Hello,
I'm gona be buying a new laptop in the next few weeks and am looking for some advice. I want to use it for gaming only realy, Eve (ofcourse) and FPS.
I'm considering the Dell XPS, anyone care to comment or point me in the right direction? Cost wise, no more than ú2,000.
I know I could get a better if I bought a normal PC, but this doesnt fit my lifestyle atm.
Thanks!
I've got an idea--an idea so smart that my head would explode if I even began to know what I'm talking about

1) Get a Pentium-M. 2) A good graphics card (6800 Go, etc) 3) A good battery. 12-cell recommended if you're going to use it on the go. 4) 1GB RAM. 5) DVD-RW.
If the above costs more than 1800 USD or 1200 pounds, you've done something wrong. -- Proud member of the [23].

Alienwares are real nice... but I have heard a couple of warnings about a.) their long-term durability -and- b.) their lack of service after the machine is no longer covered by warranty.
Might be worth researching before you buy.

Alienware/Falcon = Same as any other company, except an extra thousand dollars. -- Proud member of the [23].

Has anyone seen any laptops sporting the new Centrino Duo? They're not available in Oz yet. It sounds like a good chip and perhaps worth waiting for.

Edited by: Angaro on 07/02/2006 09:36:02 I personally don't see what's the point. The Centrino platform is all about low power consumption. It's about finally being able to (again) use your notebooks battery for anything other than walking from one power outlet to the next. So unless they invented some kick-ass way to make two cores use no more power than one...
Anyway, real mobile gaming is pretty much impossible (besides a quick round or two of UT). Any decent GPU will drain your battery in no time while gaming. So I don't really see a point in going for a pricier and slower Pentium M on a pure gaming laptop.

Yeh, I was looking at that one as an alternative to the more expensive XPS.
Which is the best Graphics card atm for notebooks? I know this one can be argued all day (proly) but just a general view would be helpfull.
Mobility is not realy an issue as it will always be plugged in. I'm going for a notbook again as it means I can sit on my sofa in the same room as my wife, this means I get less grief because "Your allways on that bloody game, I'm sure your addicted" etc etc...
Thanks!!

I've a dell xps, was exceptionally pleased with it as a desktop replacement, not the most portable thing in the world, but they do supply a very well padded laptop rucksack in which to store it and additional batteries etc, also fits several sets of clothing and a spare pair of shoes etc.
All you need for fanfest goodness :)
The XPS is good, and each month they tend to runa different offer, be it free double memory or a couple of 100 off, so watch for those offers. ---- Runner BH Lead |
