Edited by: GC13 on 15/02/2006 03:08:33 Every player organization in Eve is currently called a corporation. Now, this sounds like the kind of thing that has to have been thought about before, but why not allow an organization to be called different things to indicate its intended play style?
Groups with a goal of financial prosperity can signal this by calling themselves a corporation. Groups that just want to have a chat room and perhaps occasionally help each other out can call themselves guilds. Tight-knit groups of friends with whatever goal can call themselves clans. Perhaps change the default name to "organization," and have that indicate that it's just a run-of-the-mill group (though I'd like to think that every organization would be rather close to one of the three specific philosphies).
Not really a serious suggestion. Just something I thought of and wondered if other people would find it to be neat too.
EDIT: Just to clarify, if I implented this, there would probably be a select box where the leader (would only call them CEO for a corporation, methinks) got to choose one of the four categories for your group, and your choice would be visibile in the Attributes page.

It makes sense. You'd expect a group of pirates to call them selves a gang. A group that plays as mercenaries as.. well.. mercenaries. and so on. A group that does nothing but mine and refine as a guild. A group that builds ships mainly as a Corp and so on. - - - - Q: Can I change skills without logging in or Que skills? A: no. to both. End of story.
Q: Wheres the Search button on the forums? A: There isn't one. go here. www.eve-search.com |

I guess you could also throw something like Social Club into that list of options.
but yes i think it would add a little spice, that way Merc groups could list themselves as Milita or a similar term.

Agreed. Guild doesn't originally mean "fantasy group of people grinding pink gnomes" but the word has been so intimately connected with fantasy games that it sickens me. No guilds in EVE, thank you. Yes, I'm really sick of fantasy games...played one and you've played all.
*edit* We could use other terms ofcourse, paramilitary group, citizen militia and others. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (\_/) (O.o) (> <) This is Bunny. Copy Bunny into your signature to help him on his way to world domination. |

Guild & associated words:
Association Firm Conglomerate League Confederacy Confederation Federation Coalition Partnership Enterprise Union Club Society Company Concern Corporation
So, it wouldnt hurt removing ubiquitous "corporation" word.

Corp is just a term used to describe a set of game mechanics.
If you want to belong to a guild instead of a corp, there's nothing stopping you from calling your corp "The Amalgamated Guild of Scordite Miners" or something similar.

It's not "really wanting to belong to a guild as much as" thinking "wow, these guys act like a guild, yet their organization is called a corporation." And then you'd have every freelancer corp having to put the word "guild" in their name. May work in real life, but cramps people's styles in a game.

Sounds like an interesting idea, but I'm more of a fan of consistency. Imagine a new player looking for a guild but being told guild suck and they should join a gang, or a corporation, or a fellowship, or etc?
How about leave it like it is, with players banding together to create a "Corporation" but allowing for a secondary classification to be selected from a predefined list, adn that classification is visible in the corp's info window. That way, someone researching corps to join can at least get that initial classification to further describe what they're looking for.
Also, a listing could be provided that lets users query up corps in those classifications. Looking for industry corps? Look up Unions. That kind of thing.
Hope that made some kind of sense, I'm going on zero coffee today. :(

Makes perfect sense to me!
I do thing having "organizational philosophy" and "primary focus" on the attributes page would help a lot (assuming they were truthful!) in getting recruits who wanted to be there. Sure, you can put it in the description, but for some reason a lot of people don't.
Oh well. Just fun to keep floating ideas.

Sounds ghey to me.
/me goes to People and Places, and changes search type to Association Firm Conglomerate League Confederacy Confederation Federation Coalition Partnership Enterprise Union Club Society Company Concern Corporation
Ohhhnoooes i can't find a association of persons of the same trade or pursuits, formed to protect mutual interests and maintain standards because I don't know whether they are a Firm, Conglomerate, League, Confederacy, Confederation, Federation, Coalition, Partnership, Enterprise, Union, Club, Society, Company, Concern or Corporation.

I'm ok with corporations.
However, the word "Alliance" is questionable. I would think other meta organizations might be a Trust or something else.
Perhaps if the associations in the game become more complex, we will see more parallel affiliations after contracts systems. It would be quite a feat if these could also be non-hierarchical systems, and didn't conform precisely to make the war system convenient.
I like the idea of internal dissent within networks, rival municipalities within nations, that sort of thing. I like the idea that any action might lead to indirect consequences that might be unfavorable and endless intrigue.
In some ways, the systems of identification are so simple at the moment, that conflict scenarios have to be made easy to avoid, because they are so simple to enact.
In some ways "clans" seem more appropriate given peoples' motivations for their behavior, but corporations seems to invite a notion of people looking to their own interests and cooperating only when it is profitable to do so. Corporation reflects a darker, more compelling storyline. I like the idea of a project that would succeed with an impersonal corporate environment, but it just hasn't been achieved yet using available tools given the legal power of the clanists to exercise their advantages.

I can't speak for Kraft or CCP, but IBM and Microsoft have plenty of "freelancers".
They're generally called consultants.

Tinfoil hat? :D
It could also set the stage for an invasion of space navigators that depend on perception-altering drugs to navigate at light-speed velocities, who would proceed to create a vastly powerful monopoly on space transport.
( "THE" Guild, if i have to spell it out)
Nor having "Syndicates" will bring about 4-man squads of bio-engineered minigun wielding troopers set on the destruction of the church of the new epoch.

Well, I'm glad that most people (with the exception if a few smart ***es who think that just because you take one step in a direction means you have to start running) think it's a reasonable idea.
Now all we have to do is start sacrificing goats and hope CCP does it.

Sound fair to me, although some of the names bring strong images.. Clans == 13yo drooling kids playing Counter-Strike. Guilds == 13yo drooling kids running the half-naked elven women around in lingerie in the forests. (Although some parts of that are appealing to all healthy male humans)
