Hello all,
Recently I bought a 3d printer and I have gotten pretty good with some CAD programs. I have been able to recover all the ship in game. heres my question:
1. Is there any known portion of the EULA that anybody knows about that would keep me from producing these models and selling them? Obviously I wouldn't claim them as my own design, all the credit would go to eve. and I also wouldn't credit them as being legit pieces from ccp. I have seen some on ebay but they are cheep cardboard piece together that look just worthless.
2. I know of a load of people that have wanted to get there hands on some model ships, If I were to print some out they would be made with abs plastic and only the highest quality ones would make it for shipment. in addition they would be hand painted to match the paint job of any ship in the game. would people be interested in purchasing some of these?
curious on the answer. if you have reference to the eula please post it as well. |

Would you also offer non-painted ones for a lower price point for those of us who like painting ourselves.
As for EULA stuff, I have no idea. Though I have seen some EVE fan made merchandise sell for quite a long while like EVE decals and racial cufflinks and pins. |

Yes I would offer non painted models at a significantly reduced price as the painting is what would take the most time other then the model editing to prep for printing. In addition to that I would make custom paint jobs available to people who can provide a proper layout and template for creation.
Also, I would be able to customize the size to a reasonable amount. I wont be able to make "miniatures" but once I print a couple of these off I will know the exact size to still be able to get the best detail. however bigger models like the three foot models will obviously be more expensive(like the 3 foot model of a titan ill be making for myself lol). and I'm working on non pieced together ships for model making like the old car models you used to be able to find.
The average model size will be around 210x190x140 which will vary depending on the dimensions of the specific ship. |

EULA does say that you cant use the eve IP for your own profit, but it is a very grey area. CCP are pretty loose with it.
File a support ticket and ask a GM, you'll probably want to get it escalated to a senior.
If you can get a decent looking model, I'd be interested in what you've got. |

Yeah, each corp or publisher is different, but in the general scheme of things they're usually pretty hands-off with fandom made things. It just becomes a noticeable problem to them if you claim to own it as an original design, claim to be officially affiliated or representing the designer/publishers, or start to make huge amounts of profit. But with other sci-fi, fantasy, anime, video game fandoms, I've barely seen any hobbyist making some spare money on the side get targeted. Just not worth the paperwork (and bad PR) trouble for them.

okay so my next question. how much would people be willing to pay for these? I was thinking about $50 for a standard not painted one that fits within the 210x190x140 and about $150-250 (depending on the paint detail) for painted ones. |

Cease and assist?
What are they going to assist with?
As to the original question, internet lawyering is worth as much as you pay for it, but I'll give it a go anyway. Don't even bother with the EULA, unless it explicity allows this type of thing (which it doesn't). The intellectual property belongs to CCP and I think if they wanted to take action, you'd have a fairly hard time arguing fair use. |

No, because that is what copyright law is for. Now legally no one can prevent you from making a copy for yourself at home. However if you started selling them/giving them away to other people, CCP lawyers could legally come down on you like a ton of bricks. I'm sure this could be applied to any file containing the copyrighted design if you're distributing it to others so they can print it on their 3D printers. Said file is a much more obvious violation than say, a .torrent file, yet .torrent site owners have still been nailed to the wall.
Of course the author himself can always give you permission to duplicate his work if he feels like it and you ask nicely. |

A lower cost version light enough to be shipped world wide economically might just fit the bill, particularly if an unpainted version was that inexpensive. A lot of people would like to paint them in their favorite color scheme.
Oh, if CCP would issue a color chart corresponding with their established corp color schemes, perhaps even with the equivalent color name from popular model paint lines...

The hard plastic CCP used at the old models that was selled at eve-store are good ones. I have a Raven Navy model witch are nice. A bit fragile ate the spike and antennas but still very good.
Looking at it, remember me that a stand / pedestal to put and display it is also a nice addition if possible. There are some picture around that show it, just google for it.

Pretty much this, the shipping was the main issue for most people.
