To be honest mate I very much doubt it but of course it does depend a lot on skills and mods on ship.
For example I have 25 mill skill points and have been concentrating on Eagle HAC and its relevant skills now for several months .
I can solo all lvl 3s no problem and also before RMR I could solo a few lvl 4s.
Most 4s I had my alt along in a Mega boosting me though to be on the safe side.
Im sure someone has tried it or is in fact doing it but from my experience it can be rather a lot of work. Even in my HAC it has become rather a grind at times ...but then again thats just me !
Ive not done 4s since RMR so things may be different....
I try to have the attitude 'If you cant replace it then dont fly it' but as we all know its not as straight cut as that at times

Honestly speaking a BC cannot handle lvl 4. You will be called upon to tank spawns of vast proportion. Like 3x 500k BS, 11 webber frigs, 7 330k cruisers
You need a pretty extreme tank or some crazy WTFPWN gank to get that to a managable spawn on a ferox.

However, a Ferox makes a fantastic support for another pilot in a battleship.
I've been on a few missions now with a mate in a Raven. Raven setup for torps and tank, the Ferox painting cruisers and popping the frigs.
Works rather well :)

Edited by: Arakasai on 25/01/2006 17:59:48 I solo level 4 missions in my Ferox. You just have to be very careful and outfitted correctly for the missions. I use a passive tank build with most of my pertinant skills at level 4.
I have 5.5 million skill points with 3.5 million invested in learning and industry.
That said, if I often have corp mates drop in in Battle Cruisers (we are a small newish corp of real life friends) when I do level 4 because it pays well and is exciting for them. I believe I have completed about 10 now, 4 solo and 6 with corp mates. I have not lost a Ferox yet on level 4 missions, I did come REALLY close with the drones in an infiltrate mission.
So, can they be soloed in a Ferox? Yes, a good number of them can be soloed in a Ferox. Some of the more difficult ones like the extraveganza missions, I turn down. I am currently working on Silence the Informant but I believe I will not be able to solo it in my Ferox. I can complete the first level but the second level is likely beyond the abilities of a Ferox just due to how it is setup.
You will also have great difficulty killing a battleship over about 600k because you will not be able to out damage the ability to shield boost. I could not kill the 1.2 mill BS in the vengance mission alone, I had to get corp mates to help finish that mission.
I built my first Raven (finally managed to save up 100 mill) last night so I will likely stop playing around with level 4 missions in my Ferox, except possibly when my corp mates want to play. It is not overly fun for them when I am launching missiles at 60km in my Ferox ... it will likely be REAL boring for them when I start launching them at 150km in my Raven.
With my full passive build I can tank 3 600k Battleships long enough to kill one of them. I have regularly tanked the cruiser/BS mobs for long enough to whittle down several of them ... warp out ... return. I enjoy the challenge :)
Passive tank FTW!

I have a few setups scattered around a variety of threads. It has more to do with tactics and understanding your enemy than anything really.
So what is my build and how does it change?
High ---- 6x SX2000 Heavy Launcher 2x 250mm Prototype Railguns
Medium ------ 1x AB II 2x Large Shield Extender II 2x Active Hardener II
Low --- 2x PDU II 2x BCU I
I shift out the AB for missions where speed is not needed. The AB is to prevent swarming (drones/elite frigates) or at least prolong my freedom for a bit :) So I switch it out for another Large Shield Extender a lot.
I will shift deeper into a passive mode if I find I am being overwhelmed sustaining damage and I cannot manage the mission without more damage sustainability. Which includes Shield Power Relays in the low slots. So far I have only done this for the last level in Vengance where you have to handle 4x Sentry III, 1x 1.2 mill BS and 16 or so cruisers.
The trick in level 4 missions is to stay out of range where at all possible. To be able to sustain damage long enough to either whittle the enemy down and bail or to whittle them down enough to sustain the damage per second. It either case, passive shielding works well because it gives you a massive initial shield that has to be overcome.
It is important to know which ships can nail you with special effects and what the ramifications will be.
Do I care if that drone gets close to me? What will it do if it does? Will it web me or just hit me for damage? How far away are the rest of the drones, does the web really hamper me? IE will the others be able to catch me an swarm me.
Then you plan your target order accordingly. As often as not, things like elite frigates, I try to take out on approach, if they make it to me (and they are not warp jammers) I let them hang around and shoot/web me while I take out the cruiser slowly approaching because I can kill them quicker and they hit for a lot more.
I am ALWAYS moving away from the enemy and I control the rate by turning on and off my AB and raising and lowing my speed. I am ALWAYS lined up for near instant warp. I am ALWAYS making sure there is nothing near me that can warp jam me. On the occasion that it does happen I concentrate on that ship(s) and clear them as fast as possible. Now when I say ALWAYS it actually means until I am 100% positive I have complete control of the situation :)
I always configure my active hardeners and my AB (in or out) depending on the mission. If I need to, I warp out and increase my passive shielding ability.
My Shield HP varies between 9500 and 13500 depending on my configuration and my peak regen rate varies between 40/s to 90/s.

yep with passive shield tank ferox you can do lvl 4 missions, but only some deadspace mission, but I can do like 100% of the non-deadspace, I run gallente navy mission so end up fighting dominx and mega which is surprisingly weak.
about the same setup as the top guys except I have less skills only 1milsp. but 5x Abalest heavy 1x 200 prototype 1x 250 prototype 3x large shield extend 2 1x Kinetic, 1x thermal 2x PDS 1x Ballistic 1x Shield recharge relay.
get 50shield a second. very easily for the non dead space missions.

