Whilst profitable, solo mining in hi-sec is deathly dull.
So, I am wondering if there is any milage in getting into a Rokh and then solo mining in Lo or Null Sec.
I don't care if it's not as profiable as long as it's more interesting and have more asteroid belts to myself. |

you're better off mining in a hulk. they can tank rats in 0.0 and probably warp out faster then a rokh. |

Rokh would give more flexibility than a hulk as far as tank / defensive modules. Cheaper to buy and much cheaper to loose as well. It will definitely be more interesting than highsec, though whether you make any isk off it depends how you do it.
Have you considered scanning for hidden belts? While they're not spectacular in highsec, they provide a welcomed change of scenery. Or some missions have decent belts for mining. |

The problem with the Rokh... even though you can fit (8) Mining Laser II, you will have to stagger them to keep from all of them delivering ore at the exact same time to your cargo and overflowing it. Which means, on average, that you'll have to drag ore every 30 seconds (without any boosts).
Barges/Exhumers only have to drag ore every 180 seconds in comparison.
(I think... it's been 2 years since I tried and I can't remember if I rigged the Rokh with cargo expander rigs.) |

No, low sec mining in a Rokh is probably not a good idea. It doesn't really buy you anything in low sec. In low sec there is no concorde, so they can just sit there and keep pounding on you until you die, so a Rokh with mining lasers is no harder to kill than an exhumer or barge it just takes a little bit longer. Solo they'll warp scramble you and call in a friend or two maybe, and that'll be it.
A hulk, however, is probably an equally bad option. It's too expensive to risk in low sec.
What I would recommend using for low sec mining is a covetor. Something you could bear to lose, because you will lose it.
Solo mining in low sec is very tough, but doable. You need to be really, really, on your game. You should pick a place to do it that is deep into low sec. Study the map and find a swath of low sec where most systems are empty most of the time. The Aridia region might be a good choice. Try to only mine when nobody is in local.
When somebody is in local, you should identify two warp points on opposite sides of the area. Align to one, then before you go out of range of the roid, align to the other to double back. Constantly watch your dscan for combat probes, and any time you see a probe, dock. Any time you see a ship come into your belt, warp to whichever warp point you're aligned to. Warp immediately, don't wait for your drones to return to your bay. Or, if that is all too much of a hassle, just wait them out in the station.
Bring a combat ship with you for clearing rats. Doesn't need to be much.
One of your main challenges will be transporting your stuff out to the system you want to mine in and transporting your minerals back to someplace you can sell them. If you're deep enough into low sec to be somewhat alone, you are going to have a long dangerous trip there and back. One option is to find shortcuts through wormhole space. If you don't do that, take your time. Have an alt scout ahead for gate camps. If you haven't, I would consider training for transport ships and astrometrics to ease your transportation woes.
You might want to bring out enough supplies to stay out there for a while. Two or three covetors, an indy, a scounting alt, crystals, drones, etc. Kind of set up a little base in a station way out there so you don't need to be moving back and forth all the time. It's the moving there and back that is the riskiest probably, so do your move at a time when there are not that many players online, or do it through a wormhole shortcut.
You might also consider installing a jump clone in one of the stations from your starter corp before you go. That way once you get the stuff you need out to the low sec system where you're mining, you can jump back to hi sec when you don't feel like dealing with low sec and vice versa. That is nice if your system is crowded one day and you want to play. You can just jump back to hi sec for a while instead of doing something risky.
I solo low sec mined for a while. It was actually really fun. But, to be honest, I lost money doing it. I was fairly new then. I imagine I could make money doing it now. But there are a lot of dangers in low sec. If you haven't spent much time there yet, you have a long learning curve full of lost ships ahead of you. But in my opinion, it is way worth it. Ultimately non-hi-sec is more profitable, and more importantly, 100 times more fun. Just fly ships you won't be upset to lose and every time you die sit down and think through what you could have done to avoid dying, and it'll all be good. |

Another thought. I don't know where you're at in terms of ISK or experience in low sec, but if you aren't loaded enough to shrug off losing a covetor or a cargohold of minerals and you haven't spent much time in low sec you might want to just start out small. Try mining for a while in a T1 cruiser with a mining bonus in a more nearby, more crowded, low sec system. Plan on doing it until you've died a few times and know what did wrong before you risk the more expensive ship and longer trip out to more isolated low sec. Making a profitable career out of mining in low sec is one of the tougher things to do in the game, so expect that it will take you a while to master. |

You'll just die slower, but die you will. Probe out hisec gravs or join a null-sec corp if you want to mine there. |

The cargo fills quickly so you have to stagger the lasers with no more than 2 at the same time. You end up dragging a lot of ore to a jetcan.

