I've been a miner now for a couple of days and I'm enjoying it. I've gotten better gear and better ships and been making good money. I've enjoyed this aspect of the game however a friend of mine pointed out a good fact. I haven't done much fighting if at all outside of the toutrial. So I was just wondering would it be better to go combat or more into mining and manufaturing? For making money and overall game enjoyment. What's your take? Thanks guys

Combat is far more enjoyable than mining. Killing NPCs requires you to do more than just move minerals from your hold into a cargo container, and the NPCs also shoot back, which adds to the enjoyment. Killing other players is more fun than killing NPCs, however - players a.) provide more of a challenge, and b.) drop better loot. -Wrayeth

PvP in EVE is unique in the mmorpg world. I assure you, if you try it you'll never want to do anything else ;)

Mining exists only for generating minerals for ship and gadget production. Which are meant to get blown up.

Just do whatever you think is fun. If it isn't fun, try something else. Becoming a big industrialist can be every bit as much fun as becoming a hot fighter jockey. It really depends on your personality/preferences. Eve's greatest strength is that it isn't one dimensional.

This is true. TBH, I have friends that massively enjoy the industrial and mining side of the game, and I just can't fathom it. -Wrayeth

It sounds like you are happy with mining so I recommend you stick to that as long as you are entertained by it.
A lot of people prefer fighting and I enjoy it more as well, but if you are happy mining why change that?
With pvp it's harder to get a lot of isk because you are rather dependant on the loot that people drop, mining gives a more steady income I've heard.

If your are going to give fighting a go..work up to it. Mining is fairly easy (untill you start moving into low sec) and it's a good income.
Fighting is a risky profession, but can be more fun. Start with low npc's and work up. Don't go running off into 0.0 trying to pvp random rats because you will die really fast.

Edited by: MuffinsRevenger on 22/01/2006 21:55:57 npcing is incredibly mutch more profitble then mining
on this account i started of by mining for a while to even get isk to get myself a cruiser, geting there slowly but surely it took quite a lot of time , and i kept asking myself how the hell people coud afford battlecrusiers and battleships, but i didden't realy care as i actualy enjoyed it quite a bit
i made another account a few days ago to play around with minmatar did two agent hauling missions in the newb ship, got a slasher and did a 1/10 complex (jihadstyle)
after less then a day (3h playing) i had passed 2 mil worth of isk and stuff
it's all up to you though, mining issen't that bad as long as you are doing it together with friends and so on, it's all about finding out what you think is fun after all

IMO you should ignore the people who say "OLOLOL min0ring suxx0rz because i luv fiteing"
If you are enjoying what you are doing at the moment, and have an interest in going towards manufacturing, you should do that. Of course, thats not to say you should avoid combat, you should try it, start by trying some NPCing, or low level mission running, and see what you get out of that. If you like that a bit, get your skills up a bit (few gunnery skills, and skills to use warp scramblers and web's) and try to find someone to help you try a bit of PvP, maybe ask a corp mate to have a quick duel, but without destroying a ship. That can be very fun, and intense, and the first time you try it, it can be a great adrenalin rush, though of course not everyone likes that.
My story is one of mining for the most part, almost a year maybe. I made no money tbh, but thats because I sucked at playing EVE (and am only just getting anywhere close to knowing what I'm doing due to being a n00b, a 2 year in game n00b, but a n00b non-the-less) For that time I was happy doing that. I then tried PvP, and NPCing, and now I've quit liking mining, and started loving to fight.
Basically, this longish post can be put down into: Just try it!

The advantage of noncombative playing, dedicated marketing and manufacturing for example, is that you make isk without having to be logged in.
Imagine that.

Mining is OK for makein' profit, but if you want fun you should at least balance in some weapon or support skills. I prefer useing my shield-tanked ships to help those who are pure-combat users instead of just adding in a insignificant ammount of damage. Give 'em shield mods or fleet mods. Thats the job I do.

The great thing about Eve is that you can do both.
Some days, I love mining.
Other days I jump into one of my combat ships and go from system to system, hunting NPCs.
It depends on what mood you are in. There are many ways to enjoy Eve. Some people love pvp. More power to them.

Not to derail the thread but; there used to be a game with matching PvP, in some ways even better. Then they added insurance to items, made looting impossible and a player base of millions left in disgust.
EVE isn't quite there yet but with the advent of jump clones we've come a step closer..

Well I'm not sure who told you that but if you ask any run of the mill n00b in the n00bcorp they will swear on their granny that mining is more profitable. Mining > ALL... In fact one n00b went so far as to make over a billion a week... All within the safe confinements of empire space of course (which made me wonder when they put ark and stuff back in empire).
The point is... people who dunno sh1t will tell you just about anything so blow their own horn. Do whatever works best for you! |

Here is my advise mining is good for getting safe money but why not try combat missions for some NPC combat you get some good loot from it sometimes and it can save you money in purchasing modules.
I advise you get yourself a cruiser the best you can afford fit it out for combat [Ask in forums for possable setups, However if you can afford to get a battlecruiser.
Why a battlecruiser you ask? Well its not just because they are big and nice looking. In the level 1 and 2 missions they are generly safe but having a big ship gives you a big safety belt if you are inexperienced at Combat of any type also in level 1 and 2 missions you dont ahve to worry about warp scrambling and ECM.
PvP is probably a bit advanced for you tho i advise you go for a mining corperation they will teach you the basics and after a while a pirate corp will declare war on them and you will get some war experience witha corp behind you and some replacemt ships as well. -----------------------------------------------

Try both and see what you like most. I went from mining to hunting npcs to pvp and have to say in terms of enjoyment _nothing_ comes close to "the shakes" (adrenaline) you get from a pvp fight. :)
For making money there¦s not much difference between mining/manufacturing and hunting/missions imo.
You could also try trading if you don't like combat btw. .............

The problem I have with mining is that expands to fill your character.
First you start mining thinking only of cash.
Then you get a hauler.
THen you get a mining cruiser.
Before you know it you have Industry 5 for large barge, and decide "hey why let industry 5 go to waste" and start your career as a builder.
Now you've opened a whole can of worms, now you gotta get a bunch of refine skills up to build ships efficiently.
Now you're building ships and decide you need better BPO's so you start doing research.
I mean it just never stops, there's no point at which your career just STOPS, theres always a new direction to make your character a better miner/builder.

Oddly enough, the same thing works for combat pilots. I started the game knowing I wanted to fly battleships, and since I was Caldari I wanted a raven. So I got one, but my corp was outnumbered in PvP all too often and needed force equalizers, so I trained up my EW skills and purchased a scorpion.
Later, I left that corp and joined an alliance, where I learned that the raven sucks in fleet fights and that the scorp always gets called primary. I realized I needed a turret battleship and everyone was saying how cool Amarr were (and I liked the thought behind lasers), so I picked up skills for them (and trained my gunneries to 4), then bought a 'geddon and, later, an apoc.
After flying Amarr ships for a while, I realized I wasn't having all that much fun with them - they were more of an obligation than anything else. Since I still enjoyed Caldari ships and Minmatar are closest to the Caldari ideology (i.e. ability to switch damage types and burst damage), I decided to go for a tempest (which, oddly enough, was the first Minmatar ship I ever flew) - and it turns out that did the trick.
So now I've got a small engagement ship (raven) and a fleet ship (tempest), now what?
Tech 2 weapons, of course!
After that?
Caldari battleship 5 and training for a dread (current), because I've always loved the "bigger hammer" approach (so sue me!). -Wrayeth
