Well, I will say a simple thing: WE NEED MINERS....
Yes, we need them since they get the minerals to build the stuff.... period. So if you enjoy mining please continue and have fun at it.
But you will not escape from eve addiction, ie i need to get that new shining mining laser, i need to get that tech 2 barge or need to go in low sec to mine merc with my new tech 2 crystals. Also, you will face pvp pirates who just want to blow u in little pieces for the fun of it....
The main thing: have fun and experiment.

well i mined for about 16 hrs the other day since i had a bit of a headache and have been bored with missions for a while now
i could have made a lot more ore and cash by doing the missions and looting.
i though my eyes where gonna fall out at the end
PvP combat takes a bit of skill training though same with manfaturing to make it profitable

Question sounds a bit like: What's more fun, doing sports or playng in a band...
Do whatever you like.
In my younger days I started mining, as it was easy money. Mining became boring, so i decided to do agent missions (kill missions). Agent missions did become boring too (well not exactly boring, but doing the same kind of missions well, becames.. uhm... boring...) Went to .5 systems to kill NPCs in belts. (.4 is dangerous because of pirate risk) Found out .4 was not as dangerous as they say it is and went to .4 roid belts and gradually to lower sec regions.
And now i'm NPCing and PvPing in lowsec space because i like it. (Although it is not fun to get blown up by anotehr player while you encounter a officer rat... but who cares, had a good talk and a good laugh afterwards. :) )
Eventually in the beginning there's only one question to answer: Do I like combat or do I like mining/manufacturing? And that question is only yours to answer.

I like fighting personally. I can always reprocess what I don't need and wind up with some minerals.

Oh those days I mined in low sec with a probe were quite a fun for me ... didn't try it out with a burst though.