Thanks for these messages. They have given me food for thought.
I was thinking about having some missile launchers on the Rokh to fight back though it would cost me some ISK in terms of revenue.
I will go away and pnder my options. I may try the Corvete option again as that was good even though I kept blowing up every five minutes but I am sure that, in the meantime, I can save up for a Rokh.
One thing I would love to do in Hi-Sec in belts full of bots is to get in there in Rokh and drain the place for myself.
Thnaks again, I am going to print all this out, save that fit, and then ponder on it all. |

Unfortunately in low sec, fighting back as a solo player is very rarely an option even in a fully pvp fit ship. They will most often bring multiple ships. As a solo player, not getting caught in the first place is really your one and only line of defense. |

I will go for that.
i just got podded in Lo Sec. Not the best time to have some sort of glitch and now I can't even get my capsule to move.
I think that I will just concentrate on hi-sec with mining and go in a proper pvp ship to cause mayhem in Lo Sec.
edit: I will still consider a Rokr though, just to get rid of the bot miners which I see every day; they need a bit of competition. |

IKf you seriously have a thing about wanting to be a miner
Dont mine in lowsec or null - or you will die unless you are in a 00 alliance
If you want to mine don;t focus your skills towards a mining Rokh, it may have more laser points but its not designed for mining and your yield will be low (as their are no mining bonuses and you skills will be low where they can increase yield). Instead focus your skills towards an exhumer - ie ultimately aim for a hulk
If you still want to mine then search out highsec sites, and if these aren't enough look for unoccupied wormholes, potentially you may look to joing an industrial 00 alliance (though normally they will expect you can fly exhumer at the least) or a wormhole corp

well, one thing you could do as well to avoid being ganked in null or 0.0 when mining in a BS is to mine in a Black ops, you will get the same ore/hr and if **** happens then you can jump to an alt with a cyno near a station or in a safe system. you can jump to with quick notice.
it's not something i recommend though. it is an expensive ship and it is very skill intensive. |

Of course you don't have to fit 3 MLUs and 8 Mining lasers, and therefore the 2 CPUs
Additionally if you're mining why fit the LIF rocket boosters?
You could fit 6 lasers and 2 mlu's, and then fit a better tank and 2 large smartbombs...
And carry ewar drones .. |

Well, hi-sec and lo-sec ores are currently worth roughly the following (ISK/m3 mined, assuming zero-tax and perfect refine):
Veld 99 Scor 91 Pyro 128 Plag 103 Omb 68 Kern 104 Jasp 157 Hemo 179 Hedb 174
So depending on what you mine, you take the m3/hr that you can mine with whatever ship you are using and multiply by the ISK/m3 value of the ore that you collected and you'll get a rough approximation. Note that there are variants of the ores that hold 5% and 10% more minerals per m3, which makes them worth 5% and 10% more then the regular ores. |

Definitely worth it. I have an alt trained to scan. Her frigate has scan bonuses, plus two scanning rigs which improve probe strength. Sisters core scanner probes. Skills: Astrometrics Aqcuisition level 3 Astrometric Pinpointing level 4 (reduces scan deviation by 10% per level) Astrometric Rangefinding level 3 (increases scan probe strength by 10% per level) Astrometrics level 4 allows 1 additional probe in space per level.
With the ship setup, the skills, and the sisters probes, I can can down "Large Jaspet, Hemorphite, and Kernite" deposits in 0.7 systems (barely). I doubt I would be able to pinpoint a "Large Hedbergite, Hemorphite, and Jaspet" deposit due to lack of skill, however I have found small/medium ones.
I believe Jaspet shows up in 0.8 systems in the form of small or medium Jaspet/Kernite/Omber deposits, but I can't say that with 100% accuracy.

You should really only use the Rokh if your battleship skills are better than your Exhumer skill, or you are *shorter* on isk. If you are concerned with maximizing your profits, a Hulk will definitely outmine a Rokh in the long term and can tank anything you need to tank in null.
Just keep your eyes on local (obviously). If you're interested in mining, go for the Hulk.
