With 1.5M SP or so, I never had to warp out of any L3:
HI: 5x heavies, 2x neutron blasters HI: 4x heavies, 3x neutron blasters HI: 5x 250mm rails, 2x assault launchers
MED: 2x LSE2, 1x invuln, 2x rat specific hardeners MED: 2x LSE2, 2x rat specific, 1x webber
LOW: 4x PDU
Pick one HI setup, pick one MED setup.
I swapped out PDU for SPR and found that the PDU was marginally better. At the time with the first MED setup (without the web), it was 42/s regen with 80% resists in the needed resists (equates to around 200dps tank at peak).

I was just playing around with a passive tank while doing PvE, and it occured to me when I crashed to desktop that it has one inherent advantage. You don't have to be there to manage it, so when you crash as long as you have a tank good enough it does not matter if you crash!

Depends on the mission, but, there's one I use for tanking L4 Angel-based missions while my buddies gank stuff. DPS is pretty low, but it tanks like mad.
(drones are assumed, whatever you can run)
Highs: 5 XR 3200 heavy, 2 250mm prototype rails Mids: 3 LSE 2, 1 invuln 2, 1 med booster 2 Lows: 4 PDS 2
13.5 k shielding, and enough cap regen to run the rails, invuln and booster. I've run all-out for 10+ minutes and not dropped my cap. All up, I get 90-91 dps of regen, and I've purposely aggroed the hell out of L4 AE to see just how tough it is, and I lived.
For non-Angel, 1 less heavy and 1 more rail, 1 less LSE and pull the invuln for 2 race-specific hardeners.
These work with T1 hardeners/pdcs and named T1 boosters as well, but I would never run a Ferox without LSE 2s.
And, for missions where a buttload of tank isn't necessary: 3 rails, 4 heavies, 2 LSE 2, 1 invul 2, web, paint, enough pdcs to fit, and whatever damage mod seems tasty.

My Ferox setup is simple and has gotten me through every level 3 mission without a problem. I have 3 Million Sp's so it's not a newb setup, but its not stellar either. Hi's 5X Named Heavy Launchers 2X 250mm Prototype Gauss Guns Med's 2X Large T2 Extenders Named 10MW AB For Sniping 2X Mission Specific Hardners. I use NAmed cause I can't afford T2. Lo's 3X PDU BCU
5 Light Scout Drones
THis will get me through anything. I only have BC level 3, so I will probably train it to 4 to get the extra Shield bonus's.
After yer mission, just go back in a KEstrel with tractors and full nano to get the loot...

Been able to finish every level 4 mission in my Ferox with the below setup except for Worlds Collide and Enemies Abound last step.
Hi x5 Arbalest Heavy Missle Launchers x1 250mm Prototype gauss gun x1 small tractor beam
Mid x3 tech 2 large shield booster x2 tech 2 hardners rat specefic
Low x2 tech 2 Ballistic Control Unit x2 names Shield Power Relay
Basically 11310 shield with 500sec regen and good resists.
Your cap regen is nothing but you don't use any cap since your not having to boost.
I drop most of the cruisers and mid size stuff quickly and then work on the battleships. My drones eat up the frigates.
You just watch your shield go down slowly until the damage and regen equal out and your golden.

Some very interesting setup's here! My own Ferox setup is as follows-
Highs 5 x Arbalest Heavies (2 x Proto 125mm rails armed with antimatter in other two slots a possibility) Meds 1 x T2 Cap Recharger 1 x T2 Large Shield Booster 1 x T2 Invul field 2 x T2 Specific Shield amps or 2 x T2 Specific passive shield amps
Lows 1 X Emergency Damage Control 2 x T2 PDS 1 x T2 BCU
5 x Scout drones of various types
You can run the Large booster and active hardeners no problem with the above set-up. I find the few extra points of resist the damage control adds well worth the effort.

Edited by: Grendel Marqun on 28/09/2006 03:51:07 I've been finding this Railox fit to work VERY well for L3s. There's only one mission I don't do in it (I think we all know that mission, yes?). It's not cheap, and does require engineering, drones and gunnery 5 to fit, plus a few level 4s, so not a newlie friendly config.
Highs: 5x 250 mm proto rails, amat and iridium, 2 arbalest assaults, mission-specific Mids: LSE 2, 2 T2 active hardeners, optical targeting computer, fleeting webber Lows: 2 pds 2, 2 mag stab 2
5 light drones, mission-specific
I've found that even on most of the nastier missions, I can kill enough ships fast enough to save my tank. Which is pretty much the point: Kill 'em all FAST and move on. Assaults and 5 light drones mean NO frig is safe, and the web will pull all but the worst of em down into 250-fodder. Optimal with amat, BC 4, and sharpshooter 3 is 25 km, and is still effective at 35 km. Iridium reaches well over 60 optimal, allowing accurate fire to the edge of sensor range.
DPS is substantial for a Ferox, at least compared to what I'm accustomed to flying (mostly zomg teh tank! missile ships). With a lot of 3s in gunnery, I get about 145 dps from the rails alone with amat. Inside 30 km where everything works, I get something over 210.
You DO need to watch the tank, though, and be damn sure you're wearing the right hardeners, and think about your targeting priorities. 7k shielding means the peak regen is under 30 dps, so failing to pick out the really dangerous stuff can be....bad. Keeps life interesting though :P

