Just a quick question, does the bonus from mining foreman still apply when one is not in a gang? Does it apply to the foreman in any situation for that matter?

You have to be in a gang, and with at least one gangmember in space in the same system as you, for the bonuses of the Leadership skills to apply.
Found that the hard way, I have Mining Foreman 4, and when my second account hauler alt docks I loose the +8% mining yield bonus (as well as the shield HP, targeting range etc from my other Leadership skills).

It's pretty worth it to train it to foreman 4 imho... takes a day or two, and 8% is a lot :) If youve got a second account, its totally worth it. Just leave the hauler on standby!

Could somebody explain in layman's terms how it works? If I have an alt with the Mining Foreman skill and my main character has good mining skills does that mean that my alt gets the bonus when in a gang to their mining yield?

Every member of the gang, if they are in the same system, gets the bonus from the highest level of skill in the gang.
And yes, +8% mining yield is a lot ...

Ok, sorry to dwell on this but I'm still unclear:
My alt gets 8% bonus of what? 8% of that characters mining yield or 8% of the mining yield of the best skilled gang member added to the alt's yield?!

The bouns you get applies to all people in the gang at the time. This means that for eveyone using a mining laser, short of the ice harvesters, each person will get the +% based on the current lvl of the mining formen skill.
As stated above, of all the people in the gang the one with the highest lvl of the skill, is the value applied to all other members.

It is a gang skill and like all the rest, the player with the highest skill is used by the entire gang. So if you are at level 4 (8%) and some one else is at level 3 (6%), then your skill would be used and everyone would get an 8% increase to which ever of the gang skills it applied to. For mining forman, that come down to being everyone in the gang would mine an extra 8% per cycle.
If it was armor, shields, or speed, they would all get an 8% increase in that. Once you get to level 5, then you can get the skill to use the command modules (mining director for mining) which adds even more on top of the base skill.
