Both of the following I heard this morning on the radio on the way into work. Two very different quotes from two very different people.
1) "I would have given more years of servitude if they had only moved me a few feet into the shade."
2) "Boy don't you dare walk around here like you hit a triple, you were born on third base."
1a) Solomon Northup while he was being hung for assaulting an overseer.
From the book 12 Years a Slave - A memoir of a northern black musician lured into a trap, by promises of becoming part of a traveling band, then sold into slavery. It was apparently squashed by the literary juggernaut Uncle Tom's Cabin which was released a year after his memoir.
I have not read the book but this interview has brought the book to my attention and I plan on reading it as it seems like a very very very interesting story. Recently it was made into a movie, but I will wait to see that until I read the book. It is not one I think I need to see on the big screen.
2a) Coorey Booker was quoted last night, after winning an impromptu Senate election in New Jersey. He was speaking to what his father would say to him when he was younger and caught him "walking with a little too much swagger or if he was acting too tall for his britches"
So yes neither of these quotes are earth shattering but I found power in the first one and good humor with the second. So I now open this thread to quotes of any flavor. |

The first quote reminds me of the song "Cotton" by Texas bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins. My #1 favorite musician ever, and I have a lot of favorites. That guy sure could play guitar and write a song.

Oh yeah, Joe Campbell is a modern day prophet/wise man to me. So much knowledge about all kinds of stuff, and so many insights. I need to watch more of his rambling lectures about mythology. Some really insightful gems pop up when his train of thought leads him off on some wandering tangent. He's not some kind of scripted lecturer or preacher; things he's connected together just come out as he talkes. |
