It strikes me as odd that we use the word pirate and piracy as if we are talking about some swashbuckling errol flyn hollywood take on the activity of thieves and brigands.
17th and 18th Century thieves and murderers whose mode of transport was a sailing ship were still thieves and murderers. So how about we call a spade a spade.
Some examples:
take "gate camping", sounds like some healthy outdoors holiday when in reality it is a gang of robbers/brigands intent on bushwacking a solitary traveller and either extracting money with menaces or robbing with violence.(or both)
or describing as 'piracy' sneaking around the loot cans of someone elses battle and hoping to be unobserved as, like a jackal or hyena, they steal some loot. Not piracy but sneak thiefery. At least at a gate camp the pack of robbers bring down their own prey.
So lets have the activities of those formerly known as 'pirates' be described with clarity and honesty as:
theft, brigandage, extortion and, for those who enjoy 'popping' noobie pods, psychopathy.
What d'ya think.

So let's call pirates, pirates...If one pirate think another is not worthy of calling himself a pirate, then he will settle the matter himself IG (most likely)...not go whining on the forum about how he should or should not be called.
My 50$
I appreciate the thoughtful reply but just for the sake of clarity - I am not a pirate. As for whining - never been a victim of one yet either (so far I've 'hidden' in hi sec space where its safe) so not a wine but entering into the spirit of the game.

Originally by: Butter Dog You're just talking semantics.
Does it really matter what subjective meanings the word should break down into?
We all know what is meant by the term 'pirate' in the context of EVE, and thats all that really matters.
No I don't agree, much of pirate semantics is designed to enoble their trade, to glorify their predation and to justify their naughty behaviour. It is humbug.

Originally by: Butter Dog I think pirating is quite an honourable profession myself. Its high risk, low reward. I admire people who stick at it despite the setbacks.
honourable in what sense? honourable amongst thieves?

Because giving a general name allows pirates (would be ones) to feel better about themselves. They are playing to a "stereotype" and therefore are not bad people in their own eyes. They do things for fun or because that is "what pirates do, by definition". They won't see it straight for fear of accepting something that is within them, darker than their main characters.
I am an alt. This is my darker side that has no other outlet than to kill people and destroy their ship and courage. I accept this side of myself rather than reject it.
Oooh I wouldn't like to meet you in a dark alley!
