The strength of the Thorax is drones... you can't count them out. They are it's FIRST AND FOREMOST weapon. All the turrets and mods are nice, but Its a drone ship. If you dont have a bay full of heavy drones and be practiced at quick deployment and management... then you might as well leave your ship docked. A Thorax is best at a distance. 20-25k with 250mm protos and 8 heavies in the sky.
When at last they discover the center of the universe there will be many people who will be dissapointed that they are not it. |

Edited by: Gafton on 28/08/2003 19:07:31 You have to be under 20km away for the drones. As for drones you'd best use a variety of them as the person you'll be fighting will be using hardners. Since the person is using hardners your effective damage goes down.
Worst case you face a moa 1v1 (best cruiser imo). Moa has 4 med slots that means 1 shield booster, em, thermal, and kinetic harders. Put on 2 250s and 2 650s and give your ship maximum damage range (em-thermal). No way the thorax can take all the damage that it'l dish out. Since the drones are now ineffective they just cause lag for both parties and the thorax cant match the moa for damage so it dies.
The thorax is setup to be a drone carrier. It's not equiped to take damge but to give it. The thorax is best used in groups. In groups the thorax doesnt need to worry as much about defence as there will be others there to take damage as well.

Of course you are assuming all the damage the drones are doing is thermal or kinetic. If they happen to be explosive or EMP then the drones aren't suddenly out of the fight. PvP is definately possible for a Thorax. All to often people say "well if a ship is outfitted in such and such a way it'll toast you." Yes, but that's an if, and it's the case for all ships. Soloing a BS while possible is not suggested, but it's cool that it is possible. I wonder about needing to be at long distance all the time... why not carry different types of ammo... No one can say that Anti-matter ammo sucks when you are within proper ranges. Oh... and the nosferatu thing... why not put neutralizers on? If you can drain your opponents cap. properly your drones can take care of the rest. I don't know if that would work because I havne't had the chance to test it, but it does seem entirely feasable. Correct me if I'm wrong of course.

Gafton,
Are you fully aware what the power of 9 to 10 Heavy Combat drones can do?
A Thorax with a swarm of heavy combat drones can reduce a 20 to 30k NPC target in seconds, faster than non drone cruisers can obliterate NPC frigates. A Heavy Combat Drone is about the equivalent of an 6-8k NPC drone like a Sansha Plague or Manslayer---comparable to a player level 3 combat frigate in durability but mounts a single medium class gun. Each Heavy Drone is in effect, a flying detached medium class turret.
Unlike the Moa, the Thorax has damage bonuses on its hybrid guns, not range bonuses. Its five low slots means being able to power as many big rails on its five turrets and more space to mount magnetic stabilizers to increase damage.
The Moa is superior defensively over the Thorax with more room for shield hardeners, but the Thorax is superior offensively with its ship and drone ability to belt out pure damage.
The Moa will have to rely on missiles (heavy, cruise, torpedoes) to even the Thorax advantage. But the problem is, a lot of people don't like missiles. Relying on 625s and 450s isn't good enough, when the Moa does not have rate of fire bonuses for artillery---a much better cruiser for this is the Rupture. Even when missiles are corrected, Blackbird, Caracal and Rupture could all support more missiles.

With this i beat a pirate omen, caracal and rupture all at once. I also beat a cerberus. I usually have 3 damage mods and no armor rep actually.

Because last time I checked, Nosferatu's drained 10 cap over 45 seconds, and have range of 1.2km. Is that even worth the fitting reqs?
Medium nos I have a range of 11km and transfer 30 cap every 6 seconds. Not sure where you got your figures from, but the ones you have quoted are worse than a small nos.
May I suggest you go and check them again and come back when you know what you're on about :D
