Yes there is. Press ESC and click on the Audio-tab to check your settings (volume etc.). If everything seems to be ok and you still don't hear sound-effects you might have the same problem I have: whenever I log in after a startup/reboot of my computer the sound effects don't work properly, i.e. there's no background noise in stations and I can only hear shots, thrusters, missile explosions when I have zoomed in very closely. Relogging usually solves this for me. (My guess is, that my on-board sound-hardware is just crap)
Hope that helps :)

I don't think that your onboard sound is the culprit. I have a decent 5.1 card and the same thing happens to me. Eve sound just appears to be less than optimal.

There are some sound effects but several (probably most) chipsets have issues with Eve the most common being sounds just dropping out. In addition sound production seems to tie up quite a lot of the CPU. Disabling it can often give a 10% boost to frame rates. -- (Battle hardened miner)

Edited by: Diatom on 09/02/2006 05:39:30 I don't use a sound card. I get great sound that's built into the MB. I am usually playing my tunes using Windows Media player and get all the sound effects from Eve at the same time. Once in a while the sound disappears but I can get it back by pressing "Cntlr Alt Shift F12" which turns the EVE sound off. I press it a second time to turn the sound back on. This usually works on the first go around but sometimes I have to repeat it.
The only time it gets a little more difficult is if I'm playing my second account at the same time with it's audio on. Then I run the process on both accounts and wait for Media Player to resume and then I can run the process again on both accounts and I get the sound effects back on both accounts.

ok so i have the 14 day trial, could that be it? also does noob gear not make sound?
basically i know how things work in games, i was expecting things like the engines to make a sound, the weapons to make a sound, etc. all i hear is the music, the interface(UI), and the warp sound. that is pretty much it. when i looked under the audion tab, i saw no vol control for sound fx. someone else told me there was sound and that i was zoomed too far out from my ship, but i was pretty close and didnt hear anything.
ok as far as my opinion, what a great game, but if the beauty has no sound to come with it, its kind of a waste.

The sound effects are there. I actually ran into the same problem with a CMI9880L onboard audio chip I've got on my mainboard. If you don't have a 5.1 system or other surround-sound setup, it's a good bet that the sounds are happening in channels you don't have speakers for. Like if you zoom in close and then pan your camera around, if the sound fades out you probably have incorrectly specified your speaker layout in Windows. While there is no real hardware audio acceleration supported by EVE, the game does support surround-sound audio. I'd check your speaker configuration settings.
