So, there I was, having a little nose around in 0.2. After checking out the local NPC rats (a flavour I hadn't met before) I decided to practice my skills with the scanner. I've been reading the posts and trying to develop some competence with it.
I saw something on the scanner that looked - well, curious - and after about 10 minutes managed to pinpoint it. In fact several somethings. It looked like a junkyard in space. And it also had 4 sentry guns which, one tenth of a second later, reduced my ship to a molten blob. My aggression timer confirmed that I was now in a state of unfriendliness with a certain player corp.
Now, I am deliberately not giving names or places because one of the corp members was nearby and collected and returned most of the contents of my (ex) ship, and was generally rather friendly in the circumstances. Together with full insurance my lesson has cost me virtually nothing in ISK.
But, to get full value of the lesson, can someone fill in the missing details? I wasn't in 0.0, I was, if you will, victim of an "unprovoked assault". Does that corp collectively take a sec status hit for attacking me, or whoever set up the sentry guns? Could they do it in 0.3, or 0.4 space? Or even in 0.9?
I want to stay curious and learn by investigating, but I don't necessarily want to be vaporised by a privately owned sentry gun every 5 minutes.

Actually, that kill was considered an attack by YOU on their Player Owned Starbase (POS), which is what smoked you.
DS was correct in saying don't warp to moons you scan stuff at. You'll regret it horribly.

Does that apply anywhere, or only in 0.4 and less? Could someone set up a POS in 0.9 that fired at passing ships?

I certainly didn't take any "offensive" action, so what actually triggers the sentry gun response? Just being within range? The more I hear about it, the more I appreciate the polite lady pilot who collected my "bits" and delivered them to an agreed rendezvous - you know who you are

You can't have POS's in .9 so no, that couldn't happen
And yes, basically b/c you came into range was the act of aggression on your part. :)

To elaborate, Small POS Turrets optimal range is 180km-ish. Now, the farthest out you can warp in at is 100km.
POSes are naturally set to kill anything not blue/alliance/corp. I think the default mode even kills blues, but I'm not sure.
It was indeed extremely nice of that corp to give your stuff back. Kudos to them.

The highest sec at which you can place an aggressive POS is 0.3.

No, a POS will attack anything not specifically announced friendly, no questions asked... BOOM.
They are always in 0.3 sec space or lower and they can only be deployed around moons, not planets. So the simple rule in .3 or lower space is; Whatever you do, DON'T WARP TO A MOON.
If you rightclick your ship you get an 'enter POSshield pasword' like thingy, if you have that (and you probably never will) enter that BEFORE you jump in, that'll be your "access granted" pass.

Wrong.
It will only attack everything if they SPECIFICALLY set the settings so. Most POSs probably don't have them set in that fashion.
By "aggressive" I mean it shoots you first.

Nah, I've found the opposite. Most corporations consider themselves as "anti-pirate" and putting your POS to shoot everything is generally considered "pirate."

guess I must have always found the wrong ones then :P
Trying to escape from something "THIS SECOND, ANYWHERE BUT HERE" and accidentally warp to a moon AND being unfortunate enough to come out of warp close enough to a POS.... ZAP!!!!! :(
