Please excuse my poor ability to explain things, but here is what I think is the problem for new players.
New players can't experience all the features that are not necessarily in game things. Example: Start a new alliance with new players of similar experience and level and enter 0.0. No chance in hell, they will get pwned, they must rely on veterans solely for the things new players just can't fly (re: Capital ships). A bunch of new players could work 500 times harder than the rest of the established alliances, get masses of isk and gear to build outposts and the like and then find they can't defend them. Because the older players have the I win button. So they need to go recruit older players, hire mercs (which in most cases will be hugely annoying, all that work only to find u can't compete). etc. Which having spent time with a lot of new players when I started a second character, while the learnt from what I had to say. They also felt annoyed a lot of the time because of the things they new they couldn't participate in. This is where the unfair comes in. The things that everyone else had the opportunity to do, are now gone. The established playing field is only breakable by those with the Skill Points to do so (lets not even add the fact that hey couldn't really break the tech II market to try and leaverage the power that provides against the established alliances). Then I could start on the fact that they will find it very hard to break into the clique's that have formed by the older players to even begin diplomatic contact with the established alliances. I think these aspects of Eve, the player interaction and shaping of "world", are were Eve truely shines, buts it were "noobs" are truely left out.
I didn't say this could be fixed, but its worth thinking about. Another comment to the orginial poster, PvP is a means to an ends, not the end game content , the relationships you build with other people will be far more important than how many kills you get (unless your one of those uber pvp'ers like Ginger Magician , then you got nothing else to hang on to but your own lunch box).
