Greetings,
Just started playing this week. Pretty fun so far. It's definatly a fun game but feels like a 2 year old game from a texturing perspective. I'm running a pretty high test machine so I'm left wanting a little more in texture department (Opteron 175 w/7800GT).
Kind of curious if the game engine can support higher res texures with normal maps. Or is there new game in the works using a more advanced engine EVE 2.0. ;)
peace,

Id also like to see this. Ive got a high end computer aswell and when i zoom into my ship id like to see more detail. It seems as if the textures scale with the ship in a way that a friggate has a diffrent number of pixels per inch of the ship than a battle ship where if your up close to a battleship its detail level is realitively low when your zoomed in to it with your frigate next to it.
Id love to see a higher rez texture pack with normal maps. If its to hard to do that for all the ships in the game perhaps just the player ships? and asfar as ingame rendering you could allow LOD settings for the user and there system specs.
This is the main improvement id think would add to the eve universe that wouldent require that much work. Im sure high rez versions of the textures exist they just were reduced with the client.

Wouldn't require much work apart from the thousands of hours of art time you mean? :P

One of the reasons why EVE is so popular is that it doesn't require a killer computer to run. At the same time most of the sane players think the content is more important than the eye candy. I would for instance have to stop playing if it started demanding any more.
However as an OPTION to the people with higher end hardware, why not. It's a good idea.

I would love to see that as a optional feature...
If this would be upgraded without maintaining the current graphics I would need to get my employer to buy me a new laptop.
I love the graphics certainly for the type of game EVE is the graphics are very very good. Just have a go at any of the other mmo games and you will notice that the graphics are not the important thing about these games. These games have actual game play that makes them wotrh playing and not just fancy graphics. ------------------------------------------- Should you disagree with me, well I guess that is because I disagree with you. If you have a problem with that please feel free not to tell me. |

This could be done for nearly nothing as a contest by the players themselves. Have a vote on the ugliest ship in the game. Release a texture pack for people and give them a theme to modify it along and pick a winner. Do this once a month and make it an optional download for people.
The game barely makes a dent in my CPU/RAM/GPU/VRAM (even running two clients at the same time) so I for one would really like to see them start-upgrading things, even if it is on a piece meal basis. Some optional texture upgrades and ship models would be most welcomed.

That was the first good idea I've seen in this forum for a long time.
At first I was against this idea but now I'm all for it.
If we can get the players to start working on textures and such we can get improved artwork at no loss of CCP productivity on fixing other problems.

I think eye candy for those of us with nicer systems should be avialable where possible

It's sad that so many games come out with such insane enthusiasim, but then the developers never tap into that and let the gamers themselves contribute directly to the effort.
I would love to make some textures in my space time for various things in the game. I would do it for free as in just for fun.
Imagine the response if they actually threw out a prize such as a rare limited run blue print or $1 billion ISK (wouldn't cost them anything to "print" the money)

Optional high-rez pack is a great idea, contest for reworking ships another great idea.
