Hello Fellow Pod Pilots
I would like some setup suggestions for a Viator that I will be getting soon :) As a miner I will be useing it as my main ship for just about every job apart from hauling low end minerals and ore.
Q1.Should I try and fit for speed or try and tank with the good resistances the ship give?
Q2.Do I fit a MWD or AB?
Any suggestions would be a great help Thanks.

High Cloak
Med MWD, EM Shield Rest Hardner and a Invunlerability Field.
Low Damde Control, Small Amour Repairer and Reinforced Bulkhead.

I don't use one, but the slot layout is very similar to my ishkur 'cept in the highslots, so try this out.
MED: AB, cap recharger, cap battery
LOW: 2x Small Armor Repairer, 1x Explosive Hardener(Active)
Should be nice, don't know about fitting.

Main thing to remember about the blockade runners is their insane agility, a MWD is a must.
For a basic fitting I'd suggest this:
Med: 10mn MWD, Low: small armour rep II, explosive hardner, nano II/cap relay
High and meds are a bit of a problem, its all dependant on whether you want to fight off your attacker, hide, or use EW to escape...

I fit: -nothing in high -10mn MWD2, cap rechargers -small armor repper 2, two WCS (in case two inties with +2 warp scrambies decide they want to hunt me out in 0.0)

I use mine for hauling things in and out of 0.0, so I go through several chokepoints that are bubbled/pirate infested.
Highs: Cloak Mids: 10mn MWD, Medium Shield Booster, EM shield hardener/cap recharger Lows: Local Hull Nano, 2x WCS
Gives you +5 warp strength, so you really only have to worry about stilletos (and specialized setups at that), or gangs of intys.
With good nav skills and agility implants, it warps lightning fast as well. With 3750 cargo you can fit a packaged barge, or an inty/af + kit, or a ton of loot/mins.
I dont try to armor tank it because if I get to the point where I'm scrambled with +5, I'm generally going to be dead anyways. The medium booster has saved me a few times undocking from 0.0 stations with instalocking battleships hammering on me before I could get to warp.

I did not see the low explosive resistance for armour thnx. I will fit a MWD it makes sense to get through as fast as possible, tanking will do no good against a gank squad. Thanks again

Got to admire you for trying
If I was you I would definitely fit a Cloak of some sort in the one high slot you have.

What about Passive tank on the Viator is it possible to fit a good one for blockade running against a small camp. With the small armor repairer in low it should be possible with the new skills.
Is it worth me training the new armour tanking skills?

if passive tanking, getting all the new compensation skills to 3 or more is a must. but i have used a viator for a long time now and have never changed my setup (survived a good few gate camps) Try: Cloak 10mn mwd, invulnerability ward, med/small shield booster 3 nanofibres
this means you can align to warp in a matter of seconds, you have a top speed approaching 3km a second, and you can tank the few stray shots that might hit you at these speeds. Your built in Warp Core Stabs will prevent the odd tackler from stopping you too.

High - Improved Cloak
Mids: 10mn MWD, whatever passive shield tanks you want
Lows: 3 Local hull nanofibers
You have a built in warp core stab of +2 so if something is shooting you you are either about to to warp away or you are about to die. Putting in armour-boosting equipment in the lows doesn't help the Viator much.
With this setup and navigation to 5 the Viator goes 2500 m/s. When cloaked, it still hits about 100 m/s.
One trick is to hit your MWD then immediately cloak. You will still get the benefit of the MWD for the full cycle, so I often end up about 5km from the gate before my speed returns to normal (i.e. less than 100 m/s). It's virtually impossible for a small (i.e. less than three) gate camp to stop you as even if they breach your cloak you will be a second from the gate.
Be careful of bubbles, though.

Wee Dave and Kateryne thanks for the advice
I will keep it simple then Nano's in Low and EM Shield hardners with MWD in Med and Cloak in High.
Thanks

I use the Viator for hauling highvalue cargo thru unsecure space and I've still to see the rat that pummels thru this setup. Please notice that this definately is a Fast in/ fast out setup, so IBM's is a must!!!
High: Cloak Med: 10AB II. 2X Invulnerabilityfield Low: 3X nano's, expanders or WCS's(for the paranoid :)) as needed
With the Invulnies running it takes a few hits, even from a gankcrew to chew thru the shield. And if they do get to your armour before you warp out, the inherent resistances of the Viator, will save U some time for that cruzial alignment. All this said: it can't tank for an extended period of time, but it has got me through some pretty badass situations without reaching hull.

