What is the best frigate out of all the races for joy riding? I dont just mean speed. Gotta have attack power and be able to do all kinds of cool med slot things.
Just want your opinions and what you use them for.

kestrel is good for that, its pretty fast.. 3 med slots, and you can pack a nice punch with 4 cruise missles if a cruiser decides to play with you..

Very true. The Kestral is in my opinion the best looking ship in the game, and I bought one just to pimp around in it.

... Try either the Forge or Sinq Laison; i think there's some small Kestrel manufacturer in the Forge, actually.
and yeah, 'tis a nice little ship. You'll want your Electronics and Engineering skills to be at least lvl.4 to get the best out of it though. :s~

For some alternate joyrides:
The Minmatar Vigil currently holds the record for being the fastest frigate in the known universe. But more practically, it has three medium and low slots, which allows you carry around and use quite a few toys while racing around the universe like a shuttle. The downsides: Poor powergrid means not a lot of weapons (although it can certainly use a pair of 125mm rails with no problems). Also, it looks a lot like a giant brown gardening tool, so loses some points for "coolness factor."
The Gallente Incursus is an interesting ship. It currently functions as the Gallente's main gunship. However it has sensors and powergrid matching other race's missile ships, and it has a built-in 5% bonus to hybrid damage. It also has one of the best capacitors you'll see at the frigate level. It isn't too shabby in the speed department either. I like it because 3 125mm railguns + 20% bonus to damage + generic skill bonuses = some serious long-range frigate-level firepower. 3 high slots and turrets, 3 medium slots, and 2 low slots makes for a lot of toys, too.
The Gallente Tristan is much like the the Incursus, but you're trading a turret, some speed, and targeting range for a missile launcher, slightly bigger power grid, and maximum targets.
The Minmatar Rifter is probably going to reclaim its "cool frigate" designation after the next patch. It has fast speed, has the 5% bonus to projectile damage and speed per frigate level, and a great powergrid. 3 turrets and 1 launcher in 4 high-slots, 2 medium slots, and 2 low slots, so you can't quite carry as many toys. The only problem it has currently is that artillery really blows. The artillery problem is being fixed on test server as of this writing.

You mean Medium and Large Artillery blows, but Small Artillery has never been nerfed. I still find the 250 light artillery and its pirate mod versions (e.g. Scouts) the best frigate weapons in the game, and the Rifter the best ship to capitalize on it.

The griffing with 4 meds can actually take on every frigate in PvP.

I have to agree with the griffin for pvp, although its not pretty or very fast (suggest turning those rediculous thrusters to the back!) it can comfortably pack a couple drones, an AC and 2 cruise missiles all the while maintaining an ecm suite of 2 jammers, 1 scrambler, and a stasis web indefinatly. Though for shear pimpness and npc thumping power go for the big pun. Its got some of the strongest sheilds, armor and structure around and the powergrid is massive, you can mount an mwd or accomidate 3 16 grid guns, I used 3 150mm prototype Gauss with it and it was nightmarish, plus its one sleek design! |

The Tristan has always been my favorite Frigate. Versatile and agressive. I also like the Punisher to pack on three energy turrets, utilizing the ship's bonus.

I actually think it is the Merlin. It is by average the as good or slightly better or worse than every other frigate. The only problem it has is no drone capacity. But for you Non-Gallente out there that are hating on drones... That shouldn't matter.

Damn, i forgot how much fun it is to fly those babies:) I got a Rifter and a Tristan fully geared for combat, jump in them now and then to blast some pirates.. IMO much more fun than CR and BS ----------------------------

Rifters are Cruiser Killers in the right hands. Always have been, even since beta. The only frigate that was remotely close was the Punisher, which during a large part of beta had cruiser level stats.
Rifter is the frigate.

Edited by: Tarias Black on 28/08/2003 17:13:45 I'm going to join the rifter crowd here. Cool little ship and mine happily moves at over 1000m/s without MWD, good for getting around!

Rifter Beats all frigates, it has speed plus great attacking for a frig. Rifter is the best choice.

I would have to agree that the Rifter is the best frigate for the purpose you describe. It is the best overall frigate.
The Vigil is probably the funnest frigate to fly around in though. With my current skills, I can zoom along at over 1700, with no cap drain (and I fully expect to be able to break 2000 in it someday). Sure, when doing this it doesn't leave much powergrid for turrets, but it still has a missile launcher, which with heavy/cruise missiles, is all you really need in a frigate.
The Kestrel and its Minmatar cousin the Breacher are also pretty good. With the 4 launchers on the Kestrel, it has a tremendous amount of firepower for a frigate. The Breacher is often overlooked, but trade out one of the Kestrel's missile launchers for a turret, and then add in the speed of the Rifter, and that is the Breacher. Plus, it looks like a flying radio antena, which makes it worth flying for the laugh factor alone.
Merlin and Tristan are pretty good too, and in many ways are comparable to the Rifter, but the Rifter edges em out.
If you could only train one race's frigates, Minmatar would definately be the way to go. You could fly the Rifter, the Breacher, and the Vigil, and as far as frigates go, those would be all you would ever need. |

I'd have to agree with the Rifter fans. It is quite possibly the most pimp lookin' ship out there on the frigate level. It was much more powerful before the patch I think, but it's still hella powerful now. This ship will tear some ships up... and it'll get you around quite nicely with its excellent speed. Hop in... with the top down... and come pic. me up
