guild Wars is that if u dont have a guild, u mainly are playing a Single Player game. I might consider getting back to the game and help u guys with the project :)
I play necro/mesmer, its my favourite combination.

I got it for Xmas and has it finished within a week then got bored. Found the same thing - if you don't have many people in the guild or not many people to play with it becomes depressingly dull, and idiots generally make a hash of FoW or Underworld.
Something like this would be quite cool perhaps. I have a Warrior/Elementalist char and a Necro/Mesmer I am working on.

I once made a character in Guild Wars that was quite a show. The more melee he faced the stronger he became, basically when damaged he gains energy and that energy is used to restore him, alternatively when damaged all surrounding enemies are damaged as well by 2 different spells.
Imagine the looks on some peoples faces when I'd take them on a farming show and not have any weapon equipped. It was a Warrior Monk just so you know.

Guild Wars is not a PvE game. The PvE game is just something to do to learn how skills work :P

Guild Wars PvE is fun for a week or two, but its all about PvP. GvG is brilliant, and so is the Hall of Heroes. You don't NEED a guild to enjoy PvP as you can get with some very good teams in HoH, but to compete in GvG (which is the best part of GW imo) you will need a good guild with decent players. If you played Guild Wars and haven't tried PvP in HoH or GvG, you are missing out big time.

Guild Wars is, cunningly, all about the Guild Wars. As CyanideX said, you havent seen what the game is capable of until youve played HoH. It's very, very different to Eve PvP - there's a lot more emphasis on skill and micromanaged team tactics, and your communications have to be better. It's not a better game, as it has PvP and nothing else, but the PvP is superior to Eve in many ways.
Either way.....if you're interested in playing GW seriously, played it and never found a capable guild, etc, drop me a line.

There's a lot of new PvP content about to be added, and also two new professions. Lots to do there. Now, if we can just find a few more people, maybe Eve-GW could be a go :P

For what's worth, it appears Guild Wars is at this very moment running their Global Free-For-All PvP Weekend ... this event lasts until Sunday midnight, and basically allows to try the PvP part of the game for free, as long as you can download the game client from their web page. It's possible to create pre-built max level character as soon as you launch the game, and see what it's all about.
Not really my kind of game from the little i got to play, but guess some might want to check it out given it doesn't cost anything at the moment ^^;

Been playing it since I guess it came out. Pretty much unlocked all the skills/spells through killing other players (Faction + pvp). It's fun still here and there but the skill and balance just isn't there. It's all about the build and that's it. Wish it was skilled tactical pvp like eve but simply it's not. Simple systems for simple games.

Aint Guildwars PvP like playing Quake III arena. You go to a PVP server and just shoot. Its a seperate server right? And from what I hear Guildwars is a game that once you leave the city you disconnect from the world and enter a single player game with the group of people you have in your group. but all you do is fight stupid NPCs and make gold? I cant see myself even giving it a try. Dont just complain, do something. Channel macrointel meet with likeminded folks, spottings, intel |

Guild Wars is OK if you aren't expecting something deep. Too many people go 'omgwtf its liek diablo it suxs!' (eh, Hugo? ;P) but it's cool in its own way. Unfortunately, I didn't have the patience to grind till the PvP halls, I got stuck at the ascension trials, so I doubt I'll join you, but good luck anyway! ___

Again, Guild Wars only becomes deeper the further up you play. The game is definitely not all about the build when you play against top guilds; theres a massive amount of skill, tactics, communication etc involved. Its not similar to Eve in its style, but I think its similar in the complexity and teamwork required, which si why I think Eve players will make awesome GW players.

I am very interested in getting in a good PvP guild.I have 70% of skills unlocked. I haven't played in months but I was addicted to HoH and used to play for 5 hours a day just in HoH as healer monk. I am rank 3(noob ), the builds I have most experience with are Healer Monk(LOTS) and Ranger spiker/trapper. I never played iway as it was fame farming, and now i see minion factory is the new fame farm build. I wont be able to give it my full time just yet , have eve and a few more games to play, but its top of my list so i'll mail you soon.

Sorry but it's all about the build. If you bring a build to counter another build. then no amount of tactics will save you from defeat.

And if you dont hit a build that you're built to counter, you have a hard time, and depending on how strictly you built to counter that other build, may auto-lose.
This is what's called a 'metagame'; the game outside the game. The key to correct metagaming is being able to counter other things without compromising your ability to beat other builds too much.
Build is a massive part of the game, but build will only get you so far. The rest of the way is tactics. It's not just all about the build :P
Would any of you guys object to geting in touch over MSN? I have the free time to chat and organise things whilst im in work of a day, but am having trouble catching a few of you online in eve. The 1st expansion comes out april so I might start playing again, the new skills + proffesions should bring some exitement back (have unlocked every single skill, rune and weapon upgrade).

Me and a friend or two are considering trying GW, however without a large guild, it is a single player game (except towns) it seems.
Is it worth wasting time and money ?

When I first bought it, it was my first MMORPG. Don't ask why I never tried anything else. Also, I was on a ~2yr gaming break.
Got the game, loved it for the first month. Then realised that the quests were repetitive and meaningless as all that mattered was capping bosses to get all the 1337 skills and mindless PvP'ing over and over again.
So after that I sold it.
