I have just created another account and cos I already have another character on a different account with over 2m sp, I decided to skip the tutorial and get on with playing the game.
Although it's supposed to be a real-time tutorial. I see so many rookies sitting just outside the station waiting to be told what to do next. This causes major lag when you exit, not to mention bumping into every ship at the exit point when you try to warp off somewhere.
Since the initial tutorial is just supposed to aquaint you with the controls, can't this be done in a virtual environment so that rookies know what to do when they exit the station for real? Such things as ship controls and movement, targetting and shooting at targets, mining are things that could be done offline if necessary. If that was incorporated into the design of the game, users would be already aquainted with the ship functions when they log in to the Tranquility server. If this was done as an offline demo, users would get the feel of the game and some insight into the GUI functions to start with but not causing problems at noob starting stations.
If doing this part of the tutorial as an offline game is not possible, users who have not completed the first tutorial or have not yet disabled it are asked: Do you want to begin the control tutorial? A yes response automatically passes them to the test server and they are told that anything they do there will not have any effect on the game when they have finished the tutorial. This helps the noobs as well since anything they do wrong there, (ie: take pot shots at a concord ship or something similarly stupid - and yes, I've seen it done!), or any mistakes they make while using the interface will not affect their standings when they log in to Tranquility to play properly with the first of the missions. It would also benefit everyone else who is trying to get on with the game instead of sitting and waiting for the laggy exit from the station.
At the end of the tutorial, they get the message: Quote: Congratulations, you have now earned your pilots license and will now be transferred to the Tranquility server. From now on, what you do will have an immediate and lasting effect on your character. Good luck.
The initial quote when you start is: "Well done on earning your pilots license" but this is rubbish since noobs haven't got a clue how to pilot the ship at all. This is what I am trying to address here, You have NOT earned it since you don't have a single clue about how to use the controls and a pilot who has earned their license would at least know how to move the ship from one place to another, even if the rest of the interface was a complete mystery.
As the user base increases with the implementation of the new servers, we can expect to see more and more noobs joining the game. Don't let lag become a major issue in the noob stations still.
