Guys, and Gals,
I've just been down to my local bookstore in search of something that would jump out at me and say 'Read ME, Read ME'. But alas I left empty handed.
So I come to you the EVE playerbase, what books of the SF genre have you read frecently, would recommend and why?
Thankyou all in advance.. please save me from re-reading 'The Algabriast' for the 8th time.

although i didnt read those books yet i cant really say something about the plot but they seem to bee very good. i'm talking about the Berserker books of Fred Saberhagen.
quote from wikipedia: The Berserker stories tell about an ongoing war between humanity and the Berserkers. Saberhagen's Berserkers are Von Neumann probes programmed with one main objective: Destroy all life. The series spans a large range of both time and space, and so has less plot continuity than Saberhagen's other series.
i ordered me the first one, so i gonna read them pretty soon :)

1) Stephen Baxter. Xeelee Series--start with Vacuum Diagrams. And while you're at it read The Time Ships and Sunstorm. These are AMAZING books.
2) David Brin. Uplift Trilogy, Uplift Storm Trilogy. Without a doubt the best, if not the second best scifi trilogies ever written.
3) Larry Niven. Ringworld. Known Space series. And the Mote in God's Eye, the best first-contact novel EVER WRITTEN.
4) Asimov. The foundation series. Classic but astounding. -- Proud member of the [23].

Fallen Dragon and the Nightsdawn trilogy by Peter F Hamilton are gritty well done books
I second the Ringworld by Larry Niven - excellent stuff.
The ship who sang by Anne mcCaffrey is one that always sticks out for me (as does her pern series).
Salt by Adam Roberts
The forever war by Joe Haldeman.
And as DS said - Asimovs classic Foundation series.
The Culture series by Iain M Banks.

Edited by: Lluthiunne Atalaron on 06/02/2006 13:57:21 Gap Series by Stephen Donaldson very dark, space opera stuff.
Dune by Frank Herbert A no brainer really, you should already have this.
Diaspora by Greg Egan Brain warping stuff, a great ending.
Valis - Ubik by Philip K. D*i*c*k. Brilliant SF, classics even.
Damn profanity filter.

Yeah, Many of them are trash, but there are a few pearls. I've got 40+ SW books, and I think 30 or so are trash
OP, if you don't like SW fiction, then try the other books by timothy zahn. He's truly an excellent writer

Edited by: Mary Makepeace on 07/02/2006 03:31:43 Edited by: Mary Makepeace on 07/02/2006 03:30:48 Well as you have read the Algebreist, i am going to assume you have read the culture series. if you havn't read them, then that is what you should go a get right now.
otherwise, Richard Morgan is the dude you want to read. "Altered Carbon", sex and violence with thought provoking characterisation in a future noir world.
i will also throw my support behind: Phillip K. D*i*c*k Jeff Noon Greg Egan Micheal Marshal Smith David Brin Neil Stevenson Wiliam Gibson Peter F. Hamilton (put last as he has flashes of briliance embedded in vat of mediocrity, urgh, that's bit too harsh tbh)
and for bubblegum scifi (amusing and to be chewed up and spat out) David Weber's Honor Harrington books
otherwise find the Nebula and Hugo award winner lists, all the winners are there for a reason.

Agreed! I highly recommend Stephen Baxter! Alternatively, if you want some classic "space opera", you should also check out the "Lensman Series" by Doc E.E. Smith.

Richard Morgan - Altered Carbon, Woken Furies, Broken Angels
Why: Excellent sci-fi that you wouldn't normally expect and Kovacs, the main character is simply badass.

If you haven't read everything by William Gibson go ahead and do that, starting with Neuromancer.

Thankyou all for your replies.. needless to say the credit card has had a bit of a battering and I'm awaiting a multitude of books to come winging their way through my door any day soon..
You've saved me from being forced to watch that evil thing in the corner of my room.. some people call it a 'Television'.. or even from being able to recite the books in my collection from memory
Of course if anyone has more recommendations please keep posting them here, it'll not only help me later on but wil probably help a great amount of EVE players in a similar situation.

OMG nobody suggested ender's game!!!!
Ok then, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
Also Chasm City by Alastair Reynolds and Revelation Space, Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap (since I didn't see anyone else recommend them). They aren't perfect but I liked them.
Other books I can think of have already been mentioned _______________ |

Enders Game by orson Scott Card is no doubt one of the best sci-fi books I've read. If you are in the mood for some space-opera, I'd suggest The Saga Of Seven Suns, by Kevin J Anderson.
Oh, and if you happen to be Swedish, anything by Denis Lindbom that you can find. Though, "Bevingaren" and "Frostens Barn" are probably the best, imo. Masuat'aa Matari website

Peter F Hamilton for teh win,
Any culture novel by Ian M Banks,
I also recommend Kevin Anderson.
Also what everyone else has said I support. some great books in this thread so far :)
I know this is slightly off topic but fantasy fans should read the sword of truth series by Terry goodkind, also the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan and my current favourite is the song of ice and fire by George R R Martin.
