As a Gallente in a Caldari corp living in gurista space, I can tell you there is no real missle defense. A raven spamming missles at your megathron is a stream of guarenteed damage. Using the two of eight high slots in a mega for defenders is no assurance that you will destroy even one of the incoming missles from a raven BS due to zig-zagging defender vectors and heavily armored missles that take multiple defenders to kill. The speed of missles now makes a smartbomb useless as a defense. You'd need super human reflexes to catch one and the cap cost will get you if the missle damage doesn't.
To those who still say smartbombs and defender missles are enough, test it. You'll find you are very wrong.
There should be some sort of module that causes a missle to explode prematurely and as a result cause less damage. I like the idea of some sort of mini cannon to destroy incoming missles too, but it would have to be balanced to 1 for 1 highslot.
The smartbomb device could still be effective if it could sense an incoming missle and detonate it automatically. The "twitch" skill needed to do it now is just crazy not to mention has no place in EvE.
The popularity of the raven as a pvp and pve ship gives evidence to how effective missles are compared to other weapon forms. Not saying nerf the raven or missles necessarily, but give those who want to use the slots some REAL options to counter missles/lower their effectiveness.

BTW, flares can contain their own oxidizer. There are flares that work underwater.

Fine, then they need to raise misisle baamage. Because there's no real damsge issue atm. And that stuffs everyone WITHOUT missile defences. Unless we get into inherent...
If you want a true missile/point defence model, you need to look elsewhere