Using a Ferox for LVL 4's is using the wrong tool for the job. Althought its possible why would you? In a fox can smoke lvl 3's for infinetly higher isk/hr than grinding a lvl 4 over the course of 6 hrs.
Wait until you have a Raven and decent skills then the isk/hr proposition begins to shift to the lvl 4's.

Well, for one, I prefer a challenge in my gaming. I enjoy doing things others believe to be difficult or even impossible.
A second reason, for me the game is not all about isk/hour. It is more about learning and understanding. When it becomes isk/hr I might as well go play EverQuest again.
A third reason ... why wouldn't you try rather than sit back and believe it cannot be done like so many other?
A fourth reason ... I worked hard to get my raven and I cannot afford to replace it. I wanted to insure I knew what the level 4 missions were about before I attempted them with my irreplaceable Raven.
And incidentally it is pretty good isk/hr, better than what is offered via level 3 missions. What you do not get is decent loyalty points per hour which, ultimately works out to be more money I suppose :)

6 Launchers? OMGWTFPWN!!! I WANT 6 LAUNCHERS TOO!!!!!

I prefer 2 x Heavy Neutron blasters (Modal is good if you can get em) here, fast tracking hard hitting - if I web an inty i can smack em for about 50 per shot with AM loaded.

I'm in the 2nd level right now (and have been for a couple of reboots). The bs aren't hard - I can tank 4 at a time and still have room to spare. It takes approx 6-13 minutes to pop one, depending on how lucky I am and how much boost they decide to use.

I think I am more interested, currently, in working towards a Tech II Ferox than any other ship in the game. That may change but a Raven seems pretty bloody easy to me ATM :)
I couldn't agree more the Ferox is an awesome ship and although I've got a long way to go I really wanna go for the Nighthawk. ------------------- "In an average hangar bay there are 1,242 objects an M.CORP member could use to kill you, including the bay itself."

The vulture is geared to passive tank ... do not fall into "ooo pretty missile toys" trap!
hehe ... seriously though, I think the Vulture has a lot more potential than the Nighthawk ... that is just my opinion though.

Vengeance, AE, Midst of DS 4/5 ect will all pop you very quickly. There are many easy 4's and you can turn down a mission without standing loss every few hours.
So if you don't want to do the hard ones yes it's possible, not many ships can tank things like MoD 4/5 for very long (not that you're supposed to but its a good challange)
Do what makes you happy, this is a game after all. |

Your opinion stated above is exactly wrong. I have tanked 1-940K BS spawn AND 3- 460K BS spawans AND 6-cruisers and several webbers at once.
And yes I have witnesses that verify my ability to do so. The Destruction of your ship is usually preceeded by the thought,"I think I will try somthing a little different this time...." |

you can make more Isk/hour doing lvl 3's if you do not bother to pick up the loot. With Lvl 4 loot even the standard modules sell well, and you can pick up alot of them. the Ferox can tank some lvl 4's pretty well, but the main problem I had was that any BS over 1.1M in bounty was downright impossible to take down. The Ferox simply does not have enough DPS to break the tanks of multiple BSs in an efficient manner. Missions like Vengeance, AE 4, GE 4 can have very tough BSs and would simply suck all the fun out of doing them in a solo Ferox. I switched to my Cerberus, and do them just fine.

Currently running:
HI 5x 'Arbalest' Heavy Missile Launcher 2x Dual Modulated Light Energy Beam I
MED 2x Large Shield Extender II 1x AB II 2x Active Hardener II (Invuln, EM, Therm, Kin... depends on NPC type)
LOW 3x PDS II 1x BCU II
DRONES 1x Acolyte I 1x Hobgoblin I 2x Hornet I 1x Warrior I
No complaints with the setup yet. I'd like to get more DPS out of my missiles, but that's just a matter of some skill increases.

Can I ask how you guys are getting 40 - 90/s recharge with this setup? It's possible that my mistake is in the calculation, but did this basic setup using Quickfit and I calculated 9667.547 hp with a 455.45 recharge time - which comes out to 22.23 per second. I'm fairly new and I'm looking for a good passive tank. Any help is appreciated.

(Total Cap/Time to Recharge) * 2.5
Is the rough formula for peak recharge efficiency. The recharge curve is a bell curve not a linear one.

High ---- 5x Limos heavy 2x 250 proto rails
Medium ------ 2x Active Hardner (Invul or NPC Specific) 3x Shield Extender (Preferably the Tech II version)
Low --- 3x PDU 1x BCU
If you are running into problems fitting stuff, it may be useful to drop one of the shield extenders and add another hardner. Also, use your low slots to make it work. If you need more CPU, replace a low slot with a CPU boost item.

Great, Thanks. That makes sense. With that calculation, it puts me at about 50/s. That is inline with the other posts. So, another n00b question. If I can passive at 50/s with infinite cap and a Med SB II will give me 30/s with major cap costs, why would anyone go with active tanking with this ship? My current setup is:
5 x Malkuth Heavies 2 x 200 mm accelerator cannons
3 x Large Ex I 2 x active Hardeners
2 x Power Diag Systems 2 x Shield Relays
So, with that calculation, I get better then a tech II recharge rate and it is infinite. Seems like a winner to me.
