Edited by: Liscia Thierese on 30/08/2003 00:26:17 Edited by: Liscia Thierese on 30/08/2003 00:25:36 It doesn't surprise me that more females do not play EVE. Co-operative games (PvE) with a real community where you can build ingame structures that benefit either your guild or other players i.e. settlements etc, have a larger female community.
Perhaps these MMOG's tap into more feminine traits - especially the communication medium. EVE isn't terribly chatty (trade aside) compared to other MMOG's. I don't think it sexist to think that certain MMOG's will attract a different ratio of both the sexes e.g. I imagine that 'Second Life' would have a disproportinately large female player based by comparison to other MMOG's. The only issue is when one comes across a mindset that females are 'inferior' to men at certain activities, games being a prime example. Or even worse, that females shouldn't even be playing games (prevalent in the FPS community).
The sex of the person behind the avatar doesn't bother me in the slightest because I RP the character first and foremost. Also, if I really wanted to 'hit' on someone on the 'net (for my sins), there are far more conducive mediums that would yield far better results. Or alternatively, I could just be retro and head to a decent bar to indulge in a Diane Keaton 'Looking for Mr Goodbar' 70's thing. Except I'd be looking for Hilary Duff - in a few years when she's no longer jail-bait- and a 5 year jail term :P
But I digress ..

I always thought less women would play eve because you don't have an actual avatar that can have relationships, marriages, etc. Kinda hard to do those things in a spaceship...
In UO and EQ there were tons of marriages at the lil chapels... not gonna happen here...

Edited by: DigitalCommunist on 30/08/2003 03:35:09 Our corp has 10 definite females in it, 3 more that I haven't confirmed in one to one chat, so roughly 10% of the entire corp.
Although you can usually find 2-3 online all the time in corp chat.
4-5 of them are also fighters, heh, it gets interesting at times..

Quote: Maybe I am alone here, but I purchased Eve because I understood it to be more about interstellar commerce and researching of technology. My idea to dominate Eve revolved around creating unique BPs and working for a R&D corp. I guess for now I will play Space-Miner with the occasional shot fired.
You are not alone - it pretty much parallels my reasons. Unfortunately, much of what you mention is still not in place, and it does not look like any of it will be in the near future. CCP seems to be concentrating only on the PvP aspect of the game lately (in fact, all the "testing" on Chaos is PvP related). Things like reverse engineering seem to have dropped totally off the radar. I can be just as ruthless as M0o economically, but the tools simply are not in the game. Some of the guys in the corp are trying to get me into shooting stuff more, but I am woefully ignorant of things like weapon characteristics, ECM, or even when to run for my life.
I played AC for quite a while, and it also had quite a few ingame "marriages", which I actually thought were kind of silly On the other hand, I always thought it was cute when the guys would bring me lots of flowers.
I think, as someone else noted above, that part of it is the rather limited chat interface - in EQ I logged on as much for the yapping sessions as I did for the game play, and that seems to be mostly missing in this game. I realize that not all women are the same, any more than all men are the same, but we DO tend to like hen clubs more than "mine is bigger" macho sessions
I am not sure why many girls don't like PvP much - I guess we tend to be more cautious and worry about losing all our "stuff" more? I know that I am pretty "risk averse", even on corp outings, I tend to stay in the background and just fire off all my missiles. Not sure what I am hitting, but even girls like to see stuff blow up...

What are women after? Is it more a civ or sim like strategy game? Building, creating, maintaining (nurturing?) things? Also the chat interface? The human interaction? Need for more flexibilities, abilty to emote?
Men also like to play these kinds of strategic games, and also go gaga in IRC and emote like crazy when females are present.
For PvP, there are *lotsa* of guys who hate losing their stuff too though

Edited by: Captain Xpendable on 30/08/2003 19:59:53 Some wonderings, maybe some girls can clue me in if they're valid or not.
I wonder if girls have a harder time feeling social when their avatar is a ship. This game it very "hardware" oriented, It's all about ships stats and what tech you can add to it. Most skills and attributes are about how they improve the hardware. It's seems to me that many girls are less interested in that stuff.
I also wonder if more girls are drawn to fantasy titles than science fiction. It seems to me that fantasy is usually more romantic than science fiction (though there are exceptions). EVE certainly isn't very romantic (at least in my opinion). Would this make girls less interested?
BTW I did have female characters in EQ, and they defenitly got more stuff from people than my male characters.

I think eve isn't a really social game. What i miss are pubs or something in space stations, where you can hang around, drink n' chat with ppl. This would also allow new "professions" such as Barkeeper. And think of it, someone had to brew the beer for the pub .... and there were times when i was famous for this :)
CCP I want a Brewing Skill and a brewery service at stations! :D -- The worst thing you can do when suggesting a solution to a problem is to provide alternatives, people end up arguing the alternatives instead of implementing the fix. |

Well, actually, yes I do, that is a good point that I had not really considered...
Perhaps if I could paint pink and blue stripes on my ship it might feel more personalized
In EQ, DAOC, and other games I think I did feel more "attachment" to the character avatar. A lot of the girls I knew, including me, had special "town clothes" that were often quite useless as armor but pretty nifty as costumes - some went for the "street hooker" look, others for the "Angel of the Morning" look - but the real point was that it was distinctly "you". In AC I had a collection of over 30 different dresses and variations. However, it must be said that the guys often had their own set of "social" clothes/armor also.

For those that feel a little 'detached' from their character without arms and legs, what about MUDs? Has anyone played MUDs? They were very social activites, and it was all text based. ____________________________________ Taggart wants YOU. Join TTi! *waves his hand in your face in the jedi way* |

I don't know...
I like sci-fi a little bit more then fantasy. But I always was alone with that.
But I swear there are days I want to quit after I read through these boards...
Oh, and although you don't have "arms and legs" on screen in MUDs, it's more like a big PnP-RPG, and you cannot compare them to CRPGs, in my eyes. And in our PnP-groups I was almost never the only girl.
What I miss in Eve is communication/interaction... I mean the chat interface isn't that bad, yet many people don't respond in local at all, or don't reply to EVEmails etc which I think is rather ironic, seeing that some players are complaining about Eve being too "single player". And I can remember that in beta this was different.
And at the moment, Eve isn't truly an RPG, anyway, but I did say that about all pay-to-play online games I played.
Well... once again, I strayed from the path of staying on-topic. -------------------------------------- Sarela "Eurydike" Taris

Edited by: Luther Pendragon on 30/08/2003 16:59:04 I find it odd people dont reply to evemails from a girl either
But forgive me, but what is PnP, the 'C' in CRPG?
And about the chat interface, what feature or features would be the most important to add?
Is a partial reason why people dont respond in local chat is because their chat is closed as their preoccupied with other channels?
In beta they had a very local chat with the words floating above your ship. I came to like that, and was disappointed it was removed. ____________________________________ Taggart wants YOU. Join TTi! *waves his hand in your face in the jedi way* |

Oh, and I thought that the local chat with words flaoting above the ship was so silly! I mean please, this is nice with avatars, like text bubbles in comics (a la Phantasy Star Online), but with ships? ;) -------------------------------------- Sarela "Eurydike" Taris