Current Ferox Setup of Doomly Doom and Deathly Destruction:
Highs 5 * High Heavy Missle 2 * Tractor Beam (loot can spammage!)
Mids 2 * Large Shield Extender 1 Thermal Hardner 1 EM Hardner 1 Named Shield Recharger
Lows 2 * BCS 2 * Shield Power Relays
Drones 5 * Mix of light drones
Skilling up BC for more resists as well as the Engineering shield resist skills + the two hardners for the lowest base resists I hope will give very nice resists all round with a nice amount of shiled HP and a nice regen.
The Hardeners are the only thing that uses cap but even with the lower regen due to the sheild power relays it should be enought to run them for a while before running out.
I was going to put 2 rail guns in the remaining highs for drones and other small fast targets but found that time made up looting cans quicker discounted the extra time taken to kill small targets.
If you know that your rats will have fast frigs and do a limited amount of damage then maybe drop both hardners for an inv field and stick a web on it. ------------------------------------------------------

However the time it takes to move the ferox into tractor range is the main factor - especially if you're popping the rats at any sort of range. Best strategy to use with any slow mover on mission is to fit out a pure tractor cargo tug, BM a can and come back for the loot after the mission is finished. Once the mission is over MWD limitations are removed so as well as looting in a faster ship with a larger (and dedicated) cargo hold you can also MWD between groups of cans as necessary. Trust me - it's loads faster doing it that way. :)

Grr, memory failing due to lack of recent playing... But, it's the one with the slavers, you drop through a warp gate into an "arena" with several beam turrets, a bunch of destroyers, and 2 battlecruisers, all laser fitted. Downing the slavers?
I might be able to do it, I haven't tried. Comp's been flakey for quite a while now, and I've had that mission come up exactly once since I could fit targeting comps. And, it came up early, when I hadn't much confidence in flying a Ferox like it's a really big destroyer. Though, given what I have seen from the fit since then, you're probably right that it can fly 'em all.
*sigh* less than a week till I fly again....

Yup - Downing the Slavers Pt.2 - it's easily doable with my setup :) I've done it with just active EM and thermal hardeners (plus 1 large T2 extender) although I do usually take off the webber and go with an extra active hardener (i.e. EM, thermal and multispec for a little extra insurance - don't really need the webber on that mission).
Once you know what to expect it's not that bad - the trick to it is to prioritise targets to reduce incoming damage asap -the 4 sentry turrets must die first.
1) start your active modules up before you drop out of warp. 2) as soon as you drop out, target the 4 turrets first 3) F1-F7 so your initial salvo fires as soon as target lock is acquired 4) Start moving towards a warpable object just in case something goes badly wrong (e.g. lag spike) 5) launch drones - set them on the 'next' turret (first one should be almost done by now) 6) once turrets are down, set drones / missiles on frigates, guns on the BCs. Mop up, go home :)

Lots of good info....
Here is how I did it:
Low skills and very poor... I got my first ferox. This was my lvl3 mission setup: Basically, I canabilized my lvl2-running Caracal and tried to minimize the risk as I tried my first couple of lvl3's with a passive tank. (It was very hard to leave that med booster in the hanger... It saved me so many times!)
Highslots 2x Heavy Launcher I's 3x Assault Launcher I's 2x 200mm rails (didn't have the skills for the tractor yet) Medslots 2x active hardeners (Kin/therm for a guristas mission) 3x large shield extenders Lowslots 1x Ballistic Control System 3x Shield Power Relays
This is a very cheap fitting. Nothing was named or T2. (And if you can't fit this... don't fly a passive ferox yet!)
After you can fit this--GET A TRACTOR! and then work toward Drones, T2 extenders, get your missile rate of fire/damage up, and shield regen skills. Then work toward T2 hardeners, and finally towards the BCS-II. Eventually, you want all your defense at T2 and then work toward BC level 4.
As your support skills get better (shield recharge/better mods/BC level/etc...) you can remove one of the SPR's and replace it with a BCS (eventually, standardizing on 2x BCS-II and 2x SPR in the lows)
The highslots are really "whatever you want up there." once you have the tank setup properly. You can mix/match assaults and heavies/ named/standard mods easily.
Initially, you'll want to stay aligned and start your warpout at around 30% shields for missions. Once you go T2 for the defensive stuff, you really should never have to warpout as long as you fit the proper hardners and don't forget to turn them on. With FoF missiles and drones, you can actually AFK most lvl3's, just return to the computer to reset the launchers. (and no, NPC's never run out of ammo)
(and yeah, even though I use active hardeners--I still call it a passive shield tank)
I've read a lot about invuls... use 3, use 2, etc.... two invuls can drain the cap on a 3x-4x SPR using ferox with low skills.... use at your own risk. Once your BC level is high enough, you can try the 5xLSE tank, but the active hardeners seemed to work better for me.
Currently, my ferox is all T2 on the defensive side and T1 on the offense. 5x arbie heavies, 1xtractor, and a 250mm prototype in the highs and the T2 versions of everything else (2x BCS-II's and standard SPR's in the lows)

