I think some of the ideas in this thread are great.
I don't agree with damage bonuses or penalties for the size of your gang.
But I agree that organisational skills, and UI and communication methods would be fantastic.
Ideally, within a corp, a person with a certain skill or role could setup and maintain wings. Each level of skill could add a couple of possible wings. Within each wing, you can assign corp members to them, and give each one a leader.
This way, the corp can be organised. Wings of combat ships, mining wings, a production wing, all the various aspects.
Then, like in BF2 as someone mentioned, you could have various communication options to individual wings, or wing commanders, who communicate with their wing.
Each wing could be named, and the use of gang modules would be possible from all those in a leadership role, but not backwards.
What I mean by that is, imagine that the corp has 6 wings:
Admiral Wing1 - Combat Wing2 - Combat (EW) Wing3 - Combat Wing4 - Combat Wing5 - Mining Wing6 - Production
If the admiral has a gang module then that affects everyone. So a module that grants a 5% shield bonus filters down to all those players.
If a wing commander has a gang module, it affects everyone in his/her wing. If a member of the wing has a module, it also only affects the members of that wing.
Now, the admiral(s) have a new skill, Tactical Management or something. This allows them to use a new module, which as luck would have it, is designed to be used on a command ship. You can even get into adjusting the ship numbers etc so that they can't be used on others, kinda like strip miners and barges. Anyway, the admiral has to be in the same system as a wing(s) and then the module gives him a tactical view of the battle. Maybe it shoots out probes etc, and the more skills you have the more information you're able to see. The admiral can then command/manage his/her forces. The wing commanders have a similar thing, but maybe it's a low slot module and it only gives them further info on their wing members...maybe their readouts (shield armour cap etc).
These measures would bring in whole new aspects to fleet battles, but don't take away the ability for fleets being run exactly as they are now if they want. JForce CEO and Founder of NWA NWA now recruiting