For me its gotta be High: Cloak Medium: MWD and 2 Hardeners Lows: 3 nanos, or 2WCS +1 nano
even webbed(80%) it can still go over 300ms and with 3 nanos it can warp in under 6 seconds, I`ve never tried tanking it I`d rather not hang about long enough to need to.

The Viator is a real nasty one to fit out! Tight on grid but plenty of CPU spare makes me think I'm not fitting something the devs intended.
I'm happy with this setup.
High: Cloak
Mid: Small Cap Booster (with cap booster 150 charges fits 2) Mid: Small Cap Booster (with cap booster 150 charges fits 2) Mid: MWD
Low: Exp Hardener Low: Overdrive Injector Low: Small Armour Rep
Tech II or named as you see fit.
This gives me:
Over 2k armour All armour resists 50-70% Over 2000m/s Sustainable MWD with cap boosters (alternate them so one can be reloading while other has a charge left) 3200 cargo capacity Cloakable It's a hauler so plenty of space for cap charges and they are cheap so can take loads along and jettison whatever isn't needed if you need more space.
Posted with an alt, cos I don't want you to know what my setup is if you meet me!

Edited by: Lobster Man on 02/07/2006 19:42:09 I like my setup: Improved Cloak II 10mn MWD II/Named MWD, 2x hypnos multispectral ECM/T2 Multispec 2x named nanofibers, 1x WCS
I figure anything fast enough to catch me will be easily scrambled, but if I can't scram it, I've got the WCS just in case; and anything big enough to kill me can't catch me. I can pull about 2200m/s in that setup.
I've busted through many a camped system (with bubble) with 10+ ships with no trouble at all.

What difference between the Occator and the Viator allows the Viator to go 2500m/s with a mwd and my Occator going much slower with a 10mn mwd? -------------------------------------------- In the end, everyone is on my little island. |

I had mine fitted for speed only, never lost one to date. Fitted as follows:
High: cloak II
Meds: MWD II, cap II, Cetus ECM Shockwave (9km range and maxxed strength)
Lows: 3 x local hull nanofibre
Hope you enjoy your new toy

Hi Slot:
Tech II Cloak
Mid Slots:
10MN MWD II Shield Recharger II [Highly Valuable When Cloaked!] Cap Recharger II
Low Slots: [Speed Setup] 3x Named Nanofibers [Zoom Zoom!]
[Tanking Setup] Small Armor Repairer II Internal Force Field Array I Energized Reactive Membrane II
[Interceptor Evading Setup] Internal Force Field Array I 2x Warp Core Stabilizer I's
There are many other setups that benefit a ship with this much CPU available. The best ones I have are not listed, but they can be extrapolated from these base examples.
If you have high Shield/Armor skills, you can take a good amount of damage on a 15km MWD approach to a gate. You would then gate through to the next system, toggle the MWD for one activation, then cloak.
Your Cap Recharger II and Shield Recharger II will help your Cap/Shields get back to 100% quickly. You can then align for a Safe Spot or the next gate, get up to full speed cloaked, then uncloak and hit warp pretty quick. Of course by the time you are ready to warp, you should be at least 50km from the nearest hostel. This way they have no chance of scrambling you before you jump to warp.
Blockade Runners are a very useful ship to fly, and I highly enjoy using mine! __________

Cloak 10mn MWD II, Tracking Disruptor, Sensor Dampener Small Rep II, Energised Reflective plating II, RCU (not sure might be a internal force field will check).
The EW onboard allows you to jam 2 targets and i only use it if webbed to break web and align to jump to a safespot.
With transport 5 this baby has +10 wcs and the small armor rep as a duration of 3 seconds.
With IBM it's neight unstoppable. YARR *cough* *cough* /dustball |

Duncan - I m 'fraid this is wishful thinking as there is no +10 wcs ship anywhere out there. The bonus is "just" +2 warp stabs hard fitted to the ship in case you mistook the description for 2/level