Have never been below 30% shields with this setup and hell.. I've even fallen asleep doing Angel Extravaganzaz. It almost makes mission running too boring. Fondly known as the "Ladel-Tank" in my corporation and used by several members to extreme success.
As for PVP.. it works well. Battleships have been tanked for long enough to get taken out in this.
insane build Thanks

Pretty much a pure I-win ship for level 3 missions. The only bit I have a bit of problem with is the bonus stages on Gurista Extravaganza. I could AFK pretty much everything else if I didn't need to manually target and shoot.

Low 3 x Ballistic Control Unit/System II 1 x Shield Power Relay I
I can do all level 3 missions easily with this setup. Requires high skills though (I have ~14 mil).
Tech II missiles can be used as the only modules using the cap are the hardeners. I hit for over 300 damage per missile on hull. _____________________________________________________

I use a vanilla version of the OP's setup and it tanks level 3 missions really well. With the hardeners on the cap settles at about 40-50%, and the only time that I have been below 70% was on my first mission when I was dropped on top of four sentry guns in my first lvl 3 and didnĘt realize that I was meant to take them out first.
High Slots 5 x Heavy Missile Launcher I 2 x 150mm Compressed Coil Gun
Mid Slots 2 x Rat Specific Hardener I 3 x Large Shield Extender I
Low Slots 3 x Shield Power Relay I 1 x Ballistic Control Unit.
5 x Rat specific Light Scout Drone I
Actually, I have upgraded the missile launchers to Malkuth. I might upgrade them to Limos, but I donĘt see the point in spending millions on missile launchers for an extra 10% rate of fire when I just tank anything anyway. Also, I will upgrade the hardeners and extenders in a few days when I have shield upgrades trained.
Anyhoo the point is that for players who are just getting into lvl 3 missions, the vanilla version of the ferox works perfectly fine.

with Everything turned on cap stop dropping at around 40-50% depend on ur skill/modules . Can do all lvl 3 missions without getting under 100% shields for more then a sec or 2, even if u aggroed the entire room (on purpose ofcourse ^^). with good gear and skills u can do lvl 4 missions with it. a drake with the same setup will work just as good and will have an extra med slot for whatever.

That's just freaky...
Mine is about if not exactly the same, I use my ferox for ratting/missions. ~This is the freaky bit:
High: x5 Advanced 'limos' heavies with 2 Scourge, 1 Widow maker, 1 Thunderbolt and 1 Havoc x1 small tractor beam x1 150mm 'scout' with....antimatter!
Mid: x1 Magnetic Scattering Amplifier II x1 Heat Dissipation Amplifier II x3 Large Shield Extender II
Low: x2 Power Diagnostic System I x1 Ballistic Control System I x1 Shield Power Relay I
I have the tractor beam because the ferox is slow and well the beam makes looting faster. The gun is for finishing off frigates that get in under 7,000m though my heavies can still hit them that close, I'm usually firing them at npc's still a bit out. Also Drones - 5 Acolytes.
I have 15,178hp on the shield and a shield recharge rate of 641sec. Cap recharge rate is 654sec but this setup is very easy on cap use. I think the ferox was born to passive tank in my opinion.

The heavy launchers are for rat group summoning, the assault launchers are for killing everything within 30km (if it doesn't get that close then the heavy launchers will do it, slowly). As others have said the 150mm is for finishing off the near dead wounded (or to see an extra icon, it makes you feel better with more of them showing ).
Thinking of adding a purger rig to increase the shield recharge, that would remove the need for one of the power relays, or free up a mid slot for a painter (which in turn would lead to more heavy launchers as frigates become much easier to kill).
