I've played eve since before release....untill you can fit mwd's eve travel sucks ass. It confines you to very small areas, and makes it exceedingly difficult to do trade runs or explore the galaxy. I remember after first playing in the metroplolis reigon, thinking god this takes forever to go from one system to the next. Then you look on the map, and you see people in ammarr and ammold etc...and think my god this universe is insanely immense. I could never see it all even if i tried.
It used to take hours to get anywhere. It used to take hours to do anything. That was the price you paid for being a noob. I mean it took forever just to dock at a station.What i'm saying it takes time....useless time..wasted...waiting....idle
I can honestly say it was tedious beyond all control...even with a herd of afterburners, getting from ammold to amarr prime would take over an hour. This is a game. Its not..lets see how much time we can take getting from one place to the next.
the highways are fantastic at saving time...however a fantastic increase in your gaming time, should increase your risk!!! Make the highways dangerous as hell. Make fast travel a risk based thrill ride!!! Make them go right through 0.0 space, and all the other sectors of space. Perhaps highways oculd be random; meaning you know where your destination is, but you don't know the path...and you don't know what you will incounter along the way. sometimes easy..some time your going to get hit by a herd of cows, who's name looks like its giving you the finger. hehe
I think creating massive risk to fast travel, is better at creating a regional dynamic, than making it take 3 hours to get from venal to fountain, and from khanid to inhenges. Make it mean...also that will stimulate the economy. Use incentives to create a player based economy, that help other player roles out also. Don't justs wast all of our time getting from one gate to the next. This game was about risk, and power! Well lets see who who controls the highways??? Will it be sinster corp? or will it be the CFS Alliance? That will define your markets, in a more satsifying way than any other. As the gaming population matures, more and more will seek pvp experiences...this will create one more opportunity for them.
Highways are excellent....being riskless, and creating riskless opportunities for people....is extremely bad, for a game defined by interpersonal organizations and conflict. ie where is the POWER DYNAMIC in safe highways?
